Centuries of tobacco craftmanship go into Amphora Full. In addition to the Virginia tobaccos an exact amount of burley and Oriental tobaccos from three continents balance the blend. And the result is a well rounded and slow burning blend. Amphora is the trademark of high quality pipe tobacco.

Notes: Made by MacBaren since 2006, the company owns the blend as of 2015.

Now reintroduced back into the UK, under the name of Amphora Full, this is due to new legislation that has been introduced in 2017.

The toppings have some flowery floralness as well as a deep fruitiness that includes orange and raspberry, the latter being more prominent. There's a little grass, earth, wood, tart and tangy citrus and tangy dark fruit from the Virginias, which are the main component, though the burley sometimes over take them. The burley is earthy, woody and nutty with a little cocoa and molasses, though the toppings sublimate the last two characteristics of the burley. The Kentucky is woody, little smoky, nutty, and earthy in a minor role. The Orientals are also background players, offering a hint of spice, floral, herbs, vegetation, earth, and wood. The strength and taste falls just shy of the medium mark. The strength is in the center of mild to medium, while the taste is a step shy of medium. The nic-hit is a couple of steps past the mild mark. The tobacco is ribbon cut with a little broken flake in the mix. It won’t bite or get harsh even when pushed. Fresh or dried, it burns at a reasonable rate to the finish. Requires an average number of relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. The lightly lingering after taste and room notes are very pleasant. An all day smoke with a very cool, clean, smooth, and slight creamy, floral, mostly consistent, deep flavors. Can be an all day smoke. The flower topping diminishes a little, while the fruit toppings and tobaccos become a little more obvious when dried. Your personal preference will dictate your preparation.

They call it "full aroma" and indeed it is. Some mistake "full" for being strong. This isn't. It's full of flavor, but not strong in the sense that experienced pipe smokers would classify it as a "strong" smoke. However, the room note is full, and maybe that's what they mean by the description. Goes well with anything you drink and anything you do.

The fellow at The Tobacco Store in University Pl. said that this is apparently being re-introduced into the American market. I hope this means that all Imperial's offerings will be; I'd love to be able to smoke Amphora, Gold Block and CAPSTAN on a regular basis.

A "drugstore" blend is a burley-based concoction, savagely cased with inexpensive chemical agents, sold in the provinces of the US at "dime" stores and "convenience" retail-chains (called, in an all-purpose kind of way, "drugstores",) usually in bulk.

This is not a 'drugstore' blend. The fact that it was once very widely distributed and thus easily available does not make it a drugstore blend. Anyone who can't tell the difference between this and a drugstore blend, probably can't tell the difference between Balkan Sobranie and "Oriental No 12", either.

AMPHORA, like SAIL, is an older, Dutch Aromatic Cavendish-processed blend. Virginia, Burley, and several condimental tobaccos are blended, pressed together, and steamed. These "married" tastes are then given a natural flavouring, in the same way that tea might be flavoured with oil of bergamot or mint, or coffee with hickory. Or Latakia is flavoured by fumigation, or burley by flue-curing, or Virginia by stoving. These are classic processes that, since the Golden Age of perfumed snuff in XVIII century France, have been carefully followed by age-old practitioners.

The Dutch have traditionally been masters of the subtle flavouring of tobacco. They do not assume that Cavendish leaf is merely a pretext for holding an added flavour. The basic blend is all-important. It is often suprisingly intense, too, defying the chiché that all aromatic blending is lightweight frou-frou. In the best Dutch aromatic blends, too, the flavouring is undefinable, chimerical. If you can tell, "this is cherry", then it is not a good aromatic. Good aromatics are few and far between.

AMPHORA Red is delicious. Virginia, Burley, orientals, and an indescribable floral soupçon build to a full flavour that is tobacco plus. Nothing is in any way overpowering; it has a beautiful balance and finish; the arôme adds the je-ne-sais-quoi.

Burley is burley is burley. Latakia is Latakia is Latakia. They are a positive category, like roast beef. Oriental tobaccoes, fiddled-with Virginia, fermeted Périque: these enter a more religious realm of mystery and surprise: little Merrie England has met New Worlds. Finally the Dutch bring magic and necromancy to the game with their sleight-of-hand parfumerie. I enjoy it all, and would find all-roast-beef-all-the-time BORING.

Although long gone, this one is in the memories of a lot of older pipe smokers (of which, unfortunately, I am one). it was my "go to" blend in my youth for two reasons, the aroma was indeed so terrific that it attracted the ladies and the second reason; well, it tasted great! You had the tobacco flavor enhanced with that something extra that Amphora Full Aroma was famous for. I am not sure what the contents really were, but I suspect both Virginia and Burley with the Burley pulling double duty by accepting the enhancements added to the blend. Just delicious and I wish it were still around.

I have wanted to try Amphora Full for some time having never tried before. With its return to the American market, I finally had the opportunity and I wasn’t disappointed. Given the name, I was expecting this to be a very heavily cased OTC aromatic. In the pouch, the tobacco is of a very thin cut and smelled pleasant, but not overpowering and unlike a lot of OTC aro’s it was fairly dry to the touch. It didn’t require much “dry” time and I think that some smokers will be comfortable smoking it straight away. At first light, I didn’t taste any of the chemical taste that I often associate with blends of this genre although I do taste a bit of it in the later stages of the bowl. The Burley leads the way with the Virginias balancing things out nicely. I hardly noticed the Turkish. There is no bite and it didn’t burn hot either. Amphora is sweet, but not cloying. The “fruits” were just right without being overpowering and the Burley has a bit of a chocolate note to it. In rating it in comparison to other OTC aromatics, I believe that this is my favorite, although if one considers Missouri Meerschaum an OTC blend, then I would give the nod to MM as still my favorite OTC. I definitely will keep a pouch of this in my truck for those times when I forget my tobacco! As an OTC definitely four stars.

From this point I taste almost pure tobacco with a strengh I not expected. I like it. It is a smooth and honest mixture and even a little complex

I beg to differ from some reviews here... AFA is a great classic and, despite being offeredin a pouch, or called a "Drugstore blend", AFA beats a lot of "prestigious" offerings on the market. Great cut, great aroma, great burning, great taste - dried fruits, vanilla and coco that are not overwhelming, you taste the tobacco as well - and it smokes DRY all the way down. AFA is superior to offereings like Davidoff, Stanwell, WO Larsen. Highly recommended.

This was my primary smoke for years when Amphora Red was on sale in every drugstore and grocery. They had coupons back in the day you could send in and get Amphora pipes as well. I have two in inventory I got that way back in the late 70's.

I am posting this from memory since I have not seen Amphora Red for years. This was a tobacco flavored smoke that had a slightly sweet smell in the room. It was not what most people would describe as an aromatic.

My wife liked it. If this were readily available, I would probably be smoking it still and might not have found pipesandcigars.com

I see there is a bulk copy out there.

Edit 11/18/13 I got some Amphora Red from a friend, and it is the 3-star rating I remembered. It was a familiar smoke and I enjoyed it a lot. Don't waste your time with the bulk copy. I bought some and gave it away. It was really bad (to my palate) and seemed to have a butterscotch topping.

Edit 2017 I suspect what I got was the wrong thing when I initially tried the match, and I have since tried samples of the match again. They got the topping in the ballpark, but the cut and smoking experience are different enough to change it from a 3 to a 2.5.

This is a classic tobacco. For me,is somewhat stronger than desired. Slow burning, witch is a good caractheristic. The Cocoa-Chocolate flavour and taste. cannot be scented easily, since the tobacco is strong and surpasses the flavours. Good quality, but recommended for people that need strong mixtures.

An excellent European aromatic tobacco. This is not your typical sickly-sweet, goopy, hot-burning, and flavourless American-style aromatic. It's quite dry right out of the pouch with very little propylene glycol, and it burns slowly and coolly down to a grey ash. Due to this dryness, it easily stays lit with very few relights. A very flavourful smoke consisting of cocoa, vanilla, floral, citrus, and a nutty natural tobacco taste. You won't find much sweetness here, but you will find a surprising amount of complexity. Aftertaste is also very good. I regularly smoke Dunhill English blends, and the strength of this tobacco was a pleasant surprise. I would rate nicotine strength somewhere between My Mixture 965 and Nightcap. Room note is also wonderful. You will get many compliments while smoking this.

It's easy on the tongue and is my everyday, all-day smoke. This is by far one of my most favourite blends. I never tire of it. You really can't go wrong with this tobacco. It tastes great, burns slowly and coolly, has a wonderful room note, and it is affordable. Plus it's readily available worldwide. It easily compares in quality and taste to more expensive European aromatics such as Peterson. There's good reason why it's been around for 60+ years. Get some now.

Amphora Full (Aroma) - an exceptional OTC blend.

Upon opening the pouch a gentle sweetness fills your nose, along with notes of chocolate, fruits like oranges, peaches and lemon. Accompanied by a sour-sweetish, almost woody (Orientals), as well as a citrusy note (Virginias). The Burley & Kentucky promote the chocolaty flavouring very well, so that the chocolaty note is the most noticeable to my nose.

The mixture of fine ribbons & broken flake pieces doesn't only look stimulating, but is also easy to pack and light.

On first light I get a multi-layered flavour profile. At first I perceive, deep and sweet nutty notes, before the mild citrusy Virginias and the sweet-sour Orientals come into play. The nutty flavour is consistent and supported by a chocolate/cocoa note. The flavour profile expands as I get along with the bowl. A gentle fruitiness kicks in and delivers flavours reminding of oranges, tangerines and maybe peaches. Along with a unobtrusive flowery note lurking in the back, that rounds off the taste even more.

Even tho the tobacco delivers a range of different flavours it's never too much, or obtrusive and certainly not artificial. All flavours come along pretty natural and melt into a melange that flatters the palate in a uncomparable way. A gentle spice is always present, which I find neccesary to keep this tobacco from being too sweet. There's perfect harmony and balance between sweetish, chocolaty and floral notes and the natural tobacco which delivers nutty, woody a tad smoky and just the right amount of spice.

To me - this is a masterpiece of tobacco craftsmanship! They have found the right balance. Exciting flavourings that not only match well to the tobacco, but also expand the flavour profile of the natural tobacco taste in a exceptional way.

No doubts left: 3-stars from me for a perfectly blended pipe tobacco, that's not only easy and steadily available, but also full of taste & quality an therefore an enrichment for any tobacco bar. For sure what's considered a "All-Day-Smoke" and I'd consider this a "semic aromatic", as the flavourings are unobtrusive and marry well with the tobacco. The "Original" aka Brown is better, so only 3-stars!

One of the few tobaccos that I can find nearly everywhere near where I live. I bought this one for the name "Full Aroma", as I enjoy aromatics with a good room note. It disappointed.

It seemed pretty average or maybe even slightly below average in every regard. The taste was too mild, room note wasn't as nice as I expected either.

It would do in a pinch if I needed some tobacco NOW rather than wait a few days to order something nicer online.

Overall, not bad, definitely smokable, just pretty average.

Got a bit of a sour taste near the end of the bowl, but no harsh biting or anything.

This is one of few blends I can find locally. I had to smoke some aromatics before I got my hands on well, "straight" tobaccos.

Smells good in pouch, comes in right moisture. Packs and lights easily. Smokes on the dry side for an aromatic.

Wife loves the smell. Taste (and nicotine) leaves me wanting more though; especially with a name like "Full Aroma".

All in all, it's nothing to write home about but slightly better than most aromatics since it won't bite you that much or leave you with a handful of dottle.

it's mentioned several times but I'd like to repeat anyway, this blend consists of burley, virginia, oriental and kentucky (burley and kentucky being dominant) so you get almost cigarette-like flavor from this blend. no surprise there since it's produced by imperial tobacco. it's definetely not an A class blend for the experienced smoker but it's not as bad as other drugstore offerings, infact it's quite above drugstore line (or "lane" I should say?) it's absolutely an "in between" blend. I used to smoke this a lot and still keeping a pouch or two for emergency (though turkiye is one of the biggest tobacco producers --ranking number two-- we don't have as many alternatives as one would imagine) Less than half the price of superior blends but much better in quality and taste compared to those drugstore blends.

