Sutliff 2023 Cringle Flake in a Butz Choquin calabash.

Today started with Mithtil and coffee. I got an odd urge to try something cherry- rare for me, I don't tend to like cherry tobacco. Sutliff Black cherry was ok for the first few puffs then it reminded me why I just don't care for cherry. Cherry tobacco sounds so good but I so rarely find one I like. Cult Blood Red Moon is on my list and maybe I will like that one. Ending my day with some Moontrance.

I just got my Missouri Meerschaum Timeless tobacco.

The tin smell is definitely bourbon. The first bowl has a mild Irish coffee taste with a hint of vanilla and toasted cocoa (if that's a thing). Definitely burley based. You can taste that nuttiness. Not overly sweet. Like Granger tobacco that sat in a bourbon barrel for awhile with a bit of coffee.  Light and easy smoke.

I am eyeing that one and have been for a while. Should I move it up on my order list? Sounds pretty good but my wish list is long and full of good sounding tobaccos. 👍 👎 ?

Give me another day with it to see. At the moment I would say it's good but not special. But I've only had 1 bowl.  I'll post something after 3 or 4 bowls. 😁

Earlier, Hal O’ the Wynd in a BriarWorks Classic (great pipes for the money, but I’m repeating myself).

Now, I needed my head to swim, (don’t ask why). Loaded up a Savinelli 616 KS with Irish Flake. I’m halfway through and still standing. What’s the casing on this? I’m too lazy to look it up! Always enjoy it though, whatever it is. Hold on, I just had a wobble! 😄

I’ve never been able to discern what the casing on it is, it’s really light and elusive. I would guess it’s a standard anise based one.

I reckon that’s a good guess. It definitely has an aniseed “liquoricey” undertone to it. Love the stuff, even though I’m not totally enamoured with aniseed/liquorice on its own.

Btw, I’ve nearly finished the bowl with nought but a wobble. My nicotine tolerance must be through the roof atm. Not sure whether that’s a good thing. But, anyway, I have some No.4 on its way to Mamma & Pappa’s! 😬😊

Irish Flake shows up in the medium range to me. Unless I power smoke a really strong tobacco right after I wake up, I never feel the nicotine. I judge nic levels based on how satisfied I feel with the smoke. I believe I maintain a fairly consistent nicotine saturation level. 🙂

Something I forgot to mention when I made my last post. I have heard from a few people that Irish Flake changed in more recent production, slightly different tobacco blend and it’s apparently not as strong nic wise. I do not know when this happened and if correct is sad, but somewhat predictable from STG. If anyone knows anything about this please post, I’m quite curious.

I'm trying Timeless again in a cob. 2nd bowl today. It's growing on me. Seems to get better as I smoke it. It's so smooth and has nice flavors in the retrohale.

I'm smoking some Timeless for my first bowl of the day.

I'm now fairly familiar with this blend. My tin came at near perfect moisture. The tin note is the wonderful aroma of aged bourbon. The burley is definitely the lead taste. It's nutty and earthy. Bourbon and black coffee are without a doubt there in every mouthful. They are subtle though. More evident in the retrohale. It will burn hot if you freight train. Taking your time is necessary with this blend. The sweetness is very tempered. Overall a beautiful smoke. Thick and creamy smoke from the Cavendish. It's a 4 out of 5 for an aromatic to me. I've found many aromatic blends boring, this one is not.

This only my opinion. If you don't like burley tobacco you might hate this one. But I ordered 2 tins. 🥸🥸🥸🥸

Oh best in a cob.

Thank you for sharing. My natural tendency is to freight train. Maybe I will get some timeless to help me curb that habit!

Second bowl of MacBaren Solent Mixture. Starting to think my dislike for Latakia was wrong. It's really because Plum Pudding tasted like a pine tree.

Plum Pudding is a really complex blend, at least to me. There is so much going in it that I dont think it gives a great example of how any if its components should taste on their own. Rather, the blend tastes like "Plum Pudding" which seems to be a love it /  hate it creation. Personally, I love it. You make me want to smoke some to see if the pine tree shows up.

I'd love to know if you do! It may also be that I was only really smoking Aromatics at the time and I just didn't expect it.

I’m glad to hear the Solent Mixture is going well for you! I finished off my last open tin about eight weeks ago, right now I’m thinking it’s time to open another.

This and Pilgrim's Muse have both been great. Letting the Eastfarthing age little more before I open it.

I know I’m supposed to wait a couple weeks after jarring tobacco, but I’ve already waited long enough! 😄

Anyway, this Carolina Red Flake with Perique already tastes sublime. It’s hard to imagine it will taste even better in a few weeks. It’s one of the sweetest tobaccos I’ve smoked. But the peppery, slightly fruity Perique mingles and dances in and out, providing some more complexity to the blend. Absolutely fantastic! 11 stars out of 10! 😄

Oh, in the meerschaum bent apple.

Not a lot of time for smoking this afternoon so I’m squeezing in some Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Dark here and there.

Finishing the day with Engine 99. Using up the last bit I had. Was going to have Haunted Bookshop but I only have an ounce left and all the online shops seem to be out. Hard to choose my favorite English.   Maltese Falcon is very nice. Oriental Supreme is a bit milder and available in bulk. Quiet Nights is my favorite but not available in bulk. There are so many good ones.

It’s one of the most incredible nights here in a February ever. It’s 50 degrees and I have my front door open. For some reason it’s inspired me to smoke some Orlik Golden Sliced in an antique meerschaum.

Thanks! Since I first got it I’ve never been able to bring myself to give it a true thorough cleaning and waxing just out of fear of messing up its looks.

I think many of us might qualify as codgers regardless of our tobacco choices 😉

I started smoking pipes long, long time ago. I think I smoked my first pipe about the same week that my wife was born.

I completely tore my bicep tendon at my elbow this afternoon, so I’m smoking my first pipe of the day while lamenting the loss of a functioning left arm.

I’m smoking Pipe Force Episode VI in a BC calabash.

Long day for me..... I scraped up the last of my Molto Dulce for my Stanwell Featherweight. That pipe generally doesn't get anything right but with Molto Dulce it delivers a great honey first smoke.

Snow and rain here, gonna smoke the same as the old king here in Denmark did. English blend that does the job.

Just tried Germain’s Royal Jersey Perique Mixture. I think it’s very good, though it’s fresh out of a newly-opened tin and I smoked it in my calabash, which is still being “broken in”. So, I expect it will be excellent in a couple of weeks. I’m surprised some reviewers aren’t more pleased by this blend. I think it’s great (and will only get better with time).

I dabbled with some more of my Brigadier Black sampler pack- this time in a cob. I used to think that all I cared about was the casing flavor. This reaffirms that the casing is only as good as the tobacco that goes with it. The supporting tobacco taste is just not great. The casing flavor is strong but it feels like it is trying to cover up sub par tobacco. I will be putting aside the rest of Brigadier Black for a while.
