Orlik Tobacco Company A/S Golden Sliced (Red Tin)

(3.33)
A blend of golden, fully ripe Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States and a smidgen of perique. Natural sweetness and freshness with hints of citrus.
Notes: Previous edits to this blend have averred that a dispute exists whether or not Golden Sliced contains perique. It does. Please note that the website stglanepipe.com states on its Orlik page that certain of its blends (including Golden Sliced) contain "fully ripe Virginia and a little perique." Moderator.

Orlik- Golden sliced

I’ve had this blend in my cabinet for a while and after our Zoom pipe meeting ended, decided to finish my evening with this blend. I’ve recently been on a kick for VAPers and decided to revisit this one, as it has been a bit and wanted to see how it compares now.

I have stored this blend in a jar since May2019 so close to a year of age on this, the fragrant citrus scent is still here aplenty and really does smell terrific upon first whiff, however after a few more smells it almost reminds me of a cleaning agent.

Upon first light I was greeted with a strong hay and citrusy flavor, that was quite nice, this flavor never really leaves, and the VA’s are very bright not sweet.

The Perique is lacking for the most part and here I sit wishing it was more present. This blend is highly recommended for new Virginia smokers, sip it and enjoy the light tasting flavor.

I can see myself grabbing this on occasion but I prefer other VaPers with more oomph.

Recommended to new smokers, VaPer veterans look elsewhere.

Citrusy, Honey-sweet, hay, slighly fruity. GS is a standard in the Va/Per category for a reason. As many have mentioned, the Perique is typically slight, even more someone like myself, who is sensitive to vitamin-N. Gentleman zombie made a important observation that if puffy quickly on this tobacco, you'll pay the consequences. Sip and enjoy, otherwise it will be harsh. It isnt a favorite Va/Per of mine but certainly one I enjoy time to time. I find it to be a "refreshing" smoke, which makes it a great summer blend candidate. Can be smoked all day by veterans and those who can handle nicotine in repetition. 7.5/10

OGS has a nice grassy hay'is flavor with a little faint hint of citrus that I really like. At the end of the bowl, a weak but pleasant taste of the Perique comes forward. OGS is my personal favorite in the Va /Per mixture class.

Ive just made it through my first tin of OGS. I cannot for the life of me understand how that is, but it is so. I do not review each blend i smoke, not by a long shot, and have mostly stuck to reviewing blends i smoke excessively, or the odd blend that i felt had something unique or noteworthy. this is tge very first blend ive reviewed after just one tin. I felt compelled to, because ogs was like coming home to a well loved friend. Its neither sharp, nor exciting, complex, or exotic. What it is, though, is exactly what i seek 8 out of 10 times i fire up a pipe. It is comforting, delicious, soft, and uncomplicated. It is the quintessential simple pleasure. A nearly perfect blend for my expectations of a pipe. It is exquisite in its simplicity. I hope that my enthusiasm for the blend doesn't wane with time, as has happened before...but i feel confident that it won't. My new go to.

Edit: after smoking two 100gram tins id like to add that strangely, i prefer this blend fully rubbed out. Not a move i pull too often. But i began noticing that the bowls i found sweetest, coolest and creamiest were those i rubbed out. Just my observation. Absolutely love this stuff, got several more tins on the way. Oh, and one last thing. There's perique in this blend, without question. Yes its very minimal. No, it doesnt really taste like a Vaper. But perique is present. Who are these individuals who insist that there isnt nor ever has been a smidgen of condimental perique in a tin that is labeled as containing perique? I dont understand it. If you think that your oh-so-sophisticated palate is so dialed in to whiffing out an odor that you insist that the people who ACTUALLY MAKE THE STUFF are wrong, and you know better than the longtime blenders, then you my friend take yourself too seriously. Enjoy your pipe. We can't all be right all the time.

Edit 12/17: while i don't mean to say that this is less of a smoke, i must say i am really not reaching for it any more, as peter stokkebyes luxury navy flake has done for me better what this blend once did. It is less lemony, burns cooler, and has a shade more perique flavor while remaining a lightly spiced va. A bit more nicotine, and cheaper to boot. This discerning judge has traded up, and as such must downgrade this to a 3 star blend

Perique or burley? I always thought there was a perique like ghost and attributed it to some kind of top note. I whole heartedly believe that the mistranslation thing is all marketing. I feel the "burley" was actually Green River Burley given a perique treatment, and thus they are not legally able to say "Perique". Turn your can over...it says 'perigue' not perique. That is definitely a g not a q. So they still are not saying it has "Perique". All that aside, this is a really good flake one that should be considered especially since it is so inexpensive for a tin.

Wanting to add more VAs to my collections, I bought this. It had good reviews on this site and was very cheap for a 40 gram pouch. So If I didn't like it, not too much to risk.

I read a lot that it has a flavoring added, but I really can't detect it in the pouch and not so much in the flavor. It does give off a slight citrus flavor when smoked. Espeically as you get further down the bowl.

I really enjoyed this tobacco and think it would be a great try for someone trying to get into VAs but still want a little flavor in their baccy.

The 40 gram pouch is a great buy for me because it's not as cumbersome as a tin and can be smoked on the run. The amount is also perfect because it will probably all be smoked before it gets dried out.

Comes a little dry in the pouch but it's at the right level for my tasting.

This is a solid virginia flake, very approachable.

The tin note is nice, dried fruit and hay. The flakes themselves are pretty, medium brown with lighter bits throughout. Moisture is smokable.

The smoke is a very good no bite Virginia . Mostly hay and grass with some sweeter hints on occasion. The flavor is consistent throughout. I dont pick up the perique, that doesn't mean its not there. Burns nice and clean.

With age I would imagine this would be an even better smoke.

What I consider with all tobaccos is price vs quality of smoke. And this is a very good smoke for a very good price. Its not a mind blowing life changing smoke but its really good at what it is.

There are alot of much more expensive flakes that dont even come close to this one.

Will buy again and cellar.

Upon opening the round tin, I’m greeted by two rows of perfectly aligned flakes. They consist of mainly bright and some darker Virginias. I did not detect any Perique. The tin note is citrus, fresh cut grass, and a trace of hay. I usually fold and stuff, but rubbing out works well too. This smoked well in various briars and cobs. It did not bite. The nicotine level is mild. Overall, it’s smooth, mild and straightforward. It works best for me as a morning smoke, but can easily be smoked all day.

I recommend this for beginners. It’s also a good change of pace for Virginia lovers.

A classic flake tobacco. This was my introduction to VA Flake. I find the blend is medium in all areas and very enjoyable. Some say there's perique and maybe there is some, but if it's there, it has a role I don't pick up on. What is front and center is the grassy/citrus flavors that is very pleasant. I smoke this year round. I find it is a refreshing smoke especially during the warmer weather. For me, it smokes best in a couple of my billiards. VA Flake is one of the few tobaccos I have pipes specifically dedicated for. It doesn't matter if I fold and stuff or rub it out, it provides and enjoyable pleasant smoke. On my scale, it is certainly a "cellar it" tobacco and I have.

What could be left to say about this perennial favorite of modern pipe smokers?

A lush virginia flake featuring a skillfully applied topping of bergamot orange, the same flavor responsible for earl grey tea. The tobacco and topping work very nicely together.

Nearly universally enjoyed. Perhaps not everyone's favorite but not too many would turn down a bowl. Reasonably priced to boot. Great summertime smoke.

Keeps much better in the round tin than the square.
