Orlik Tobacco Company A/S Golden Sliced (Red Tin)
(3.33)
A blend of golden, fully ripe Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States and a smidgen of perique. Natural sweetness and freshness with hints of citrus.
Notes: Previous edits to this blend have averred that a dispute exists whether or not Golden Sliced contains perique. It does. Please note that the website stglanepipe.com states on its Orlik page that certain of its blends (including Golden Sliced) contain "fully ripe Virginia and a little perique." Moderator.

For a VaPer this is very mild. I love the flavor notes: To me, they are Rawhide leather, Hayfields, and old canvas. That may sound offputting, but it is actually a very pleasant combination and brings back a lot of outdoor memories for me. I love this tobacco and it will most definitely be part of my regular rotation. When sipped, there is no bite. If you hit it hard, it will bite.
I am very new to pipes and this is my first VaPer.

The archetypal bright Virginia blend.
I think there is a fruity topping on this tobacco, but it’s barely detectable. The Virginia’s are citrus forward, with a mild earthy barnyard note. The Perique provides a little spice on the tongue, but is hardly noticeable.
This blend is simple, but pleasant. A slow cadence will reward you with a mild, but flavorful sweet Virginia smoke. A must try for anyone that calls themself an experienced pipe smoker.

This was the first tobacco in which I experienced the full joy and pleasure of pipe smoking. While progressing to stronger, more niche tobacco's, Orlik's Golden Sliced has a permanent place among my jars.
First of all I recommend this tobacco with a tall glass of water to refresh the palate, and to be able to discern a list of subtleties that are revealed in the flake. A flake packed not too firmly and with just enough moisture provides everything that can be desired in the realm of sweet Virginias. On first light, the taste is paralell to the tin note. I find it to be a very exciting way to start off a moment with the pipe, and allows for a consistent progression of flavors as the tobacco reveals its hidden and nuanced essences. The initial hay and honey like sweetness matures slowly through the retrohale, developing into a enamoring and subtle perfume, worn by a lady who deserves the time and effort for a close and good taste of it. Be careful not to rush through this flake, a slow and methodical pursuit is essential to the rewarding nature of the blend. While I have never been bitten by this tobacco, hot and neurotic smoking can leave the smokers mouth with a feeling akin to a mouth full of sand and clay the next morning, be warned! I would say this about many Virginia blends, but to Orlik I would be more concerned about pace in order to fully enjoy the tobacco. There are rich maple and honey notes that thicken as the bowl progresses, along with notes near a campfire of dry, sappy pinewood. There is a spice revealed towards the last breaths of the bowl that almost tastes of fine cinnamon in the nose, well complimented by the innate sweetness of the blend. A classic and rewarding smoke to the slow and contemplative smoker. Enjoy and Bless you!

Ive just made it through my first tin of OGS. I cannot for the life of me understand how that is, but it is so. I do not review each blend i smoke, not by a long shot, and have mostly stuck to reviewing blends i smoke excessively, or the odd blend that i felt had something unique or noteworthy. this is tge very first blend ive reviewed after just one tin. I felt compelled to, because ogs was like coming home to a well loved friend. Its neither sharp, nor exciting, complex, or exotic. What it is, though, is exactly what i seek 8 out of 10 times i fire up a pipe. It is comforting, delicious, soft, and uncomplicated. It is the quintessential simple pleasure. A nearly perfect blend for my expectations of a pipe. It is exquisite in its simplicity. I hope that my enthusiasm for the blend doesn't wane with time, as has happened before...but i feel confident that it won't. My new go to.
Edit: after smoking two 100gram tins id like to add that strangely, i prefer this blend fully rubbed out. Not a move i pull too often. But i began noticing that the bowls i found sweetest, coolest and creamiest were those i rubbed out. Just my observation. Absolutely love this stuff, got several more tins on the way. Oh, and one last thing. There's perique in this blend, without question. Yes its very minimal. No, it doesnt really taste like a Vaper. But perique is present. Who are these individuals who insist that there isnt nor ever has been a smidgen of condimental perique in a tin that is labeled as containing perique? I dont understand it. If you think that your oh-so-sophisticated palate is so dialed in to whiffing out an odor that you insist that the people who ACTUALLY MAKE THE STUFF are wrong, and you know better than the longtime blenders, then you my friend take yourself too seriously. Enjoy your pipe. We can't all be right all the time.
Edit 12/17: while i don't mean to say that this is less of a smoke, i must say i am really not reaching for it any more, as peter stokkebyes luxury navy flake has done for me better what this blend once did. It is less lemony, burns cooler, and has a shade more perique flavor while remaining a lightly spiced va. A bit more nicotine, and cheaper to boot. This discerning judge has traded up, and as such must downgrade this to a 3 star blend

This was my first time having tobacco bacon! I have bought other flake cuts before, but this was the first time they had been pressed and splayed in the tin like layered bacon. I found this annoying, since the flakes wanted to stick together and kept breaking when I tried to peel them apart. The tin had a very mild sweet hay oder, and I knew I was in for a nice peaceful smoke.
The bowl packed nicely, stayed lit and burned long. Hearty clouds of smoke went in and out, without any harsh bite. A clean non-threatening blend you can smoke without much thought. I wouldn't call it bland, just don't expect to contemplate the complexity within.
In the end, I still prefer Escudo Navy De Luxe for that damp barn taste and more manageable discs.

To me, this is the epitome of an all day smoke, especially when the weather starts to warm up. A mild smoke with hints of citrus and grassy notes. I have grown fond of flake tobaccos and this one stands right at the top. I have smoked this in various briars and cobs and I do prefer cobs for this tobacco. As with all Virginias be patient and sip this one and you will be greatly rewarded.

I'm afraid I'm a bit late to the Orlik Red is awesome party but better late than never. This is a great, light and natural yet flavor-able tobacco. Yes. There is Perique. Not only does it say so on my tin I'm a Perique lover and I tasted a faint smidgen of the barreled leaf when I first lit up. Yet, it quickly faded and the cool Virginias took me through the tour throughout the smoke. If you are looking for a VA/Perique smoke this NOT it. This is a straight VA smoke with a touch of perique. You will get the naturally hay/sweet Va's not the Perique.
What a great smoke! Tasty, light, refreshing and good ALL THE TIME. Like Va's? Like flakes? Don't pass this one up. It's the Captain Black of Europe.
The Red Judge Makes this Dawg wag his tail!!

Perique or burley? I always thought there was a perique like ghost and attributed it to some kind of top note. I whole heartedly believe that the mistranslation thing is all marketing. I feel the "burley" was actually Green River Burley given a perique treatment, and thus they are not legally able to say "Perique". Turn your can over...it says 'perigue' not perique. That is definitely a g not a q. So they still are not saying it has "Perique". All that aside, this is a really good flake one that should be considered especially since it is so inexpensive for a tin.

Wanting to add more VAs to my collections, I bought this. It had good reviews on this site and was very cheap for a 40 gram pouch. So If I didn't like it, not too much to risk.
I read a lot that it has a flavoring added, but I really can't detect it in the pouch and not so much in the flavor. It does give off a slight citrus flavor when smoked. Espeically as you get further down the bowl.
I really enjoyed this tobacco and think it would be a great try for someone trying to get into VAs but still want a little flavor in their baccy.
The 40 gram pouch is a great buy for me because it's not as cumbersome as a tin and can be smoked on the run. The amount is also perfect because it will probably all be smoked before it gets dried out.
Comes a little dry in the pouch but it's at the right level for my tasting.

Haven't been disappointed by this yet. Smokes cool, has a natural virginia sweetness, and never bites. This is the real McCoy. Highly recommended.
