Orlik Tobacco Company A/S Golden Sliced (Red Tin)
(3.33)
A blend of golden, fully ripe Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States and a smidgen of perique. Natural sweetness and freshness with hints of citrus.
Notes: Previous edits to this blend have averred that a dispute exists whether or not Golden Sliced contains perique. It does. Please note that the website stglanepipe.com states on its Orlik page that certain of its blends (including Golden Sliced) contain "fully ripe Virginia and a little perique." Moderator.

This is a true and decent tobacco! Despite its form, it burns very easily and dry to the end. Mellow taste and honey-like aroma (but almost unnoticeable...) I recommend this one to those who smoke aromatics as a pleasant alternative to the everyday smoking and as a “bridge” to the English-tobacco smokers that leads to the tasteful world of aromatics…

Great looking tin for what that's worth. Fire engine red with a "shrewd judge" on the front. Elegant golden foil within, sealed with an Orlik "shrewd judge" sticker. 2 stacks of, well, "golden slices" inside. Beautiful golden flakes that look good enough to eat. This is my favorite VA flake. I like it slightly more than SG Full Virginia Flake, but both are great examples of the style. It's a naturally sweet VA flake that is not extreme in any way, but still very pleasing and delicious in a simple straight-forward kind of way. Moisture content is nearly perfect straight from the tin (some drying time doesn't hurt though), and it rubs out easily. Bought this tin from Iwan Ries and several staff members mentioned it as one of their favorites. I've smoked several bowls of it now, but I smoked a bowl of it just last night in a brand new unsmoked Peterson 999 and it was a damn near perfect smoking experience. Burns down to ash, minimal wetness/moisture left behind in the pipe. 1 flake rubbed out filled the bowl perfectly to the brim, and actually left a nice amount of cake behind (which I've never experienced before from just a single bowl in a brand new pipe). Good to the last drop. This will be a regular in my rotation.

I'll keep this review simple and just list my thoughts on this tobacco that I discovered early in my pipe smoking adventures.
- Handsome red and yellow tin ("Smoked by all shrewd judges" printed on the inside - a sense of humor is never a bad thing!) - Elegant gold foil wrapped tobacco pressed into 1/16" sheets consisting mainly of dark brown and golden VA tobacco with intermittent flecks of white. - A sweet aroma in the tin, reminiscent of raisins. Yes, a slight hint of citrus. - Burns extremely cool - Produces copious amounts of rolling white smoke when burnt - Almost no flavor - Room note is barely noticable
I think this tobacco is very nice but won't really blow your mind because it has little personality of it's own. Would be an ideal tobacco for blending into harsher mixtures... Would be great for cooling a hot blend as well.
Good stuff. I recommend it as a blender. May be good on it's own after some aging.

This dark flake tobacco, lined with intermittent light stripes, came in a nice 50g tin and was presented in evenly sliced flakes that were at the perfect humidity for smoking immediately...so that's what I did. This packed easily after rubbing out and produced a good volume of smoke. The aroma was very pleasant; lightly sweet and grassy then it changed more nutty-sweet after the first 1/3 of the bowl. There was a slight bite to this but mostly at initial light up.
Unfortunately, this tobacco failed my senses when it came to taste, it had an odd perfume flavor, floral, almost like roses that lingered for half of the pipe. It was reminiscent of SG's Bracken flake but not nearly as strong. I might be able to like this with time...will have to see. This would have gotten a 4 star rating, but at this point I just can't assign it due to the odd perfume.
*Eulenburg states (6th review from the bottom) that this flake is for simple country folk to enjoy...why is that I wonder? Do "simple" country folk share some characteristics of palate that I am not aware of? Is this a pejorative statement? If so, it has no place on this board and Eulenburg should know better.
**Update** I have moved to liking the GS purfume and this is a 3 star smoke in my book!

This is a very excellent smoke It burns evenly and continuously. Just a slight bite in the begining.
I have just bought this tobacco and can't wait to try them. The tast of this tobacco is very plesent with a strong nutty tast. Perfect for the winter. There is a slight bitter tast in your mouth at the end. I highly recommended if you like pure tobacco/virginias.
Overall, This is an excellent pure tobacco tast and will definately keep it in my rotation.

I'm inclined to agree with the reviewers who tasted a touch of perique (or some kind of pseudo-perique) in this. It reminds me of Reiner's Long Golden Flake (another slightly sweetened Danish va/per) but it's definitely rougher around the edges and $25 cheaper per 100g. I bought this because the shop was out of bulk Best Brown Flake and I was bummed all the way home, but I think it's a good blend. Will update when tin is finished.

A nice VA with no bite. All in all one can not go wrong with this tobacco. I like it. Get a tin or two and take your time to find the highs and lows as you work your way down the bowl.

Orlik is the only other Kake I have smoked other than Butera Kingfisher. I want to get another tin of this however there are many tobaccos I want to try and this might be high on my list to obtain again but it still takes a back seat to other blends. I smoked this when I was very new to non-drugstore brands almost a year ago. So to give a proper review I'll have to wait til I get more. Non the less I still recommend this tobacco to others. My personal note rating is a 8.2 overall.

I'm a comparatively new-ish pipe smoker at about 4 years running. Maybe I don't smoke frequently enough to handle it, but the nicotine level in this tobacco is too much for me to smoke an entire bowl, and I've smoked some strong ones. Within about 20 minutes I'm laying down and on the verge of nausea. I've tried numerous times now, and while I do agree that it is a decent, grassy/citrus like and light virginia, I think you can find better offerings from McClelland's, Formers or Sam Gawith. This tobac is just to cigarette-ish for my taste. To each his own of course.