Being ultra sensitive with my gums/tongue never got tongue bite (you should -literally- be smoking like a chimney to get one) easy to keep lit and tastes best smoked with a meerschaum pipe. Probably you won't get those oranges, raspberries or floral notes the pouch promises at first or second smoke but through the end of your first pouch you'll decide not to buy any other drugstore blend ever again.

If there was a pipe smoking course A to Z, then amphora full aroma would be my choice to start with. I was lucky to start with this.

PS. compared to superior blends it deserves 2 out of 4 but as I said I see it somewhere in between and price/performance ratio led me towards 3 out of 4. Simply; recommended to beginners.

I finally bought a pouch of full aroma. Quite an impressive aromatic guys, I might add. Right of the bat, it seems to be more of a broken flake than a ribbon cut. Very moist out of the pouch, with a sweet nose resembling something in between dried fall fruit (plum, dates, quince maybe'?') and dark cocoa, perhaps a little floral but very subtle. Whenever I open a tin or a pouch I hardly have any patience to dry it out, so I figure I load it in a Dr Grabow with balsa, in order to tone down the moisture. This is one of those aromatics that actually tastes the way it smells. The burley is quite up front, but very nicely balanced by the other tobaccos, being able to feel a burley smoke with just the right pinch of Kentucky, oriental and a sweet Virginia. It burns evenly all the way, and if you are careful you can smoke it without a relight if you do not tamp that often. 3/4 down the bowl ashing may be necessary, while the balsa filter towards the end gets really moist, giving the sensation of a wet straight casing draw. I tried to smoke it after 30 min drying, but for some odd reason I prefer it wet, as dry it gets a tad harsh. Overall, I am more than impressed with this blend, well above and beyond what one would expect from a pouch packaging.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a medium nicotine, well balanced aromatic with no candy like smell and rich taste, this is something I warmly recommend.

The aroma is a lot less now, i wouldnt call it full aroma these days. It used to be fruitier with an aroma of pound cake, roses and cherry/raspberry. Now its reminicent of that but toned down. People liked this because it smelled aromatic but tasted like tobacco. Its been diminished everytiime a different company took over. A milder smoke with plenty of flavor and even a bit of complexity. The ribbons are evenly cut and if anything Amphora Full is more of a ready-rubbed blend than it is a ribbon cut. The pouch note is lightly sweet, a bit spicy but not at all cloying.

The bulk of the flavor is provided by the Virginias, which are on the brighter side of the spectrum, and the added fragrances which lend hints of honey, clove and a faint berry high note to the finish. The Kentucky is what I enjoy most about Amphora Full. It sits deftly in the background but gives the flavor some much needed pep as well as a subtle smoky essence.

Like other quality Danish aromatics, I taste the tobacco first with this one. The flavorings are present but only come through in the most delicate of ways. This tobacco arrives ready to smoke and requires little to no dry time. It burns evenly but can get hot and bite if smoked fast. Still, one of Mac Baren's better aromatics.

Amphora bring back me to an another time when I have a hard time to find a good tobacco, I combine it with everything, and it is precisely this "red" Amphora I regularly brought from Italy, my neighbor now sadly deceased g. Carnelutti and that day when he arrived with a bag Amphora was a folk festival for me - young pipe smoker this days! But either way I'll try to be objective. At the time when I had I received the gift producing her company Douwe Egberts, and now to see on the bag - manufacturer is Van Neele. Tobacco seems to me that it was the same - it's a rich, aromatic Cavendish, a first when it opens the bag felt the intense smell of chocolate and a little less intense smell of figs that remain present the whole time smoking. Halfway down the pipe to carry the burley which obviously has a lot in a mixture prepared for Cavendish, but there is also a "fruity" notes that it is difficult to determine, perhaps some hazelnut ... They feel that the overtones of oriental tobacco, but only around "at the top of the charts" and of course Virginia to the mix gives the "body" and in a way, from beginning to end smoking holds the last word. It's not light tobacco. It's a nice, rounded mix, Cavendish, not "bite" to the tongue, but if you are careless risk "nicotine attack"! Otherwise tobacco burns beautifully and evenly, without a hitch is held zeal and remains only a small pile of white ash. In the palate and tongue long after smoking remains its aroma, flavor of chocolate, dried figs and hazelnuts ... Rating 4.5 / 5th These 0.5 for "Madeleine cookies"

I think you can't know if a product is good or bad unless you try it. i like Amphora Full Aroma as much as Virginia No. 1. compared to No. 1, there is no tongue bite, which is great. The aroma from the pouch is nice, it smells like a mélange of tobacco and fruit-liqueur filled chocolate.

For an ‘aromatic’ - actually Amphora Full Aroma is more of a crossover blend than a full blown aromatic - it is on the dry side, and it takes to fire and burns well - if a little hot - without any drying time but it still produces some moisture in the pipe. If dried for a few minutes, it smokes drier without losing any flavour. Either way it is easy to smoke the whole bowl without leaving any dottle, just a fine grey ash. And I also did not experience any tongue bite. Taste-wise it is very tasteful with a good complexity and decent sweetness. The aromatization is very congruent with the tobacco taste, a little bit of chocolate with a note of alcohol and berry fruit. I cannot discern the different tobaccos but the overall taste is nutty and I think I can taste Orientals the Orientals as well. Towards the end it gets a little bit ashy, but only a little bit.

Amphora Full Aroma is an excellent OTC blend, one of the best I’ve tried. It merits a full three-stars.

Love everything about it except it bites me badly. Had to ditch about 4 packs. I have never seen pipe tobacco cut so fine, maybe that's why it burns quick, hot and bites. If it didn't bite,I would smoke it all day.

July 2018 wow!5years since I tried it last . Happy to report that the cut is now broad and therefore it burns much better and there is no tongue bite at all. Ifind the flavour a bit wantig but it is pleasant to smoke and I'll bump up my stars to 3

I will never forget this because this is the tobacco that started my pipe smoking journey five years ago. The elegant red pack caught my eyes and I was also tempted by the good price. Every time I smoked it I felt an OK strength and not too powerful aroma, mainly berries with a slight of vanilla but only slight. It had a slow burning so I had plenty of time to fully savor it and the room smell was very nice so I was not afraid to smoke this in the presence of non-smokers. A tobacco that will always remain in my memory, a classic.

I've been using this tobacco since 1971, and the room aroma was always well received in the USAF barracks day room, and in the control tower where I worked. I do understand that it is an acquired taste, but I've tried so many others....I like Troost also, I guess I'm just a cavendish lover. I recently found a good source, http://www.direct-smokes.com/amphora-red-5-x-50g.php, and can attest to this being the authentic product, from Douwe Egbert, Van Nelle Tabak, Netherlands. It will be mailed from a town in Israel, and it does take 3-4 weeks. I've grown so fond of this smoke that a practical review is difficult, but if you are looking for a slow smoking (rough cut), heavy, full and smooth cavendish tobacco (not much burley) to become accustomed to, I highly recommend this one. Any additional flavorings or treatments of the tobacco are well hidden. I find that it is best smoked in a room or in the forest with minimal air movement. I suggest that you make it special and prepare for it. There is good reason for it being so popular.

I had waited some time until after I had finished Amphora Original to smoke this one. Along with the original this is one I smoked back in the late nineties. I will not even pretend to remember what it was like so long ago other than the fact I liked it. I was fairly a newbie back then. Some time after, not sure when but it disappeared from the market. I may be completely off base but I believe it had to do with import tobacco tax increases but who knows for sure. I really do like the packaging, looks classy and upon opening was greeted with a wonderful scented pouch note of fruit and floral fragrances. I will leave it to the experts to dissect the individual casing/toppings on this one. It smokes cool, clean with a mild aromatic taste. Due to its mildness, the full aroma obviously must be the room note or so I read somewhere. I had purchased an Amphora-Holland Bulldog X-tra-722 pipe from an antique store up in Ramona, CA for the princely price of ten dollars and sanitized it, (Everclear Salt Bath), cleaned it up though actually this one was in really great condition. Needless to say, this is my Amphora smoking blend pipe. I really like this and yes, the extra star may be nostalgia but if you like Dutch Cav Aros give this one a try. It does not taste overly flavored. When this is gone, I will go to the Black Cav and see what that is like and who knows I may buy one of each of all the others also.

To be honest, Amphora Full Aroma is not what I was expecting from an Amphora blend.

It packs, lights and smokes quite well, although for me it came very wet and I had to dry it a bit. Even after that, I sometimes struggle with a "soggy" smoke when giving Amphora Full another chance. The aroma is pretty flat and I have trouble pointing out any interesting notes in it. There is some fruity sweetness, some citrus, a slight hint of vanilla and maybe a little bit of liquor. For me it's just a boring smoke.

All in all, it's not a bad aromatic, there are just a few better ones to choose from, like the similar but superior Special Reserves (both no. 2 and no. 8). Still, for someone else this blend might fit in well and I see how some people enjoy it.

When I was a novice, I heard a lot about Amphoras, and other low end mixtures available in Italy as Classic Forte, or Clan. Still I can't comprehend what's so special about these kind of mixtures..I do think these are 100% drugstore mixtures.

Anyway, those "grandpa advices" not always are good advices. I find this tobacco to be fairly absent. It takes no position, I can't see the complexity. With Forte at least you know you're smokin cigar leaf, cut into fine fine shag but it's straight earthy full kentucky..but about this Amphora, I don't know what to say. It shows no "courage or fantasy". Less then average mixture.

Amphora-Full Aroma.

The ribbons look quite chunky. There are a few that are more like broken flakes, being too robust to be ribbons.

I try to label what the misc./other flavours could be and the only thing I can come up with would be coco. It smells quite chocolaty to me.

I find this to be the same situation with the smoke. It's not a massive chocolate note like Bobs Chocolate Flake but again it's a noticeable addition. After the chocolaty taste I can pick out a sort of honey type of sweetness and for me this becomes stronger about halfway through a bowl.

This burns very evenly and consistent but it does seem to smoke pretty quickly. For a long relaxation I'd recommend something else!

The flavour of the blend is well reflected in the room note. This is good too as it's not overly heavy.

Nicotine is medium in this, for me. Maybe a little below but I find it medium.

To me, this falls slap, bang, into the 'okay' category.

Two stars.

Sometimes you gamble on a blend and you're pleasantly surprised.

I had seen this pouch at the local tobacconist every trip I made. It was one of the cheaper ones (In Japan all tobaccos are much more expensive than usual).

Opening the pouch I was surprised to see a nicely fine cut ribbon but also with some specks of broken flake. I am a flake fan and anything that was once in flake form is a fan of mine.

Moisture was a teeny bit higher than I prefer but not sopping we by any measure. Packing this tobacco is a breeze as I usually take the aforementioned broken flakes and put them in the bottom to act as a "filter" or barrier over the draft hole. After that, a typical 3 part bowl filling.

Lighting this tobacco is a cinch, I can usually make it down to the bottom with one match. It burns very evenly and leaves very little dottle.

The flavoring compliments the Va very well IMO. There is a subtle hint of zesty orange and some cloves. The room note always has fans and I can smoke this anywhere and ne'er does anyone complain.

My best smokes with this tobacco came from a Peterson Irish Second Bulldog. I don't think a Pot shape would be a good idea but a 3/4 inch tobacco chamber seemed to bring out the most in this blend.

I would highly recommend this tobacco for a beginner as there is very little tongue bite, it is a high quality leaf and can even be enjoyed by a "veteran"

Must be because I'm a novice (relative to the other reviews hereunder). Only marginally better than Captain Black's White. I know; apples and oranges.

It does pack well and it does have a nice burn but I found the flavour to be unremarkable. The War Department says she doesn't mind the aroma and the neighbours say that I've smoked some nicer tobaccos.

I do find it to burn cooler than I thought it would so that's positive. I purchased it because I was certain that my grandfather smoked Amphora and we all loved the room note. But this isn't it. Gonna give the original blend a go.

