Funny enough this was my first tobacco that I bought when starting to smoke a pipe, not to long ago. I went in to a store with pretty limited stock and I said to the guy to give me two tobaccos that he recommended. I don’t think he even looked. Just grabbed two blue tins. Old Dublin and a blue Solani. Both have become favorites.

The tin note is pretty much in your face strong. Leather. Bonfire. Lagavulin. When lighting it burns easy but I don’t think you will get the best out of the bowl by puffing to hard. I’m using a bent Peterson Dracula when smoking English blends with a lot of Latakia and it is a great match imo.

I am going to continue to explore the land of the English but I have to say, this is fantastic and I believe that the rest I smoke will have to be measured with this.

I've smoked a lot of Old Dublin over the years and always have a few tins in my cellar. You will get the incense notes the second you fire it and will taste subtle sweetness throughout the bowl. Smooth and does not bite but when pushed hard, the taste becomes sour and somewhat ashy, and at this point the smoothness is never back. I recommend sipping to get the best out of it. The room note is strong. Burns clean to white ash and leaves a pleasant after taste.

I bought this to try another Peterson Latakia blend.

Tin note is smokey and sweet. Nice ribbons as Peterson tends to do. Packs and lights easily enough. Taste is Latakia forward, but otherwise very well balanced. Has a nice sweetness to it. Nice smooth flavor that stays consistent. I really like this blend, I’m gonna have to buy more. I’d say this is more of a Scottish mixture than an English, but it doesn’t matter. Decent nicotine hit, but not strong. Could be an all day smoke for me, too bad they do t do bulk bags anymore.

Well worth trying. One of the better Latakia offerings from Peterson.

very very nutty experience with this tobacco that take a little step out from mild EM to stay at the edge with aromatic ones. Yes a hint of latakia is present and also a little spicy basma leaves but if you are seraching for a mild english, in my opinion 965 mixture is the right one. there is also an undefined nutty flavouring. A good smoke but non an excellent one.

This tobacco piqued my interest when I saw it in a pass-around-box we have going on in our pipe community. I love many of Petersons blends, especially the Irish Flake, University Flake and 3P's. They have this "Old Time Feeling"-charme to them, so I was excited to try my first english blend made by them.

Cracking the tin I was surprised by the very fine ribbon-, almost shag-like, "Dunhill-esque" cut. The tin note is simply lovely and smooth...creamy, smoky, richly ethereal and you can clearly make out the Orientlas used in here. The look and scent is very similar to that of Dunhill's 965 Mixture, yet I'd have to say that I personally find the Old Dublin tin note a tad more appealing.

Lighting it up you instantly get spoiled by a very creamy, smoothly spicy and savory-sweet english blend that would be a great introduction for anyone new to english blends imho. The Latakia is present all the time, yet never obtrusive nor overshadowing the other ingridients. It's smoky, woodsy, peaty, creamy and slightly sweet. Usually I don't get much of the Virginias in an English blend, but in Old Dublin they sport a delicate, ripe sweetness that acts as the sweet Yang to the spicy Yin part of this blend. So does the Oriental, which is dry, ethereal, woodsy and sweet. The Basma is very(!) smooth and lacks the (imo pleasant) "sharp-edge" quality some other Orientals have. I don't get too much of the Cavendish, but it may be co-responsible for the creaminess and toasted-sweet character of the blend.

A synergetic interplay of spicy-savory and creamy-sweet. None of the ingridients takes the lead, but they melt into a harmonic melange that offers a pleasant complexity and rich smoothness. It not only compares very well to 965, but also takes a lead over it for my personal taste. Early Morning Pipe also is in the same vein as Old Dublin is. Creamy, smooth, with a moderate Latakia punch and pleasant foundation of excellent, matured Virginias and first class Orientals. Yup... Peterson knows how to blend some wonderful tobacco! I'll highly recommend this for English lovers looking for a smooth All-Day smoke and/or a replacement for the soon to be discontinued Dunhill blends such as 965 or EMP. As well as to English novices who are interested in a quality english with charme and incredible smoothness! Strength is lower half of "Medium", but a tad over "mild to medium".

