Orlik Tobacco Company A/S Golden Sliced (Red Tin)
(3.33)
A blend of golden, fully ripe Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States and a smidgen of perique. Natural sweetness and freshness with hints of citrus.
Notes: Previous edits to this blend have averred that a dispute exists whether or not Golden Sliced contains perique. It does. Please note that the website stglanepipe.com states on its Orlik page that certain of its blends (including Golden Sliced) contain "fully ripe Virginia and a little perique." Moderator.

Got this as a sampler and kinda dismissed it at first as Virginias are not really my favourite but on sampling a couple of bowls have ordered a couple of tins to add to my rotation...great smoke with plenty of flavour to it and enough going on in the mouth to keep you interested. Personally gives me that full feeling I get with a burley and I know there's a burley / Perique discussion going on but I'm not getting involved with that...what I know is that it's a satisfying smoke that delivers a nice tingle to the mouth and a pleasant light "hay-ish" style taste which lights and smokes great straight from the box. 2nd tin opened and doesn’t dissapoint

What can I say that hasn't already been said? It's a good all-around VA flake. I have smoked Dunhill Flake for a long time, so it was pretty much the "standard" by which I judge VA flakes. First of all, the tin note is just like fresh cut hay. I really like the fact that the slices are much thinner than other flakes. They pack much easier and don't break apart as much. It burns evenly and holds a flame. The flavor is sweet, tangy, citrus...It's what a good VA is suppose to be. Honestly, I don't get even a hint of Perique. All in all, a good summertime smoke to me.

Golden Sliced is the first Orlik tobacco I've tasted. I'd say that this company is a good producer of tobaccos, so don't dismiss anything I say as negative.
Overall, I can see that Golden Sliced is a good tobacco of moderate to fairly-strong character. It is, I have to say, a good Virginia-Perique blend. And while enjoyable, my personal tastes would lead me to not smoke it in the future. It is rather dry and sharp on the palate, more so because of the balance of Virginias in it rather than an overabundance of Perique.
Still, I can see why many would rely on this as their VaPer blend, and at a very reasonable price. It's my own subjectivity which would have me seeking to blend my own VaPer rather than buying Orlik's, and I neither regret nor reject this blend as being enjoyable for the most part.

Smoked this for the first time today. It is medium to strong and can be quite strong if smoked 'fast and furious'. Without prejudice to what some reviews have stated, it certainly contains Perique - not just a hint of Perique but a fair amount. Unless of course my taste buds got it all wrong.

I am usually very suspicious with all the Danish blends (I hate aromatics), but Golden Sliced is OK. The tin note is somewhat reminiscent of Erinmore with a topping that smells like orange peel. The flake presentation is one of the best I have ever seen. This is coil tobacco and it breaks down in thick leather like ribbons when you pull the whole thing apart. In my personal opinion this is very suggestive and an invitation to have a sit-down and explore. The strength of this tobacco is rather mild and the topping is only slightly detected in your smoke. I would have expected a stronger tobacco in this respect, but I guess this is what it is. I am finding this tobacco very similar to things like Capstan or Dunhill Flake, but the topping will set it apart. I'd be surprised if this tobacco surprised the more experienced smoker, but that is not to say this is not a good baccy or that it should avoided at all cost. I don't think I will buy it again, but I've nor reasons to reject it either.

This blend is Virginia with a tad of Burley and Perique . It has ln taste and aroma a natural sweetnesss in a navy flake cut into slices. It is not my one of my daily smokes but it deserves a spot in my rotation and I have some on hand at all times. As the picture on the can implies I judge it to be worthy of 3 stars. Try it an d see, I believe you will agree. hoo-boy

Orlik golden sliced is a great flake tobacco. I have been working my way through a tin of this and it really is a solid virgnia perique flake. This blend is really a sweet Virginia taste and the perique isn't really noticeable to me. I do enjoy the spice of perique and I feel golden sliced does lack that. Overall I would recommend this blend because it is a classic as well as a very good virgnia flake. The strength department I would say this is mild, there is no flavoring added to this tobacco, the taste is medium, the room note is pleasant to tolerable.

In this review I refer to the round 100-g-tin available in Germany, which contains a single long strip of mottled light brown flake tobacco.
The tin note reminds me of aniseed or licorice with hints of citrus fruits and hay.
You need to tear or cut off a piece of tobacco about twice as long as the the chamber of the bowl is deep and use the fold and stuff method for filling your pipe. Alternatively, you might rub it out, which is what the manufacturer advises. It can be a little difficult to put the charring light evenly to the tobacco. Afterwards I level out the ashes before the true light.
Being a Virginia based blend, Orlik Golden Sliced needs to be smoked gently and coolly or it will bite your tongue. There's not much anissed flavor in the taste, but rather grassy notes and maybe the aroma of rye bread, which both mix nicely with fruity hints of orange zest. It's a balanced smoked that starts out mellow and tends to get stronger as the bowl progresses. At the end there will be some greying ash.
The room note is pleasant with some fruity sweetness.

Straight from the tin I found the flakes folded nicely into the bowl and were easy to put under the flame. At first I felt slightly underwhelmed with this tobacco, thinking it was very similar to many of the other Virginia flakes I smoke but as it got going the perique started to come through and the tobacco became deliciously creamy. I could detect a citrus like flavour and a tangyness, which I suppose comes from the perique. It's a good tobacco...not strong enough to become one of my faves but nonetheless one I will likely use regularly.

Tin note is nice. Smells like fresh hay with a touch of honey/apricot/molasses. Not overly sweet smelling, just a hint of something there.
Rubbed out one flake, let it air dry for ten or fifteen minutes, before packing into my Savinelli. One char light, light tamp, brief touch of the flame, and smoked all the way through, with only one more quick touch from my lighter about two thirds of the way through.
Nice medium-light smoke. To my inexperienced palate, I taste mostly straight Virginia, with a hint of spiciness, and a hint of sweetness. Smoked cool and smooth the whole way through the bowl.
Nice, but didn't blow me away. I'll definitely revisit it at some point. For the time being, rating it a three out of four, nothing wrong with this one, but wasn't outstanding for me either.