The Amphora Full is an intersting aromatic tobacco. The blend, in according with the pounch description and I trust in the pounch, is composed by Burley, Virginia and Orientals. Due to the flavoring I have difficult to recognize the Orientals. The cut is broken flake/ribbon, but is easy to pack and during the smoke doesn't require many attentions. The fragrance is intense and pleasant, fruity base notes can be perceived but it has a marked woody aroma, however pleasant and naturally sweet. During the smoke is possible to recognize floral aromas enriched by hints of fruit and nuts with slight perceptions of cocoa. In conclusion Amphora Full is pleasant tobacco, ideal for who like sligthly flavored tobacco. For the quality, for the easiness, for the relaxation I give three stars, but if it had been possible I would have given two and a half.

Cheap in price, but not in quality.

Nice cut - broken flakes, little bit damp but smokeable right out of the pouch.

Mild in flavors and strength, light-bodied smoke that is easy on the palate. Despite being mild it is pretty interesting and not that simple - sweet and fruity, slightly woodsy and smoky, little nutty and doughy - it is a bit of everything. Very light but sometimes a little harsh, can smoke hot but is still pretty manageable.

Not your typical gooey and overly-flavored aromatic. This blend still allows to enjoy the flavor of the tobaccos and complements it with some non-offensive toppings, which I believe to be some fruity syrups.

Overall - not overwhelming, pretty pleasant and safe tobacco with an attractive price.

What a find! I have a strong suspicion that I met Amphora already in my earlier pipe smoking days, but can't say for sure - maybe a friend smoked it. Anyway, this is a very good mix of quality tobaccoes and spices from Macbaren; the taste is well rounded and completely wholesome, with just a tiny hint of plums and dates, which I like. Large and somewhat hard ribbons and strands, a minor gripe is that the cut is fairly coarse and "unclean", that is, an average pouch will have quite a few stems and knots in it so some rubbing and shredding by hand is usually necessary when filling the bowl; for this reason it's not the easiest one to burn either, so expect some relights. Still, it's an all day smoke that is full and wholesome and just that tiny bit fruity without being overpowering in any sense.

By far my favourite supermarket brand in Finland at the moment.

EDIT: Had to change the rating of this - one of the first tobaccoes that I reviewed - to 4 as I noticed that otherwise it's way too easy in a 4-point system never to give anything a 4 in search of that one Holy Grail of Pipe Tobaccoes. Amphora Full is a staple for me and fully deserves a strong recommendation.

Is it only me who miss a Danish category? To me, this is not a full-on aromatic but a pleasant blend in the Danish tradition with a pleasant casing. Nice packaging, the tobacco was more of a broken flake or ready-rubbed than ribbon cut in my pouch. The pouch aroma has that wonderful bready toasty note so typical of Mac Baren; how do they do it? Packs and lights easily but requires a little bit of attention to keep going. Flaviour is a clean Virginia/Burley with a pleasant flavouring that is har to pin down. Don't really feel any of the flavours listed above. If I would criticise something, it's that the licorice sweetener is perhaps a bit too dominant. OK for me since I like licorice, but something to keep in mind. It's a fairly mild and pleasant smoke. Definitely a pleasant "all day" tobacco, albeit nothing very special. Surprisingly consistent throughout the smoke for this category of tobacco, and never gets ashy. Room note is sweet, one of those that could perhaps be passed off as incense. All in all a surprisingly pleasant straight-forward Danish. Will certainly buy again!

Back when Amphora could be bought in the US, I smoked Amphora Brown for many years. I was sent this pack of red by a buddy in Abu Dhabi to try and I am quite surprised at how good it still is. I expected a gooey, sticky, and cloying aromatic since it's labeled Full Aromatic. But it's not. It is actually fairly dry smoking, a great cavendish cut and rubbed from obviously pressed tobaccos, and it is mild and flavorful. It is dark brown in the pouch and just looks quality, having a soft berry like fragrance in th pouch, kinda reminding of Stonehaven. It has to be loaded a little carefully into the pipe as the tobacco is very large and thick and could be packed too tightly if not careful. It lights very easily and stays lit well. The taste on the tongue is very VA like which is it's base but the burley gives it fullness. It has a somwhat berry backdrop, again like Stonehaven. It smokes nice and slow and is very mild and no tongue bite at all. It reatains it's flavor all the way doen and leaves a dark grey ash and just a little dottle but no moisture in the bottom of the pipe. It's really a shame that we can't get it in the US as it's a very nice blend and I would keep it in my rotation. So I do recommend it very much. Not quite four star as it did not floor me, but for sure a 31/2.

Amphora Full Aroma is a tobacco that has pervaded my memories since I was very young. My dad, as a pipe smoker, would purchase this variety by the giant tin, and he'd take those empty tins and fill them with nuts, bolts, screws, nails, and anything else that he just couldn't find a place for. We still have those tins sitting in the garage, and I remember when taking up the pipe how I wished I could find a sample of this very tobacco.

Well, a couple years later, I finally managed to pick up a pouch, and I'm not displeased. In truth, I'm actually very surprised, for this seems to be an ideal drug store blend, in my opinion. Just a few dollars for a fifty gram pouch, though in short supply where I reside. There is enough here to quell my taste for more expensive alternatives.

Imperial Tobacco claims that this offering espouses a touch of "pure fruit blossom". Searching for proof, I opened the pouch to find a wonderful aroma, not of fruits or other such casings, but a traditional strong scent of unmistakeable tabacco, with a broken flake constitution and a smattering of color darker than I would have imagined.

Apart from these observations, I found the taste to be rather full, far stronger than something resembling Captain Black, soaking in additives. Judged against the myriad of other proclaimed Cavendish tobaccos, this one stands in its own class. There is little here to remind me of the accepted Cavendish designation, other than a guess on my part that this must be steamed. But, I don't know. I'm not one for rigorous categorization.

I tend to downgrade my reviews of aromatics heavily after greater sampling, so I may have to back off these claims.

This is another of those really good aromatics. It comes in a gold foily packet, and looks like a ready rubbed blend, with a few longer strands of ribbon in there. It packs and lights just fine straight from the pouch, despite containing some quite large chunks of flake. Do not be tempted to rub it out any more or it will get hot and bite. This can be a problem with the last couple of fills from the pouch too.

The smoking qualities of this tobacco are really good. It burns cool and slow, and the flavour is surprisingly complex, although very mild at first. The beginning of the bowl tastes light, sweetish and flowery, with fruity, vanilla tastes building as the smoke progresses. The vanilla taste is only ever a hint, and the bowl finishes with a rich chocolatey aftertaste from the burley tobaccos. The room aroma is as varied as the taste, a friend once commented that it smelt of chocolate, while at the beginning of the smoke it smells more floral.

This is definitely a very high quality aromatic, of a very different flavour from most, the casings must be very different to what is used in a lot of aromatics. A really interesting smoke, but not very heavy.

Is this 2020 "modern version" of the old Amphora Full Aroma an aromatic? is it "fully" aromatic, as the name suggests? Are its "companion" tobaccos Amphora Rich and Original aromatics? If by "aromatic" we intend a tobacco that will give the smoker the experience of aromas that are FOREIGN to the ones of raw tobacco, namely, aromas that have been added to the blend to ENRICH the smoking experience beyond the sensations provided by raw leaves (e.g., aromas of fruit, whisky, rum, etc.), my opinion is that this blend is not an aromatic tobacco in the classic sense. I understand and respect the modern trend of Mac Baren, namely the effort to let the smoker enjoy the taste and aroma of minimally cased raw tobaccos as much as possible (exactly as Samuel Gawith does). However, this is achieved by transforming what in the past were true aromatics into tobaccos which convey to the smoker barely detectable "other" aromas besides the ones of the usual Virginias, burleys, etc... Fortunately, this does not happen with excellent Amphora Black Cavendish Special Reserve, a sumptuous aromatic which has not been deprived (for how long though?) of its marvelous aroma of dark ripe fruits, sweet liquor, etc. Someone may object that Mac Baren offers to lovers of traditional aromatics the 7-Seas series. Ok, I admit, these USA-style tobaccos may partly meet the needs of a fraction of European aro-lovers. But why do we have to mimic the extra-sweet, "glycerin-ish" American taste? Why can't we enjoy a quality "Danish" blend conveying the dry and full aroma of a good Whisky, brandy or rum, with a touch of cavendish sweetness? I fully and honestly respect smokers who dislike aromatic tobaccos. I greatly enjoy mild English blends and natural mixtures from time to time. But I hope that lovers of aromatics may continue to savor their favorite blends, without feeling the disappointment of opening with great expectation a pouch of an alleged "fully" aromatic mixture, that in the end reveals itself once again as one more Va-Bur "minestrone".

Definitely not cigarette like .You can tell it's good quality. It's very mild and pleasant all round. Very low nicotine but sometimes that's what you want with a slow burner in a big bowl. I am impressed with this and wish I had tried it sooner. It seemed a bit low end when I have viewed it. But gave it a whirl and will definitely be smoking much more.and trying the original

Living in Australia, with its oppressive tobacco legislation, there isn't a lot of pipe tobacco to be found in a tobacconists these days. That is if you can find a tobacconist. There isn't a single genuine tobacconist left in the city where I live.

So when I say that Aromatics really aren't my thing, you might cut me some slack when I find myself smoking, and hence reviewing, this particular aromatic. Beggars can't be choosers as they say.

In the tin this is about the driest tobacco I've encountered outside of the C&D range. The seal was good so it came, I assume, as intended. It's a short ribbon of mostly light and mid brown with the occasional darker leaf. The tin note isn't as powerful as I had feared. It's just a generic sweet shop aroma. Unless you work as a nose in the perfume industry you probably won't be able to deconstruct the actual flavourings. I sure can't.

This burns fairly well and doesn't need much attention, as you would expect a dry tobacco to perform. It's sweet and bright on the tongue but beyond that, I couldn't taste as such anything beyond a mild sweetness. There is something floral to the room note, rose perhaps, but not at all cloying. It's tobacco with a touch of stuff. Simple. Constituent tobaccos? Good luck working that out.

I was surprisingly happy with this baccy. It's pleasant and well mannered and has no real faults. If there are still non smokers who appreciate side stream smoke, this would probably fit the bill.

An aromatic beautifully done. Many years have passed since the early 1970s but takes me back to those early days of piping.Amphora ‘Red’ just as I recall it.Recently had a number of pouches of the MacBarens Full Aroma.Glad I did. Some say a good OTC blend but for this smoker a tad more upmarket for that description.Excellently presented on opening but personally I decant and rub it further then replace.Just personal preference,no real need to.Packed into my larger sized bowl pipes not too tightly lights very easily with no fuss.Minimum relights along the way.To this palate I detect a deep chocalatey taste which lasts from top to bottom of the bowl.Very rich satisfying smoke indeed. No gurgle ,smokes cool,no bite, good thick smoke leaves very little fine ash.No overpowering aromatic Room note.Leaves me happy plus folk around me.This blending house has done a fine job with this blend. One of my favourites.Get some.

Yes, this is a very fine blend indeed. I can't really add much more than has already been said.

However - and sorry to the reviewer below for pinching your phrase - this has a je-ne-sais-quoi quality.

It doesn't seem to sit with any of the other blends based on burley/virginia/cavendish and has a very more-ish appeal that brought me back often for another bowl.

It's neither harsh not bitey and although it seems to have very little aroma or room note it's a blend that you will want to grace your tobacco blend collection.

Recently my evaluation towards Amphora blends has changed a lot. I smoked this blend when I just started smoking. Hated it and gave away the rest of the pouch. After 3 years I am smoking it again in a better pipe and greater experience of pipe smoking. Now I can feel the back aromas dancing towards the bowl, cacao is very pleasant and dominant. Burns nicely even though it seems a bit humid when I pack my bowl. I could manage to smoke entire bowl without lighting it again. Floral topping is noticeable when I smoked half bowl. It's very interesting. Medium in nicotine. Not something extraordinary, but still gives a good after taste. I didn't want to brush my teeth to maintain the aftertaste.