**Update:** ~31mg of added FLAVORING to 1000mg of tobacco (or 3,1g on 100g tobaco) As I don't perceive any flavoring though I rate it as "extremely mild" Source: https://service.bmel.de/tabakerzeugnisse/index2.php?detail_id=104604&site_key=153&stichw_suche=old+dublin&zeilenzahl_zaehler=1

I found this blend to be lighter than average when it came to Latakia. Moderate Latakia content is not a bad thing at all, but this is no Lat bomb.

On light, the Latakia dominates, but as the bowl progresses, there is a growing savory taste that I very much enjoyed. I really like it when I get that distinctive umami/Worcestershire sauce/meaty flavor, and that happened a few times my 50g tin.

So, overall a very tasty, solid Latakia/Oriental blend. However, one note of bias: I smoked most of this tin while breaking in what would turn out to be one of my "magic" pipes. This pipe delivers such an excellent, consistent smoking experience, that I look forward to smoking Old Dublin again in a range of pipes to see how it fares.

This is a very good English blend. The VA's form a nice sweet foundation but one that is more felt than tasted. Lat. is good and smokey but at a percentage that does not overpower the Orientals. the Oriental's have a sweet floralness about them and really shine in this blend. They stand out more than the average English a very well done blend. However, it will bite and it does not have me just wanting another bowl. This is certainly someones go to blend but for me it is just another very good blend among the many other English's that are out there. It is worth revisiting in the future but for now there is no need to buy enough to get the discounted rate.

Upon opening the tin, I was greeted by the aroma of latakia with the oriental and basma adding a bit of spice that I couldn?t wait to try!

On first light, I met a strong taste with all the components of the blend boldly announcing their presence. At first, I didn?t like it, but after a couple of bowls, I decided to give it a more serious try. By taking it easy with long, slow puffs, I was rewarded for the effort by finding a tobacco I enjoy. There are nuances to this tobacco that, for me, required a nice, quiet place outdoors in which to contemplate the interplay of this blend. There is a point, somewhere during the middle of the bowl, where Heaven meets Earth for just two puffs.

Later in the bowl, this blend seems to mellow with the latakia smoothing and rounding the flavor. The finish leaves my mouth feeling sort of ?relaxed? in a way that is hard to describe. I always end up wanting more the next day.

As the tin ages, OD seems to become smoother, loosing that blast I noticed with the first several bowls. Although, the great contrasts found in a fresh tin diminish, I still enjoy it. I plan on using a sealed jar on my next tin to preserve the freshness as long as possible.

Wife Rating: No complaints.

Peterson’s seems to have a knack for English blends and this is one of the better examples that seems to have it all. Rich flavor from the Latakia and Orientals with well rounded Virginia and Cavendish base with no domination by any. This is a well balanced tobacco with no gimmicks. There’s plenty of nicotine and pure tobacco flavor so if you’re looking for a sweet aromatic with more flavoring than tobacco, pass this one by. Smokes cool and clean with no biting and little moisture ,so if you like English blends with a lot of character give this one a try. This is an underrated blend.

I've seen a lot of virtual ink spilled with this blend extolling it's almost heavenly virtues, so when I purchased a new peterson pipe I thought why not break it in with a peterson tobacco.

Opening the tin is a varied mixture of lights, darks and in between the smokey campfire dickensian squalor is there along with a slightly sour note from the basma and the typical Virginia notes. Packing is easy enough, as is the smoking, it burns away merrily never too fast or slow, room note is typical, you will not win over the non smoking crowd in any way shape or form. Strength is middle of the road, not too strong not too weak.

OK down to the nitty gritty, and the opinion which will probably elicit gasps of horror from the back. While I have enjoyed this blend, I don't think it is worthy of the hype. Yes the flavours are beautiful, but and the big but is if you over do the cadence on this, even absent mindedly getting slightly carried away with this, will kill the flavour. It becomes muddy, and slowing down will not bring it back, once its gone thats it no going back. It then becomes a labour to finish the bowl, which to me once it reaches that point its not worth smoking. However, concentration is key and if you can keep the flavour going it is a nice smoke and one i actually enjoy. Which begs the question is the extra concentration and work worth the end result...in my opinion, no.

It is a nice smoke but I feel with all the other latakia mixtures out there, there is much better mixtures which behave much more consistently and can fit a variety of situations from light and forget to a long session in the chair with undivided attention.

However, like I have said when it does give a good smoke and one I enjoy, so I will recommend this, on the caveat that you will need patience for it, but for the latakia fancier this should scratch the itch.

3 stars.
