It works for me for a lighter afternoon Virginia smoke. Nothing deep or complex, one of those I don’t have to think about it to enjoy it kind of smokes.

This pic is from yesterday, but, forgot to post it. My first “fold-n-stuff” of Presbyterian Ordained. Surprised by the difference in how it burns and tastes from finely rubbed.

Decided to make February “Daily-Virginia” month - a sort of study in my least-favored blend family - to gain perspective and maybe even increased appreciation.

Good idea! It’s always worth experimenting a little. You never know when you’ll learn something new. It’s also useful if all it does is confirm your initial judgements. Nothing to lose, yet much to gain 😊

Btw, Joseph, have you managed to procure some Anthology 2023? When it comes to straight Virginias, it takes some beating, in my humble opinion. Capstan Blue is also up there among my favourites and certainly recommendable.

Have you got any particular blends lined up for your experimental study?

@Lee Thanks for the recommendations. Ted also recommended Capstan, but the milder Gold Navy Flake. Those will be down the road a bit, if ever. I bought the Presbyterian Ordained Danish Flake specifically for this exercise. That’s enough, and, I won’t get through it before the end of the month. I also have 2 other Virginias from Country Squire, (Green Dragon & Kingsfoil), and “Give Me Liberty” from the Seattle Pipe Club if I want to change things up. 😎

That’s fair enough. I’m interested to know how the experiment goes anyway.

Pipe Force Episode VI in a vintage Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen. I am really enjoying this tobacco, I just ordered more while it’s available.

Pipeforce Episode VI is a new release. Do you think there will be a shortage?

These are signature series blends, not regular production. Episode VI is already sold out at Tobaccopipes and elsewhere. I get the feeling, but I don’t know, that they made more in this series than the Birds of a Feather series, since those sold out within a day or two of release, but once they’re gone, that’s it.

February will be my Latakia Tour month. Enjoying Syrian, Cyprian and Turkish. A fascinating travel through the mysteries of the dark leaf.

The differences between Syrian and Cyprian Latakia are clear. The sadly missing Syrian Latakia has much more nicotine than Cyprian, but has a mellower and dry flavor, smoky without sweetness. Cyprian Latakia has a more assertive flavor, with some sweetness and less nicotine. The absolute novelty is Turkish Latakia. It´s smoky but much mellower in flavor than it´s cousins. In fact, I´m getting to know it now and I found it surprising.

HH Vintage Syrian contains a bit of Dark Fired Kentucky that enhances the dry smokiness. London Blend 1000 has a generous dose of best quality Cyprian Latakia and a rustic flavor provided by stout matured African Virginias. Pesse Canoe Latakia Flake 40 is a very mellow silky smoked oriental blend.

You have made me curious about the Turkish Latakia. I’d like to try it, but I’m not sure which blends to look for. Do many manufacturers use it, or is it pretty rare?

The only manufacturer I know using Turkish Latakia is Gladora Tobacco, that has just reached the Spanish market. I included the promotional leaflet in the topic I opened about the subject. I suppose this tobacco can be available in Germany. I heard Koop Tobacco distributed it. One member of this forum said that C&D is using Turkish Latakia in a new blend.

C&D has recently started using turkish latakia in a couple of blends. The small batch From Beyond and in the rebranding of Two Friends English Chocolate. I don't know if it has or will start replacing Cyprian or not though.

I can't imagine a replacement without changing the whole blend. Turkish latakia is completely different.

I'm calming down after my Superbowl yelling and screaming. Lol

Sitting outside enjoying some Country Gentleman tobacco. It's a light Vaper.

What a game.

I'm outside cleaning my pipes and smoking some Engine 382 in a cob. Trying to get used to deer tongue flavor.

Deer tongue. I get that some people just can’t stand it, but I love it. It shows up differently in my experience based on what type of blend it’s in. I keep a jar of it for when I want to add some to a blend. Which direction are you leaning on it?