I am not old enough to remember this tobacco from the old days. It was around in the 90's, but I did not smoke it. When I got serious about pipe smoking, it was gone. However, I do remember the aroma from one of my college professors. I can recall standing outside on break and smelling this particular tobacco. So, my evaluation will be based on an aroma brought to mind from over 20 years ago. When you open the pouch, there is a sweet smell of natural tobacco with a kind of fruit topping that is very lightly applied. It showed up a little dry so I had hydrate it. It must be packed with care as the ribbons are kind of rough cut. It takes a light pretty well. Although, I did have re-light a couple of times. This stuff is definitely suited for a larger bowl. The flavor is sweet, but in an earthy kind of way. The taste is mild and the smoke was pretty full. The flavor stays the same throughout the bowl and there is a nice undertone of dark tobacco that is there to be enjoyed. Now, the aroma is not what I remember in that is a little more smoky than sweet. The wife will tolerate it in the house, however. This is truly a great smoke and well worth the money. The ash is fine and jumps out of the bowl with a knock. The pipe is left dry and not ghosted. I did run a pipe cleaner through the stem a couple of times and I felt the need to tamp a few times. Overall, this is a great tobacco even thought the aroma was not an exact replica of what I remember. I would still buy it again and wish they sold it in 12 oz tins.

I am a novice having only been smoking pipes for about 12 months. This was the first pipe tobacco I smoked as it is readliy available here in Australia. It is still a staple in my limited collection. Smells great in the pouch. The ribbon cut packs well and its mokes and tastes great, burns evenly and i've never been bitten by it (and I get through quite a bit of it). One of the best pouch tobacco's available here and we only have a handful to choose from (Borkum Riff, Captain Black and a couple of others) I see it gets some negative feedback, but not from me. I enjoy this and recommend it

I started my pipesmoking hobby in the late 70's, this blend was readily available here in the U.S. and I smoked it quite often. Now, of course, it is no longer available here, I sure miss it. I have an old empty tin of it here to remind me of those days when I could enjoy this blend on a regular basis. Although I understand that, like many older blends, it just is not the same as it used to be, not nearly as good.

update Now that this blend is available again in the U.S. I purchased a few pouches of this and just as I suspected...not the same old Amphora. Much lighter and sweeter than the original. I will smoke what I have but won't buy again.

The best drug store blend by far! In fact, far better than most so-called premium tobaccos too! I have more than 100 different tobaccos in my cellar and Amphora Full Aroma definitely falls in my 10.

The pouch aroma is of leather, herbs and tobacco. The leather note comes through in the taste too. I also pick up strong black tea and hints of oranges. The combination of notes may sound strange on paper, but they form a great taste experience. Unlike a great number of aromatics, the taste of tobacco is ever present: burley, kentucky, oriental and I definitely also pick up some tasty virginia. This is not a sweet aromatic like a vanilla or fruit aromatic. It's drier and manlier. You can even smell a bit of sweat in the room note if you search for it. The room note is pleasant but, for non-smokers, more of an acquired taste than the typical sweet aromatic.

The pieces of broken flake ensure a slow, cool smoke. This is a unique tobacco and highly recommended. Still available in some countries, I'll be stocking up just in case this treasure disappears completely one day.

I would not call this a bell ringer or a sublime way to spend your day with a favorite pipe, but it was a good, solid smoke with decent all-tobacco flavor and it was plenty cool. I don't think this stuff could bite even the wimpy tongued brats among us. (-;

I purchased a 50g pouch of Amphora Red back in September, 2002 while my ship was at a port visit in Victora, B.C. It was a treat since Amphora is not available in the U.S.

When I first opened the pouch, I was greeted by an overwhelming, straight-up tobacco scent. I didn't pick up on orientals, or the aromatics (vanilla, fruit, or otherwise). The tobacco was slightly rubbed out and packed nicely.

When I lit the first bowl, I wasn't impressed. This blend tasted sort of bland but smelled strong. Again, I couldn't pick up any aromatics at all, so I was a bit perplexed by that.

I had two more bowls in the following two weeks and was ready to say "Not my cup of tea, won't try it again". But, I tossed the pouch in my tobacco cellar and forgot about it, until today, four months later, when I was going through my tobacco stash and deciding what I was going to fire up with.

I said to myself "hey, what the heck, let's give it another whirl". The tobacco didn't seem to be any drier that before, but the distinctive "tobacco" odor I had mentioned was considerably more mellow now. I packed my Stanwell and lit. I found I was able to sort out the vanilla and fruit aromatics and was quite pleased. The tobacco was mild, had no bite, and the aroma was just as pleasant, with a hint of what I thought was possibly raisin. Overall, I now have to say that I will keep this one around.

I'll agree with the one reviewer who claims no one does the Cavendish process like the Dutch. I smoked so much of this in the eighties and early nineties and loved it alot. I like all the Amphora offerings with the English being my least favorite, followed by the Virginia. The Virginia leaf is aged well and the Burley is pretty neutral as it seems to absorb the flavorings well. All the added flavorings are done very well and only enhance the blend and help the true tobacco flavor come through. As far as Orientals go I cannot detect them but I'm sure they are there. It comes quite wet in the pouch so drying time for me was needed, if not you may get some gurgling. I really wish this was available in bulk, but such is life. Absolutely one of my favorites! Enjoy!

It was highly recommended as great aromatic of old days, so I decide to try it. I visited my favourite brick and mortar shop and got it together with Amphora Special Reserve No. 2 (which I highly recommend). When opened tobacco is wet and need to be dried. First smell is more tobacco than some full aroma. On lighting it (after drying) if I need to point out some interesting note it would be floral. Otherwise it was flat and not really interesting smoke. I know that lots of people love it and are not agreeing with me but for me this was disappointing. Maybe my expectations were too high due to other opinions and also due to name but it's as it is. Not everyone can have same view and experience. From something with this name you expect full aroma...

New pipe smoker of 3 months and have been on a bit of a tobacco buying splurge trying to find a tobacco I like and to be honest, I’ve been having a hard time of it. I do like Captain Black original and thought I’d just settle with it while I learn more but I went to buy more CB and for some reason I asked the lady who served me, what’s the most popular tobacco you sell. She quickly said Amphora Absolute ( that’s what it’s called here in Canada) anyway I bought a pouch took it home and lite up a bowl. I was expecting that I wasted more cash on a terrible tasting tobacco but to my surprise, I really liked it a lot. I would recommend this to another new smoker. I hope this review helps.

It is a pleasant aromatic blend, even though I would prefer a lighter aromatic from Amphora (Amphora original blend) in terms of flavoring/toppings. This one perhaps not an all-day smoke, but recommended to give it a try and can be part of the regular or semi-rotation for those that smoke aromatic blends often. It would come as a 2-star blend for me based on my re-review of this tobacco, though for aromatic lovers this might get a higher rating.

This is kind of like Scottish mixture with some ribbon and some broken flakes. Pretty dense blend. Perfect moisture to pack and light right away.

To me, this blend is somewhere between a Gawith Hoggarth DF flake (Kendal/bosun/#7) and a traditional Mac Baren VA/Bur mixture (such as golden extra & symphony). There's some really nice floral notes that aren't too far away from the "gawith essence", some chocolate, and just enough dark fired to notice. I also pick up some almond notes and a bit of stewed & sour fruitiness. Not much strength. Doesn't bite, and behaves well.

Overall I found this to be a very tasty, high quality blend. This is very close to qualifying as an all-day smoke, however I find it a little dull after the second or third bowl in a row. Satisfies my "dark-fired Lakeland" cravings, but with all the great charm of a typical mac-baren blend.

When I first opened the pouch, an old familiar smell hammered my nostrils. I didn’t notice any of the promised floral or fruit blossom notes, certainly no vanilla as indicated on the package (btw the faint gold print on the maroon background is impossible to read except in the brightest light). For weeks I tried to figure out what the smell was. About a month later, it clicked. Cocoa Krispies cereal. Over the coarse of the next year, the original pouch aroma transformed into what was promised. This is an example of near perfect dryness. The broken flake and ribbon mixture seems more scented than heavily cased. The smoker gets mild tobacco flavor and bystanders get a pleasant sidestream. Fairly simple and inoffensive. I had a few bowls that turned acrid and dirty tasting in the last 1/3. I probably wouldn’t buy this again unless in a pinch.

So, I've been going through some old tobaccos I found squirreled away and stumbled upon a rather dried out pack of Amphora. After sufficient re-hydration I fired up a couple of pipes. The aroma out of the packet contains hints of chocolate and fruit, typical of a Danish aromatic type. Upon lighting the flavours mature throughout the bowl. The first hits are bland and a little "pub ashtray" but after awhile the blend mellows beautifully. The casing is there but only very lightly (no gobs of crystalline sugar here). Amphora burns very well, possibly a little hot if puffed too greedily. Reduces to a grey white ash leaving no dottle. This could easily become my philosophers stone : an all day smoke.

I really enjoyed the subtle sweet flavor of Amphora's Original blend (in spite of my review going AWOL), so I wanted to try the Full Monty (aroma speaking). The pouch has some fancy gold packaging that helps elevate it beyond those cheap pouches on the market, the tobacco being of great quality is also at play here. The initial aroma is sour and fruity, but not in the advertised chocolate confectioner's playground.

The cut really showcases quality with some nice chunky unbroken strands that need some rubbing, great moisture, and isn't sticky from topping. The Burly comes through and compliments the orange well enough, though I still did not get much chocolate once lit. The nicotine is a bit below medium and there isn't much bite. Midway through the bowl it got a kinda samey for me, so while it is probably a good smoke, I had to go with 2 stars in difference to hoping it was more an Aromatic.

I really don't get what makes this a "full" aroma, as I found it to be less of an Aromatic that their Original blend, and while it lists a whole bunch of flavor profiles, I could easily see this as a Burley blend with more tobacco taste than frills.

Not so happy with it... After many years, I'm now giving a new try to all available Amphora tobaccos. And I am having many surprises. I gave 4 star to Rich, 3 to Black Cavendish and an so on... But just 2 to this. For just a main reason: I'm really not a Cavendish enthusiast. I mean, I can smoke it, and sometimes it can make me happy, but just so and so... For this tobacco, I was trying to understand what was wrong, and now I'm fairly sure: too much Cavendish here...it overhelms my beloved Burley and Virginia... I perceive it just like the Black Cavendish Reserve, just less elegant, just something more rude... Anyway, still a good cheap tobacco, more and more better if compared even with some more important names. And really no bite at all, and this is nice. It's just...too much Cavendish for my taste.

I totally agree with the @Pops Pipe very lighter flavor intensity and I also didn't pickup any noticeable pouch notes except very very mild fruity notes and after a while just hay like notes. But its a very good tobacco and oriental for spiciness and a bit Kentucky for body played a good role for occasional change of taste from aromatics. The mixture also blends very nicely with the heavy aromatics for a milder and more bodied smoke. I mix 20 to 30 percent Amphora into my aromatics and enjoy a very good smoke. Overall its a good mixture and I recommend for to get a taste of kind of straight tobacco and blending with other heavy to medium aromatics.

I very rarely smoke aromatics. I got this as a gift; I probably would never have tried it otherwise. I'm glad I did.

The casings are mild and the tobaccos themselves are quite good. The VAs come through, as does the burley. There is a nice body to the smoke, which I don't think I've ever experienced in an aromatic before. I think this has something to do with the inclusion of Kentucky, but also the cut of the tobacco, which is more ready-rubbed than ribbon. The blend smokes slowly and produces satisfying amounts of smoke. I get some spiciness along with the sweetness - very pleasant stuff.

I don't think my positive experience with this will make me rush out to try more aromatics - I've tried enough of them to know that the odds of me finding one I like are low - but I think I'll order more of Amphora Full Aroma.

An excellent tobacco with some complexity of tastes, a pleasant aroma, and excellent smoking qualities. A bowl lasts a long time and it is very mild on the tongue. Kudos to MacBarens for the quality of the constituent tobaccos. I smoked this mixture in the 1970s when it was widely marketed in pouches and big tins. This Mac Barens version differs from the original Douwe Egbert mainly in being ribbon cut rather than broken flake. Then, there were also green and blue steps in the scale, besides the red and brown which have survived.

The review by Eulenberg has a good explanation of Dutch cavendish. This is a Danish riff on the Dutch, but a good one. An easy three stars and a possible four.

