Quick sit down before I go hiking. Butternut Burley in a cob.

Not fancy but damn it sure hits the spot sometimes.

Smoking C and D Star of the East in a Rossi Vittoria this evening with a mug of nettle leaf tea before bed.  Hope all well with everyone in Pipe land…

Did that Stone Haven come via unicorn?

Nope, bought it regular price about seven or eight years ago. The only blends I rely on unicorn delivery for are certain tins of Murray’s production from the 80’s and 90’s. 🙂

Yeah it didn't used to be quite this bad. I recall I could snag some Stone Haven or Germaine's Brown Flake (I freaking love that stuff) pretty regularly 12-15 years ago.

Good stuff but benefits by scarcity more than excellence, imo.

I was still glad to stumble on the jar I have.

Very accurate and well said.

I've been jumping back and forth between H&H Fusiliers Ration and Windjammer all day today. In my Savinelli Sherwood Rock Briar.

I'm curious about Fussilers. I've never smoked it. Might snag a tin next time I order from Pipes and Cigars.

Hearth & Home Black House in birth-year DUNHILL LBS. Yet another first tasting, along with yesterdays H&H MAGNUM OPUS, both highly rated Russ Ouellette blends. This one won the 2011 Chicagoland Pipe Show's "Balkan Sobranie 759" match contest. ...meh ...neither one will be bumping into my favorite English blends list. But, good to have on hand for a well rounded selection. These are reputedly great examples of early-mid-20th century classics. Now I know what they're like.

[EDIT: Oh, and they're kinda special because my son got them for us to share. Glad any time we can hang out together over a pipe and a pour. 😀 ]

That’s great, context can transform the mundane into the extraordinary.

I heard very good things about Russ Ouellette´s latakia blends. Specially Black House, Magnum Opus and White Knight. I just could smoke a tin of his John Cotton Smyrna version. Superb.

I’ve been unusually busy again and just squeezing in smaller bowls of Kendal Dark throughout the day. I’m sticking with it now, in a TV churchwarden.

Oops wrong Pic. Not that it matters. But I was going to post anyway and say that this old Night Train is just fabulous. I'd gladly smoke it exclusively. So sweet. The edges are gone. Seems a little milder in the nicotine dept. Still solid. But I recall Night Train being borderline intolerable at times. Up there with OJK in terms of strength.

Carolina Red Flake with Perique with a pinch of BCA. I have really been loving VaPers with a bit of sweetness and if there is some DFK even better. I just ordered a bag of Elizabethan Match on Ted's suggestion along with some blending Perique and DFK.  I will play around with it.

I'm interested in this. I do enjoy a brown VA flake. That and Burley Morning Pipe stood out to me most on his website.

The tin note is very inviting, and promised amazing things - I picked up buttered toast, brown sugar, and a hint of something like coffee or cocoa. Then, my first tasting was ...nothing.  It tasted like steam to me...

Then I realized... Of course!

The last few days I've been having a big bowl of Opus or Black House to get used to these strong classic Balkans.  Need to clear my palate to truly enjoy this one. 🙃