The first time I tried it I have to admit I didn't live it. But as I'm getting to know it, it's becoming more and more pleasant. I still don't get vanilla flavor. To me it's more of a birch beer taste. Don't know if you have ever had a birch beer. In New Jersey area it used to be fairly common. I get hints of that taste. 👍

I don’t get vanilla from it either. It does remind me of something from my childhood that I have not been able to place. I have not tried a birch beer, you have me curious. I’m going to.

There is a hamburger drive in company here in New Jersey called Stewarts. They sell there own root beer and birch beer nationally. Great stuff.

I just got an email from tobaccopipes.com that episode VI is back in stock and episode I is being released tonight at 6pm Eastern. I'm on my 3rd tin of VI cuz it's good stuff as you know! I liked the IV and V but the VI is my favorite. It doesn't hurt that the tin art is quite groovy on all of the episodes. 😂

Have a great day!

Thanks for the info! That’s cool. I love VI, I’ve only got about one bowl left from the tin I just opened and I can’t imagine not opening another right away.

This Germain’s Royal Jersey Perique Mixture is special. Already, only two days after opening the tin, it has enough flavour to make it better than Elizabethan Mixture, in my opinion. It still has a long way to develop if it’s ever going to overtake Carolina Red Flake with Perique, as my favourite vaper. But I’m going to enjoy the journey! 😊 It is fruity, spicy, peppery, sweet, occasionally a tiny bit sour. A really, really enjoyable smoke.

My usual pipe.

Escudo Navy Deluxe in a Country Gentleman cob. I haven't smoked a VaPer out of this pipe before. Took 1 bowl to get rid of something Latakia ridden, then 2nd bowl was great. This might be my new VaPer pipe or at least 1 of them.

Nice pipe! I like the contrast of colours. I think I’ll have to look at a few stems next time I order a few things from the States.

Once again you’ve been getting these great forever stems while I look at my dull, lifeless ones. Since I’ve seen yours I have thought about ordering more, but I’ll probably just get more like I have in the past. I’m happy for you, they look fun. 🙂

I am ordering some forever stems and another cob. I have neglected my cob lately and I forgot how well they smoke.

Second bowl of The Royal Yacht today. I have never had it in all this time of pipe smoking until today. I find it similar to Ye Ole Signe but sweeter and better imo. Smoking it in my DIY churchwarden again because to hell with letting a pipe rest.

You know honestly I can't taste or even smell plum but the sweetness does seem more fruity than sugary.  On a side note, I hate plum trees.  I grew up with one that produced and it was always a mushy, smelly mess when mowing the yard. Thank God the one I currently have doesn't produce lol

I’m going to be pretty much sticking with one blend while visiting my parents in England (near Manchester). That blend is Royal Jersey with Perique, from J.F.Germain’s. I want to explore each stage of its maturing process! It’s already completely delicious. Smooth, fruity, sweet and peppery. I’ve bought 4 tins more! 😄

Opened up my tin of MacBaren Plumcake. Smoking in one of my nameless briars. So far I am enjoying this blend. Not too much latakia and a nice flavor.

You seem to really enjoy latakia blends. The description of this blend says "a whisper of latakia". It tastes like a bit more than a whisper but i would still call it a light latakia blend- perfect for me as I don't smoke latakia very often.

Yes, I really enjoy Latakia blends, but also others without the dark leaf. A whisper of Latakia can make a huge difference to round out a blend, and this can be the case with Plumcake.

I'm devoting today to a favorite of mine. Mac Baren Golden Extra. When I can afford to I want to cellar a bit. Just to see how it ages.

Oh in my legend cob.

It’s looking like a Mac Baren afternoon on the thread. I’m smoking Club Blend in an Ehrlich meerschaum. Only a few bowls left in the jar and mostly broken little flakes at that, time to pop another tin.

The last bowl of Pipe Force Episode VI from the tin I opened last week. I’m smoking it in a BC calabash.