This is Dutch style tobacco with black cavendish and a subtle taste of orientals. When you open it, smells nice like these small chocolate cakes with cognac. The tobacco I recognize is black Cavendish and the taste of Virginia, I do not recognize burley that much but there is some darkness in the taste. The last part it is a is sour so I have never completely smoked it until the very end as with other tobaccos. It has nice cut not very thin and brown color. At first light, it tastes like chocolate and Vanilla with nuts and with little alcohol and there is also a subtle taste of fruit maybe black cherry I am not sure. The taste is nice and it is a convenient tobacco that you easily carry, compared to tins. You can find it everywhere and it does not need a lot of space in my bag. In addition when I am in hurry and I have to go and I do not know which pipe to take and what tobacco and my wife pressures,'I choose full aroma with a corn cob and the job is done. The only problem is the biting part. Especially after three bowls at the same day. For that reason this is not a fine aromatic in my opinion. I buy this regularly and because it is convenient and I like taste but I wish it was of better quality. Update: Yes burley is there. Maybe deserves 2.5 stars rating, due to good taste, but no aftertaste after all. I would also like to mention that any flowerness results from the orientals and it is not a toping.

2017 update. It behaves better in corncobs, the taste is lighter with more nut taste than wood, as in a briar

I am a new pipe smoker. Well, for the first time in 35 years. I hope I am on track, let me know if I am not. Started off with a local Vanilla Cream Virginia blend from our only real specialist tobacco shop in Melbourne, Alexanders. Yes, and we have 4 million people in our city. But am now on Amphora which I have imported from the US. Still learning how to pack properly. Seems to burn so quickly. Have read "How to pack properly" Pipe tobacco here is outrageusly expensive. We are a nanny state. 50g (2oz) of retail brands is USD 50.00. And we have plain packaging. Kept under lock and key. I hope you guys don't end up like this. I think weed is probably cheaper. Anyway a bit of background from down under. BTW I like Amphora. Still tastes like I remember. What ever happened to Borkum riff ? Cheers.

Since yesterday I've managed to smoke several bowls of Amphora Full Aroma. An enjoyable experience as with Original Blend. The Full Aroma seems to me to be less Oriental forward than with Original Blend. The chocolate is a bit more pronounced as well with a hint of orange in the taste/sidestream. The pouch note reminded me of chocolate covered cherries, but never cloying and greatly subdued after the pouch has opened for several days. Each garners a solid recommended and 5 stars!

It's cheap and you can get it anywhere. Apart from that I don't see why you'd ever bother to smoke this over anything else. It really does't taste like much, and, while it smokes well enough, is not particularly remarkable in any way at all.

It's great in a pinch if you really need a smoke and don't have access to something nice, but I wouldn't bother to put it on your regular purchase list.

Second Update 8/2017: This is lately my go to blend for sitting out at night with my dog, watching the stars, just before bedtime. I agree with many of the other posters: this is not at all a typical aromatic. You can taste the good burley and VA and the aroma is almost undefinable. I am liking this more over time and hardly touching the few other aro's I have on hand. I forgot how much I like the old Dutch cavendish. It's at least a 3.5 pushing on 4.

Update: now available in USA. Ordered a pouch to see if it's as good as I recall. It is: rich flavorful taste; very slightly fruity and cocoa like with a VA/burley smoothness. Fabulous room note. This IMHO is very much like that of olden days. For the other old timers out there this is worth a look.

Started smoking this in 1970 while in college. I am going by memory but this is one that's still fresh. It was a rough cut cavendish. Packed well in any of my cheap pipes. Started out with a bit of something like citrus but in 5 minutes this hit the groove and was a round, not-quite-sweet, smooth smoke for the remainder of the experience. Plenty of the tobacco flavor came through. With just a little care, no bite. 45 years later if I could easily get my hands on it I'd still be smoking it.

This is one of those iconic must-try tobaccos many smokers like and many smokers started their hobby with. And being a true drugstore over the counter blend its readily available in most countries. The price is good and the quality of the used tobaccos, weather you like this blend or not, is good also.

I do not know about its current reincarnation but i am guessing the recipe will not have changed much or any at all, being a perfect example for the new school dutch blends.

The tobacco is easy to be packed an lit and burns without any hassle to an exceptional fine ash. Do not talk with the pipe still in your mouth or dust the vicinity with the fine ashes. But you have to smoke it rather cool and slow or it will develop some tongue bite. If you can manage that then its a nice smooth smoke.

The taste offers some slight vanilla with a hint of citrus fruit and of course the virginia is readily to be tasted. If you have the tongue for it you can make out the wooden aroma of the kentucky as well. It also gives this blend some body and strength so many people noticed in their reviews. I am not certain what the orients do in this blend but i am guessing it offers nice burning properties and maybe the hint of citrus to it.

Aftertaste and room note are rather mild, and of some light spicy sweetness which is not necessarily a bad thing.

This is a nice blend and usually people are not disappointed by it. I give it 4 stars for the fact of being an icon, if this where not the case i would give it 3 stars. This is really something you should give a try to figure if it floats your boat or not. Because if it does you just might have found one of the most hassle free tobaccos around.

Has a very distinctive smell and taste and because of this reason I believe it could be someones only tobacco for life. Burns ok, nice ash. A little tongue bite. I would suggest pipes with thick walled bowls with this one though. Even when its very dry, it tends to burn hot. Overall, one of my favorites now. A very fine tobacco, ideal for new smokers, as I was when I first tasted it. It gets a little annoying sometimes, especially after several bowls in the row, however it still could be a standard add-on to anyone's tobacco rotation. A small tip, that I read at the Hellenic forum of pipe smokers, would be to ''forget'' it for a while in a jar. That will reveal its flavors and distinctive fruity aroma, as it happened with me.

This was one of the first tobaccos I smoked, when I was a teenager back inthe 1960s. It was, and remains a pleasant and not overwhelming smoke. I'd rate it as the best of the OTC (drug store) blends.

It's one of those I'd recommend to a beginner pipe smoker, if you can find it. That recommendation comes not because it is of any ifnerior quality. It's not. But it is very forgiving. It's easy to keep lit. It doesn't bite if smoked too vigorously. It yields a very pleasant taste without having to coax it and will keep delivering that pleasant taste even if puffed hard.

Nowadays I can't find it in its original form bu have to get a few ounces in bulk in a 'match' blend.

This was my first pipe tobacco and I still consider it a very good choice for beginners, especially for those with a cigarette smoking background. I find "Full Aroma", however, quite misleading - I think there is nothing "full" about this. Amphora is neither strong nor very aromatic. I cannot detect much flavoring at all, instead it reminds me of high quality cigarettes. A good smoke but nothing mind blowing and no great complexity.

Amphora is easy to smoke: it lights well and burns well, even if it was packed into the bowl by a newbie; it also is a dry smoke and does not overheat easily.

I still enjoy smoking Amphora whenever I do not feel like experimenting with new tobaccos or when I feel like something...well, neutral. These days I consider this blend the quintessential everyday pipe tobacco.

I no longer smoke aromatics very much, but when I did this was old "Mr Reliable", and I still have some on hand. I am reviewing it as an aromatic - it would be pointless to compare it with Latakia or Va blends of tobacco.

I first encountered this tobacco around 1970 when I was a callow teenager. I liked it then and I find no difference in the blend now in 2012. The broken flake cut is attractive, the tin odor is to die for if you like citrus fruit, nuts and tobacco, and the room note is the most popular of all my tobaccos (so I am told).

It packs and lights easily, and burns well with the occasional relight (no problem to me). Not too "wet", and with mild tongue bite only, if smoked carefully.

As a "supermarket" or OTC blend it is hard to beat, if you like aromatics. I recommend it, and I dare say it would beat many a "custom" aromatic for flavor and aroma.

This too shall pass.

Best fresh and moist, is worse when you get a old pouch that has been in the shelf for too long which happens to me way too often.

Great flavour, gives me the impression of liquorice and dark chocolate. The taste is just right, and surprisingy full for otherwise this "light" tobacco, it almost feels as if this should be the standard of how tobacco should taste. Strong enough to satisfy you, but not too strong to overwhelm you even if you are not a chain smoker. Burns for medium speed, leaves medium fine ash, is medium in pretty every aspect, but the whole is greater than its parts, and it is perfect.

Not the tobacco that is going to rock your world, but as there is simply nothing wrong in this either, you won't be disappointed.

A few years ago I travelled to St. Claude and bought a Genod freehand from the maker Jacques Craen. He was smoking Amphora Red while he was showing me his pipes and I've read that it is the only tobacco he ever smokes. Not sure if this is actually true. Anyway, I decided to start the pipe off with Amphora and I've been smoking it ever since. I mostly smoke Va's and VaPers, but I still really like Amphora red which I always smoke in the Genod.

AR is a mostly natural tobacco blend. It does have citrus notes although I find it hard to discern a particular casing flavor. The broken flakes are very attractive and the burn is excellent. Most of the flavor is virginia and burley and the room note, so I'm told is pretty nice. If you are looking for an aromatic that burns well and has some tobacco flavor and a good room note, give this a try.

Ordinary tobac dominated by ordinary Virginia. When too moist this stuff can bite like no other tobacco i have know. You'll literally have bad mouth burns for days. Fortunately it usually comes at the right moisture content but the crappy (sorry, luxury) pouches it comes in dry out very fast so careful rehydration is required if you dont want Satan's breath on your tongue! This stuff is not terrible, but rather, unremarkable instead, therefore not really recommended as there is lots of much better smokes for a similar price. I'll give it two stars.

I should also note that as this is a supermarket staple i have smoked many, many pouches of this when nothing else was available (or I didnt know any better when i first started with the pipe 10 years ago). If your aromatically inclined then consider this a 3 star tobacco.

Later tins appear a bit stronger and better tobacco's. Upping to 3 stars.

I bought this due to the totally inadequate selection we have where I live. It is packaged and priced like supermarket tobacco, so I tried this with realistic (read low) expectations. The tobacco doesn't look or smell very exciting either, which kept my expectations low.

My first bowl was a disaster as I packed it too tightly. Tried it again, taking care to pack it loosely, and it worked! Packed loosely, this tobacco smokes very well. I found the flavour to be mild, slightly spicy. The taste is (pleasantly) peppery, with a little sweetness in the background. Quite enjoyable. It is quite "smokey" though, with a fair dose of nicotine. I tasted none of the advertised cocoa or chocolate (which is good, I suppose).

Not much room note, but quite pleasant. It also doesn't linger, and I can smokie it in my office, at work.

Packed loosely, this tobacco smokes easily and cleanly down to the bottom of the bowl.

Although nothing to get excited about, this is a good choice for a beginner, as it is not too strong to overwhelm, but not so weak that one would want to smoke it too quickly. It is also a good crossover for smokers wanting to try something sweet for the first time. A pretty neutral choice, then.

Nothing offensive here, so everyone will find something to like about this blend.

Revising this review -- after smoking another pouch: downgrade to 1 *, too much tongue burn for a Dutch Cavendish. Only real virtues are cheapness & availability.

I don't know how to describe the Amphora aroma - I can detect mint & chocolate, I think, but there is no obvious single note to me so I will just say - typical Amphora.

I was surprised, though, that with a name like "Full Aroma", the aroma/flavouring was much milder than I expected. No stickiness, room note pleasant & not overwhelming. A little too much Virginia for my personal taste -- I'm a Burley fan. Not as strong as Original Blend. Burns evenly, fairly fast & completely, except (for some reason) in my old Peterson, which leaves a dottle.

Note - the blend I am reviewing was purchased in Canada where it is manufactured under licence, so it could be slightly different from the original manufacturer's version.

I have smoked Amphora Red maybe a couple of times in my whole life of pipe smoker. This is the third, and now remember why A(R) is not in my recurring list: it's a mild and quite anonimous aromatic.

Nothing unpleasant, nor anything worth to get hooked on, also. Should I think to an every-day tobacco, my current go-to is elsewhere in the "regular" cathegory, not this one that also seems designed for the uninvolved pipe smoking. Basically, the fact is that I smell a pleasant complex mix of aromas over a weak tobacco base. So, the question is: why should I smoke this ?

Nevertheless, I must admit this is not the terrible garbage that H&H (the EU's one, I mean) is, nor a bad incendiary dutch as I experienced with Schipper's. Plus, several fellow pipsters like it, there must be a reason.

I will not finish the third pouch, I'm sure. Shall try to mix with something (maybe McConnell's Red Virginia, just to remain into the same colour...).

Sorry, this is maybe my worst review... Amphora Red has not helped my imagination that much.

I started smoking pipes years ago and predominantly I stuck to Amphora Original Blend and Captain Black White back then.

I have just finished a bowl of Amphora Full Aroma for the very first time and this blend is worthy of my review.

Blended under license for Van Nelle of Holland, this blend is just the right moisture in the pouch. In the pouch I pick up subtle hints of black licorice and perhaps chocolate.

Carefully packed, it lights easily and stays lit. I tried this in my meer-lined Butz Choquin. The smoke is dry and cool and mild with no tongue bite and stays that way until almost the end.

There was only slight gurgle but my moisture trap did collect some fluid which ended back in the bottom of the bowl making things bitter. I had to dump my bowl at that end point where the taste was bitter. The remnant was a fairly large dottle which burned to ashes in seconds in the ashtray. The aroma is just slightly sweet and floral but predominantly natural tobacco....no licorice aroma noticed in the room note at all.

The burley adds a nice body to the Virginias and rounds out the flavor just right and the Virginias offer that natural sweetness.

Left absolutely no aftertaste. This is a nice, mild all day smoke suitable for beginners and seasoned European-aromatic pipers.

Between All the Amphora offerings available today, this is hands-down my favorite which I will add to my rotation.

Too bad I cannot get this in the 200 gram can, like the Original Blend.

If you can get this, you should give it a try for sure.

When I ran out of Captain Black Royal - which I think is mediocre at best - I saw a pouch of this and decided to give it a try. It was either this or Captain Black again, so I went for this.

The smell right out of the pouch seemed to be pretty good, and I got a strong scent of Virginia tobacco, like with Drum rolling tobaccos. Like other reviewers, I didn't get much fruity notes upon smelling it. Smoking it, I got no fruitiness whatsoever.

What I like a lot about this tobacco is that it's extremely easy to pack and light, and keep lit. Another thing I absolutely love about it is that it requires absolutely no effort to keep smoking it. I found it great in my church warden while reading a book. Slow, small puffs and just forget about tampering etc, and just read. A really good experience.

I was expecting an aromatic, but quite frankly I got none, and I like aromatics. Captain Black Royal seems to be more aromatic than this. The taste is good, you can taste the tobacco, but it's just a bit on the dull side. Not very exciting, but that doesn't mean bad. It's basically just Virginia tobacco, slow burning, no tongue bite (another thing I appreciate it for) and decent flavor. After taste is kind of, well, dull, but all in all, for the price it's a good smoke.

Update : I had 3 bowls before writing this review. A few more now and I can't feel my tongue.. not exactly the best feeling in the world.

Unfortunately there is a limited gamut of pipe tobaccos in Greece, and this is the reason why I always order tobacco from abroad. Amphora is one of the 10 - 12 blends you may find in a Greek tobacco store and I shall agree completely with "takisg" (who, I guess comes also from Greece) concerning the Amphora Red. Though, tasteful and nicely flavoured with beautiful aroma has the same drawback as the majority of the imported tobaccos in Greece. It is moist enough and you have to get it dry first if you wish to avoid bites. (I recommend to put it in a grocer's paper bag for at least 2 days). Definitely one of the best tobaccos one can buy in Greece, when he is forced to choose among 10 – 12 blends…

A very good Cavendish tobacco if you take in consideration that it costs 6.90 euro per 50 gms pouch. Not a full aromatic. Cut in medium to fine width, not 100% rubbed out. The color is medium to light red-brown. When you open the pouch the aroma is a sort of cherry-chocolate,with a light natural tobacco sent. The body of this smoke its surprising for an aromatic. It is very smooth and cool-smoking,without a bite,no matter how hard you puff.It burns very well, dry and clean to a fine light gray ash. An excellent all day smoke. The room aroma while smoking is pleasant with mild notes of fruits and natural tobacco essences. Recommended for beginners and experienced smokers.

I tried this tobacco not expecting much. I had tried Amphora Brown years ago and didn't look back. Sitting beside Captain Black ( I can't stand) on the shelf I didn't have much hope for this one.

I opened the pouch and smelled - tobacco (esp virginia). The cut and texture is that of a quality tobacco. So far so good - no baking extracts.

This tobacco packs nicely since it is not overly moist in the pouch. It had just the right amount of moisture (no old stock around here - we have lots of Amphora in Canada).

I lit the bowl, tamped and lit again. A little burley nose burn and bright virginias - verly little casing. In the first third of the bowl you taste a little citrus and a little fruity but mostly just from the quality virginias. The pouch says it is flavoured to compliment the tobacco - just so. By mid bowl, sipping the smoke you taste chocolate. Gently cycled through the nose you get chocolate, berry and citrus - tastey and refreshing. By the end of the bowl you get more chocolate but the other flavours are still there. I was left with a little dottle - not too wet, and a nice ash. This is a full bodied smoke. If you smoke fast you get a nice virginia taste all the way through the bowl. Smoked slow it has as many subtleties as higher end tobaccos. I do not consider this tobacco to be in the same class with other drugstore tobaccos. I have a drawer full of high end brands that I enjoy but none has given me as much satisfaction for the money as this unique and expertly blended tobacco. It is just slightly aromatic in that the casings don't overpower the excellent quality virginias. As an OTC class I give it 4 stars. If you haven't tried it go and buy some.

A nice coincidence. Like Steden (previous reviewer) I also began smoking pipes 19 years ago and this was the first tobacco which I smoked. When I was a student, with small budget, I prefered to smoke Amphora full aroma almost daily. It was better then other cheap blends and very easy to find. It is a particular blend, with a cool and satisfying smoke. But can not be a real tobacco for a "natural" pipe smoke lover like me. It is very fruity for my taste. I'll surely smoke it also in the future but just for the memory of the old days.

This tobacco was, and still is, one of my"temporary" smokes, while waiting for good English tobacco to arrive in the mail. Upon opening the 50 gram pouch, I was met with a pleasant, but low-key aroma that seemed dry and unexciting. Filling a lightly packed bowl yielded a tolerable to satisfactory smoke. I found also this blend to have a heck of a "bite" to it if smoked 'hard'. Best smoked gently I think.

The current issue of this tobacco is not as good as the same label of 2-3 years ago. i.m.h.o.

Quality of leaf is mediocre, but after a few pipes, the subtle tobacco flavors do come through. Perhaps a good smoke for the beginning pipe smoker, not a bad "drug-store" tobacco at all.

Amphora Full Aroma was quite a surprise for me. I'm not fond of aromatics, and after reading the pouch description I thought I was gonna hate this one (I don't like raspeberries at all). Good thing I read it after I had bought the pouch, or I'd never have tried this fine tobacco.

This is a great quality cavendish that burns easily and doesn't bite at all. The tobacco taste is the main feature throughout the bowl, spiced by a subtle almond taste and hints of cocoa and orange. Lukily, I never tasted anything similar to raspberries or flowers.

Despite the name, this is a mild aromatic, almost borderline to natural tobacco.

I'll echo the comment about low nicotine content. I tend to smoke high-nicotine pipe tobacco (I actually self-medicate for migraines...tobacco is a cheaper and safer vasoconstrictor than tryptans!), but this is a readilly available product I'd recommend. The pouch aroma is extremely nice. I suspect it's largely golden virginia, or something and white burley. Fairly cool-burning.

Kinda new to the pipe smoking hobby. Finding tobacco locally is problematical, thus I'm trying the 'grocery store' offerings. Can't say I'm too impressed with this blend, but I reckon breaking in a new pipe probably has something to do with it. Certainly won't be giving up, particularly as the going price here for a 50gram pouch is darn near $22 Canadian. No kiddin'!

I'll get more 'eloquent' with my discriptive terminology as time goes one, but one thing I notice is how the tobacco makes my throat feel 'raspy' in very short order (even though I'm smoking it slowly & smoothly). I do like its aroma, though (room note?). That's a plus.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that for now and see how things go as time passes. Cheers, d'Pappy

I am very fortunate to be able to buy this blend from almost any corner store instead of having to buy from overseas.

When I smoke this tobacco I get dark chocolate, coco and raspberry flavour notes throughout the bowl. It is never over the top or sickly sweet as some other aromatics become and are. It's also not cloying to the palate and it does not bite at all. It smokes cool to the bottom of the bowl to a fine grey ash, tipping the ash half way through the smoke is recommended. I seem to be reaching for this tobacco all the time now bypassing others and I highly recommend it to all.

Not a full aromatic, by all means... Just a nice, clean, easy smoke. Elegant taste, but way too low on the nicotine level to satisfy me. Lights well, and smokes to the bottom with no maintenance needed. Burns very cool, even if puffed hard and smoked outdoors.

Perfect for a beginner smoker and for public crowded places, like sports events or similar, as it is very respectfull towards others.

Good quality, but only 2 stars strictly because its lack of strenght.

A very good tobacco to begin your pipe smoking adventure. From the moment you open the pouch and smell its flowery aroma, you will think that it is a very pleasant tobacco. And it is. Once you light it up, you will love its tasty flavor. The other thing that makes this tobacco nice is that, due to its cut, the burning time is considerably long, so you will enjoy this even longer. It has a fruity/flowery aroma but it also has some tobacco taste. Buy this one and you won't be disappointed. I am looking forward to buy a new pouch.

Back then I had of course rejected it completely because I was stuck to Captain Black. It brings nostalgia back! I could not spend a whole day smoking only that (we have become demanding smokers), but it is a good -not quality- solid tobacco with decent flavor, it does not burn the tongue, it is dry and in the end you can smoke it quite pleasantly if do not have any other tobacco. I liked it - it had a nice floral, mild fruity taste, and once in a great while I think I tasted some Orientals. I would buy this if it were still available. If you ever get a chance to buy a pouch, try it. I think most pipesters would like it.

This would be my favorite among Amphora, after the Special reserve Black Cavendish. But its quality over the later is that it is more consistent in the leaf size. Apparently, the pouch description says it contains oriental, but it must be in small quantity...

This is also a large cut broken flake, the pouch aroma is very pleasant - dried fruits and vanilla, and the bakkie is very nice, golden , light brown and medium brown leaves.

This is most probably the only Amphora that I still buy every once in a while - it's more available than the Black cavendish-, maybe once a year or so.

It tastes nice, it smokes nice and dry, and has a bit more taste than the regular Amphora. The room amora is appreciated by mostly everyone without any problem.

Not a tobacco for the beginner; you need a couple years of experience before switching to this one.

I eventually secured some from a duty-free shop on the internet from England. I almost wish I hadn't. This is not the same tobacco that was around in the 70s. It has its moments, but I can only tolerate it in certain pipes: mostly the pipes that I smoked it in during the 70s.

It is still one of the few aromatics that I smoke along with a couple of Browns offerings such as Vegas 64, Brown's Vanilla and Planta Vanilla Flake.

Amphora was my father's choice and my godfather's choice when I was just a toddler. Way back when, I was thrilled by the room note.

Understandably, 20 years ago when I first picked up the pipe smoking habit, this was my first choice. My impression at the time was that all was fine but a stale room note would develop if you did not ventilate your area sufficiently after smoking.

Since then I stayed off pipe smoking for an extensive interval until I picked it up again. Now, my considerations are different.

I tried Amphora (Red) again and I felt something was missing. True, I did not find this pronounced "stale odor" any more. But, at the same time I did not get any enthusiastic remarks about room note.

This blend burns quite hot and it tends to scorch my tongue. After the first pouch I thought of never buying Amphora red again. For old times sake, and being somewhat swayed by the reviews here, I did buy another one. If I ever buy another one this will be just because I will have no other choice... (I Agree with the reviewers who say that this is good quality tobacco - way above the usual drugstore OTC blends, I just think that one can do much better.)

A reviewer mentions that one might go full circle and end up with Amphora red again. I doubt it. If you can afford the extra cost you should try other Blends, Mac Baren's Golden Ambrossia for example.

Got this from a Friend, and boy am I in trouble....Cause I like it. I like it alot. A good flavorful blend- boasts virginias, orientals and burlies on the package. I can see that. Open the pouch and you get a great sent of Chocolate (Mark this, I don't normally like sweet aromatics) and what may be fruit- But more like a Chianti than fruity tooty if you know what I mean. Burn is clean- so far smoked in a cob and a falcon- slight nip in the begining, but that stopped. Settled into a nice Chianti tobacco flavor. I can see why this was so popular, but not why they stopped shipping to the US. Lucky I have friends over in the EU. It is in fact a better quality Drug Store type tobacco, Yes, I will smoke it when I can. I think the Nostalgia is mostly due to lack of availibility in the US (due to the litigious nature of americans and fear of legal issues for Imperial) I would smoke it as a mild, treat if it were handy. I will not bother to order it from Europe for what it is. For a somewhat similar, but not equal quality pouch style, I would pick Sail, Troost, or House of Windsor.

The Amphora and Mac Baren range ot tobaccos is what I cut my aromatic teeth on, so to speak. Though I have moved away from aromatics, frequently I am gifted some by kindly but non-smoking friends who ask the shop assisstant for the most popular tobacco. So I have a cache of Amphoras, Mac Barens, Larsens and Captain Blacks. To some extent the enjoyment of Amphora Red is due to nostalgia. (Unaffected by nostalgia, Captain Blacks are practically unsmokeable for me.) But over the years I have come to have high regard for this tobacco. The basic tobaccos are of high quality and the taste does not cloy. I am lucky in that the SO likes the smell of burning latakia: but Amphora pleases her as well. Anyone wanting to explore the world of aromatics could do worse than beginning with this blend. He could just find himself coming full circle.

Hot and dry, even when newly opened was always my impression of Amphora Red, but it was easily available in almost any newsagents when I was a student in London in the mid-seventies. It always disappointed me, but was better than the awful Clan, and less biting than Holland House. Knowing what I now know I think HH could have been a great tobacco if I'd known then how to smoke it. At least Amphora Red doesn't have such heavy casings that are thick and syrupy like some aromatics. It, Sail and Capt. Black are still available in these puritan days in the rural Canadian village where I now live, but I never buy any of them. Aromatic smokers stick to their favourite concoctions because they fear the strength of english mixtures - at least, I did for many years. Anyone who smokes Amphora, should know there are far better, milder, less hot and more tasty english-style tobaccos out there waiting to be tried.

There are many, many good aromatics out there, and since smoking does actually kill you, you may as well smoke something worth dieing for. This is one that should be left on the shelf - think drum tobacco smoked in a pipe.

Sorry to all those that enjoyed it, this is one of the only tobaccos sold in New Zealand, and we are definately the worse for it.

I got given a pouch of this for my birthday (phew) and it is a nice smoke. While not something I would class as a contemplative smoke after a hard day's work/study, it would make a good 'all-day' mid-afternoon-tea smoke which will not knock you for six as the nicotine content is rather mild, but satisfy oneself until an after dinner smoke perhaps. In any case, the pouch aroma is very pleasant but not overwhelmingly so as with some other aromatics, but I decided, as a prudent pipe smoker should, to smoke it in my trusty cob. The first few bowls I tried not rubbing out the tobacco which is very light in colour and was sorely (literally as my tongue was fried) disappointed-I got nothing out of the bowl apart from tongue bite and an acrid, unpleasant smoke. But by golly how things change! When some reviews talked about flavour changing with the consistency of the tobacco I thought they were joking, but after personal experience I can vouch for it!I would advise rubbing out. This blend is extremely 'easy' sometimes only one light is needed with perhaps one relight throughout the entire bowl, which makes this blend good while doing something else like reading a book outside in the sun or for you older chaps gardening:) The first few puffs reveal little in the way of taste apart from the flowery casing, but the smoke smells delicious which is unfortunate as I sometimes am tempted to inhale through the nose. Mid-bowl the flowery aroma fades and the tobacco flavour comes to the fore with the casing in the background-a very nice combination. I for one prefer the mid bowl and like many other tobaccos this one changes throughout from beginning to end each nice in its own way, although near the end there is a slight gurgle. The smoke is not very thick but whitish, and there is a fine white ash left after the smoke so I do not think this would be good for breaking in a new pipe as the cake buildup is not great. Be that as it may, it's a pity you yanks cannot get a hold of this stuff anymore because it is very enjoyable as a relaxing, none too heavy smoke. I give it 3 stars out of 5.

Boy, did cracking the pouch of Amphora Red bring back a flood of memories! I had regained my youth: My muscles no longer ached, I had (more) hair and I had all my teeth?????..and they were ALL good! I hadn?t seen or smoked this blend for decades. As it is no longer available in the U.S., I ordered some from an overseas mail order firm in Cyprus ($20.99 for 7 pouches including shipping ? 5 week delivery). This tobacco has one of the most delightful pouch aromas I have encountered: sweet and fruity but not overpowering. This is what I remember most about this tobacco. It almost smells good enough to eat. While I did smoke this blend in the past, I more often smoked Amphora Brown. I also had the bad habit of repeatedly calling this stuff AMORPHA, not Amphora, that resulted in a lot of kidding by my co-workers, several of whom smoked Amphora Brown. This was in the late 1960s. In our group of about 20, there were 6 of us who smoked a pipe. It was these other guys who got me hooked on pipe smoking.

But to get to the point, this is a great aromatic with a flavor that is definitely akin to its pouch aroma. Unlike many aromatics, it doesn?t leave goopey residue in the bowl. I did notice, however, that the flavor dissipates somewhat towards the bottom of the bowl but its burning qualities are good. (I like to shred most cavendish blends a bit.) I do not smoke aromatics on a regular basis but I haven?t abandoned them either. If you want a quality aromatic of the Dutch variety, try AMORPHA Red (or is that Amphora Red). A delightful, flavorful and relaxing smoke to be sure!

I rate this tobacco 9.8 out of 10.

It is the second time that I try an Amphora tobacco (first was with Vintage Malt Whiskey), and it is the second time I get disappointed. This tobacco seems to be a popular choice, one of the most widespread aromatic cavendishes here in Italy: I thought it might be good, so why not give it a try? Well, it is not bad, I just find it a bit boring. Upon opening, the pouch has a wonderful smell of vanilla, orange flowers and the like. The cut is fine, making it child's play to light and keep lit: alas, it burns a bit too hot and wet for my taste. Tongue bite is not excessive, but the smoke is rather harsh in the mouth. And what about the taste? The first bowls I had were rather sweet and with hints of citrus aroma. Not my favorite kind of aroma (I like Latakia!), but not bad at all. When I got used to it, after a few days, all the faults started to come out: the aroma vanishes in the second half of the bowl (typical of this kind of aromatics...), leaving with one of the dullest tobaccos I have ever tried. The room aroma is very sweet, vanilla-like, very "kind" to non-smokers... Well, I'd rather smoke some TRUE tobaccos on the balcony rather than smoking this bland stuff indoors just because it pleases the other people... As a conclusion: I have nothing against Amphora, and this Full Aroma is probably one of their best blends... but I'd rather stick to more exciting stuff. If I want to smoke something that is flower/fruit flavored, I'll keep using my narghile with the delicious Egyptian molasses tobaccos made by Nakhla!

After several years of absence, I bought again a packet of Amphora Red, just to remember how it was like. And besides the fact that it is a great, well "mixed" tobacco, I find it a bit wet for everyday smoke. No tongue bite, easy, slow burning, a very decent and pleasant smoke,on occasion.

I haven't meet any pipe smoker who haven't tried Amphora before. There is a reason why I suppose. Cause the packaging looks good? Maybe because it is like a ready rubbed quality flake? Too bad I am not the mood for virginia these days. If so this would be pretty cool. It is made of good quality aged Vs. All the flavoring of this mixture intentional brings out the Vs with no other agenda. The casing is pretty heavy but never over powering the main course. Like the casing in all quality aromatic, you can't laid your finger on it...cherry?...raisins? Spring flowers?...oranges?...it changes with the burning temp and the course of the bowl....but in every changes you are still very focus on the Vs. A fine dish it is if you are a V lover...and like all good Vs...beware of the hidden strength

October-2003. Well at least Amphora Red is still consistant as always when I picked up a pouch recently while on a fishing trip. I still say its one of the best pouch aromatic tobaccos around, which is still easily obtainable.I also enjoyed the change of pace. The quality in Amphora Red by far out-weighs many other sweet sickly smokes,no goop here. This aromatic gets 8 out of 10.

The other day when I was out on a beer run, I decided to check out the liquor store's smoke shop, just to see what the pickins were like. I just about yelped when I saw a pack of Amphora Red sitting on the shelf smiling at me, since I understand this is no longer imported to the U.S. I looked at the price, which was 99 cents, and I suspected that it was a leftover from the old days. I thought, "oh, heck, it's only a buck!" and quickly snatched it up. When I got home, the tobacco seemed a little dry, but I thought I'd still give it a whirl. It turned out to be one of the best smokes of the week.

A classic one-match light, I immediately noticed the delicious aroma. It smelled of fruit and blossoms, just like the package promised. About half-way down, a slightly stronger favor developes. Others have identified it as raisins, which I agree with, but there's also a little cinnamon in there. Towards the end, the taste of natural tobacco comes to the fore.

This was a great back porch smoke. I can't think of any better way to enjoy the sunset.

Once readily available at drugstores and supermarkets all across America, this surprisingly high-quality Dutch blend is no longer sold in the U.S. Pouches still occasionally pop up from time to time and one can still mail order it from online shops outside the United States. I had expected yet another sticky black Cavendish to lurk within the attractive red pouch, but instead was greeted with a nice dark brown mixture containing quite a bit of broken flake. The pouch aroma is very heavy with a sweet chocolate cherry essence mixed with natural tobacco. I like to break up the mixture a bit as I am a slow puffer, but faster smokers should pack it as is. The room aroma is an extremely pleasant and refreshing blend of natural tobacco (I suspect mainly burley with some Virginia), the fruity citrus essence, and the musty chocolate essence. This aroma disperses very quickly after smoking. The flavor is predominantly one of light burley with the chocolate flavor lurking in the background and the citrus flavor providing a bit of perkiness. It is pleasantly sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. The burley provides a solid medium nicotine strength. While I only smoke this occasionally, I enjoy it immensely every time I do and typically wonder why I don't smoke it more often. It is especially nice during warm weather. I find it very easy to light and keep lit all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Amphora Full Aroma is not to be confused with Amphora Regular which comes in a brown pouch. While somewhat similar, I find Amphora Regular to be the most bland tobacco I have ever tried. Available from Synjeco, Switzerland.

This is a very tasty weed in the same vein as skandinivak(sp?) and Mixture. I find it to be a good all day tobacco when I want a lighter cavedish with a little spice to it. It is ashame that I had to order it from Synjeco in Switzerland or I would smoke it more often. I love the intermingling of citrus and berry. It can bite but is an easy beast to master. I find myself craving this quite often and nothing else will do.

This was my favorite aromatic. Kentucky, burley, virginia, and oriental. The kentucky is what gave this blend it's nicotine punch. I loved it! But you can't get it in the USA no more. I found a can of this in a corner Philadelphia cigarette shop about a year ago when nobody else had it. I felt like I just found a diamond in a coal mine. It is a blend to be smoked slow because it had a tendancy to get hot due to the virginia and the flavoring. Fruit Whiff is how the flavoring is described. It's kind of like cherry mixed with roses but it wasn't syrupy. It could also get kind of wet if smoked too fast but there is so much nicotine here in this blend I would sometimes get the hiccups. If you like sweet and high nicotine punch this is your tobacco.

This is the only ?industrial? tobacco that can be (sometimes) part of my tobacco collection. The first time I tried it (I obtained it from a corner shop after midnight?) I was surprised by the quality and the appealing aroma. Perhaps this first impression was a result of my poor expectations but later I discovered that I was enjoying it even though I usually smoke either English style tobaccos or VA/Perique ones. It is medium-to-fine cut and its colour ranges from golden-brown to reddish-brown. The pouch aroma is fruity (cherry and grapes/raisin). It packs easily; it smokes cool but wet and stays lit very easily. The fruity (citrus fruits) aroma and flavour remains during smoke (there is also a light chocolate flavour in the background) but it disappears after having finished half bowl. The flavour becomes worst as smoke is progressing towards the bottom of the pipe. Its strength is light-to-medium, while its aroma is medium-to-strong. The room aroma is pleasant but almost overwhelming. It is accepted by other smokers but not so by non-smokers colleagues at work. All in all Amphora Full Aroma is ?possibly recommended? especially when you are out of tobacco and the only source is a corner shop or even a gas station.

I remember this well because, when I was first starting out with Grabows and Bic lighters, I got 5 pouches of this to entertain myself with.

It's pretty good for a drugstore tobacco, just don't expect much from it. I wouldn't smoke this unless I ran out of my normal aromatics.

As it is, it's a rather pedestrian blend, but it has good raisin notes and a fairly stable tobacco base. You could do a lot worse than this with some premium-named tobaccos.

Give it a try. Even if it's not to your liking, it's not a huge waste of money. Good value, in my opinion.

I'd already smoked a pouch of this, and found it to be a nice, not so commercial, aromatic expedition; not to wet or hot, though lacking ... something. One day, an uncle of mine, knowing of my pipe habits, gave my the remains of his pipe period (certainsly no more then a day or two, as he is a fallower of the strictest cigarret habits): an spitfire bent billiard pipe and a pouch of Amphora Aromatic, an old one, nothing similar to the thing I had - nearly no smell over the creamy cavendish. SURPRISING! I still have that one and ocasionaly by a new one, just for old time sake.

Seeing two new reviews of Amphora put me in a frame of mind to recommend the red pouch, "full aroma". This is a quality aromatic weed, very mild, but with a totally inoffensive flavouring and quite a bit of broken virginia flake in the pouch. I don't think it's available in the states any longer, but in Canada it's one of the cheaper weeds going, and well worth a try. This tobacco is totally undeserving of its "drugstore" rep, but the same cannot be said of other Amphoras (esp Brown). Though too mild for my needs on a regular basis, totally recommended for new smokers (WAY better than Capn Black, just as easy to smoke). I try to never leave the house without enough quality weed on me to sustain me through any calamity, but if in a pinch, it's good to know Amphora Red is there for me if I need her.

The tobacco was a little dry mainly due to the age of the pouch. Refer to my review of Skan Full Aroma as this is very very similar.

I got this unsolicited on a trade. Being an admitted drugstore-tobacco snob, I didn't smoke this for a while. On one of those what-the-heck days, I gave it a shot.

Hey, not bad. I didn't have the flavor descriptors, so I didn't know what to expect. I didn't pick out any particular flavorings, and I wouldn't have known that it WAS flavored except for the "aroma" in the name. Maybe this is because my sample was older and pretty dry. It smoked easily, pleasantly, with a decent flavor level. Not complex, but a comfortable, no-brainer smoke. I now keep the pouch in the trunk of my car in case I have a smoking opportunity.

This tobacco can be summed up in one word - easy! Upon opening the pouch you have to have a good strong sniff to get the full aroma, which is fruity and very pleasant if quite mild. The texture is fine and very light brown in colour, not like your typical cavendish blend.

It lights very easy and is easy to keep going, you can puff away quite hard, yet it still burns cool. The flavouring is hard to pin down, the main flavour is definately fruity, I would say honeysuckle. However there are additional flavours which I can only describe as possibly herbal. However the odd thing I find about this tobacco is that the flavour wears off after approximately 1/3 of the bowl, after that it becomes quite flavourless but still very easy to smoke. It leaves a fine ash which doesn't flavour the pipe too much.

I would describe this as a geat beginners tobacco or maybe a good bedtime smoke, due to it's mild but pleasant flavouring. It is not an adventurous tobacco, so you could get bored with it if you smoked it too much. The quality of this tobacco belies it's mass produced manufacture.

For many years, Amphora Red was my standard working tobacco (that is, the tobacco I always smoked whenever I was working in circumstances that allowed me to smoke.) Although often mocked as a "drugstore" blend, Amphora Red is actually a very high quality Dutch cavendish with an excellent cut and wonderful smoking qualities. It is quite aromatic in both taste and smell, at least through the first half of the bowl, and tastes of both cherry and chocolate flavoring in a way that is not at all like the "cough syrup" taste of most drugstore aromatics. In the second half of the bowl, the blend loses most of its flavoring and reverts to a pleasant, mild tobacco taste. I stopped smoking this when it became unavailable in the States, but I used to smoke it by the pound, and would still smoke it, especially during the hot Texas summer, if it was easily available. All in all, this is by far the best "drugstore" blend I ever smoked, and a blend that compares well to any of the premium aromatics I've smoked.

Overview: Amphora Full Aromatic comes in red 50g pouch. A product of the Netherlands, Amphora blends are available everywhere I've traveled. Sight & Touch: Reddish to golden brown in color, this Cavendish has the coarse shred & small flakes typical of Amphora products. Occasionally, new pouches are a little moist, but a little airing and mixing dries it enough to meet my needs without impairing flavour or aroma. Smoking Characteristics: Amphora smokes well without rubbing, just as it comes from the pouch. It's a '1 match' blend that is easy to keep lit with slow, moderately paced draws of light strength. I like it in any pipe ? strait or bent -- and smoke it with equal enjoyment indoors or out.

Nose: Upon opening a new pouch, your nose is greeted with strong, fruity aromas that have faint traces of vanilla & licorice floating around. Although the aroma is strong, there is no ?cough drop? scent that plagues other blends. The initial room note is pleasantly fruity and of medium weight. Unfortunately, it descends too quickly into a staleness I associate with many Burley & Virginia blends.

Mouth: The initial flavour is fruity with pleasant undertones of natural tobacco. This changes a wee bit half way down the bowl into a stronger and darker flavor that is still moderately cool to the mouth and tongue.

Economics: In Canada this blend is low-priced and, coupled with its moderately slow rate of burn, is an economical smoke.

Last Words: Amphora Full Aroma is a wonderful change from Lane, Middleton & Sail products that festoon most corner stores. Out of the 'corner store' blends available to me, Amphora Full Aroma is my 2nd favourite. I rate it at 3 stars out of 5 and usually have it in my tobacco cabinet.

If you normally eschew “drugstore” brands this is one that might win you over. You can find this stuff at various European convenience stores and magazine stands and it actually doesn’t taste like hot air. Definitely Burley-forward in its taste (lots of chocolate and maybe vanilla). Non-smokers say the room note is pleasant. Burns just any typical MacBaren tobacco so dry it out well, puff slowly, and be prepared for a lot of moisture upon combustion. Goes great with coffee and it’s mild enough to be a good morning smoke despite it being called a “full” blend. Burns nicely once dried with a typical (for me) number of relights. I would purchase this again.

So, as you do, I took advantage of duty free allowance on my recent holiday and found a real bargain on the shelves of a tobacco and liquor store in Lanzarote. Amphora Red for a mere £4.50 per 50gm pouch. I last tried this blend when I was about 20 years old a scant 41 years ago. It was made in Holland back then and is now produced by MacBaren in Denmark. I am very happy to report that it is as I remember it. Upon opening the pouch, I was met by what I would describe as a very pleasant aroma that takes me back to my childhood, when sweets and tobacco were sold side by side in every b&m and the subtle mix of chocolate and fruit made for a truely hypnotic experience. The tobacco was slightly dry, but I rehumidified it a little and it is now at perfect moisture. The cut is an exemplary Dutch Cavendish and after a very slight rub, was easy to fill, using the palm swirl method and topping off with some kindling of finer bits. This is a combination of fine leaf including Virginia, Burley, Oriental and Dark Fired. Each plays a part in the pleasure that is found on lighting up. Unusually for an aromatic, flavour and room note are as expected from the pouch note. Sweet and savory and full of character. I am not normally seduced by the dubious delights of Aromatics but this is no OTC drugstore blend. No gloopy mess in this mix, and no tongue bite, but instead a wonderful flavour that follows all the way down the bowl to fine ash and no dottle. I paired it with a cup of Earl Grey with Vanilla and the combination really works well. Fair play to MacBaren for re-creating the Recipe faithfully, which isn't always the case. A solid 4 star performance and a very happy customer.

Addendum :- I needn't have bothered re-hydrating the tobacco, as I have subsequently found it to smoke better on the dry side. (Less tendency to bite).

The notes in the pouch are primarily of berries, some strawberry, some dark fruits. They don't jump out like strong aromatics, but are very light.

The smoke itself brings some of the same notes with a bit of grass and citrus from the Virginia and just a hint of cocoa and earth from the Burley tobacco.

As I like to do with other Amphora blends, I rub out the broken flakes as much as I can and let them dry for about an hour plus the time that they dry while being in the pouch. Once that happens, it smokes cooler than fresh, has less chance of tongue bite, and requires less relights without losing flavor. Otherwise, it smokes a little hot. Moderate-slow smoking pace. Loses just a bit of flavor towards the end of the bowl, but overall maintains the same flavor. Can be easily an all-day smoke.

Mild in strength and body. Perfectly balanced.

To sum up, I think that it's an excellent blend full of good flavor, easy to smoke, and has a good room note. In line with Amphora Virginia, Mac Baren did an amazing job here. As an evidence, I smoked this exclusively and didn't miss anything else. Easy perfect score.

The key players here are the burleys and Kentucky that give this a very woody and nutty flavour. This compliments the chocolate casing very well. Secondary players are the Virginias and orange flavour that offer a nice citrus garnish to the chocolate. The Orientals are hard to detect, but gives an orange blossom note if searched for. This is a classic drug store pouch, and is well loved in Europe. It does have some bite if you attempt to use it as an all day smoke. It is better as an after dinner smoke as it offers a solid nic hit.

This is not my favorite chocolate based blend, but it is a great one. The tobaccos are not lost in a sea of aromatic casing, but instead are elevated by the thoughtful pairings that compliment the base flavours of each varietal.

This blend is the one on the Belgian pipe tobacco market I would rank as 4 stars. The thing is almost all pipe tobacco blends in Belgium are based on virginia which is absolutely not compatible with my mouth chemistry. This one contains virginia too but surprisingly it doesn't bite at all. Also, it is from MacBaren and all their blends are like a blowtorch for me. I like it because as I said no biting, nice slightly sweet taste which I don't get tired of, the burning time is around 25-30 minutes, it doesn't give a lot of moisture, and finally, it has an affordable price. The freshly opened pack can give a little bit of licorice taste but it disappears in a couple of days. The flavor is rich and with chocolate and fruit notes, completely opposite to Amphora's original. Tobacco gives nice and thick smoke and doesn't need to relight, maybe 1-2 times if it is not puffed regularly. It gives cool smoke and has the perfect moisture in a pack. When I smoke before going to bed I don't have an unpleasant taste the next day morning. So, it is a perfect blend for me.

Only the second OTC tobacco I have tried the first being captain black white label I do like it and I will definitely use it with my meerschaum pipe maybe the best smoke I’ve had with that

A parte il Virginia e il Black Cavendish non sono un amante degli Amphora ed ecco uno dei motivi: un tabacco povero, cioccolatoso e stucchevole. C'è di peggio ma c'è anche mooolto di meglio in circolazione.

Mild Mild Very Full Tolerable

One of the worst blends I ever smoked! The first few puffs are great...spicy, with the Kentucky making it´s mark. No topping detectable...after that it´s going all done! A few puffs later I got the foul taste of old chewing gum in my mouth wich lasted until the end of the smoke. Disgusting and not recomened at all!

An easily available, cheap tobacco.

Nice, enjoyable pouch-note that, by the way, I didn’t found in the bowl. The topping is not excessive, I’d say just right. The full character may lay in the Kentucky component in the blend, which is quite detectable both by sight and by taste.

Nice fine cut, easy to pack, light and keep lit. Classical one-match-and-forget. Best savoured if you try to find the balance around the kindling temperature, otherwise it bites quite often.

Distinct room note, but nothing special or particularly enjoyable.

Cheers Everyone, Brandr ODS

Amphora-As the name testifies-"Am for another tobacco". This comes across as a smooth tasting (floral notes) and mild aromatic. However you'll soon find out that it leaves the tongue nipped and the pallatte a little worn out. Nothing worse in a pipe tobacco than having to wait as a result of tough treatement for the next pipe!
