Orlik Tobacco Company A/S Golden Sliced (Red Tin)
(3.33)
A blend of golden, fully ripe Virginia leaves from the traditional districts of the United States and a smidgen of perique. Natural sweetness and freshness with hints of citrus.
Notes: Previous edits to this blend have averred that a dispute exists whether or not Golden Sliced contains perique. It does. Please note that the website stglanepipe.com states on its Orlik page that certain of its blends (including Golden Sliced) contain "fully ripe Virginia and a little perique." Moderator.

I've never really cared for this tobacco. Another reviewer suggests a hayish quality, I agree. It's not a bad tobacco, it simply lacks something. A venerable old name, try it if you must and you know you must!

I do not disagree with the esteemed Tantric, except to say that the added Burley makes this a dull smoke for me. Yes, nothing objectionable, and quite easy for simple country folk to enjoy, but nothing whatever memorable about this.

Although it’s marketed as a VaPer, the Perique here is minimal.
Instead, the pepper of the Perique plays second fiddle to the Virginias. Primary flavors are grassy, hay-like, and buttery smooth.
I opted for a fold-and-stuff pack and required a couple of relights, but nothing egregious.
Interested to see how it does with age.

Fresh tobacco smells spicy, citrusy and after fresh hay. Spiciness was main characteristic also during smoking. Moisture of tobacco was accurate, do not need relights. Burns till the end without dottle. I was expecting much more sugar and less peppery.

In short. This is just too soft, mellow and sweet. Not bad, just not as endearing as I wish a high regarded non aromatic tobacco should be.

Bought as a sampler from my local tobacco specialist, after seeing high adornment of this blend from Oslo Pipe Club, so although I won’t accurate describe the tin aroma, the tobacco offers notes of citrus and hay.
These aromas dominate its flavours, with a slight tanginess and spiciness, offered from the pinch of Perique. Probably. Highly reminiscent of Mac Baren’s Navy Flake, this tobacco offers a thicker smoke, and could make for a fine all-day everyday smoke. I, however, smoking in moderation, does not find it intriguing enough for it to have such high praises. Cube cut, it lights and stays lit easily, but smoke it slowly, or it will try to bite.
But don’t get me wrong, it’s a fine tobacco over all.

Presentation is nice. The flakes are neat and uniform, a nice yellow and brown. The smell is sharp and tangy and a little grassy.
Taste: This is a zippy, zesty blend, with notes of nectarine, maybe apricot, grass, lemon citrus, some oats, maybe plum skin. This is a fruit-forward blend. There isn't much oat-like taste or earthiness, to my palate.
Strength is mild. Nicotine is mild.
I maybe would recommend it to any lover of Virginias, but not Virginia Perique-lovers. It just doesn't have the character of a Virginia Perique blend really, and I think the topping impedes the taste potential. It's a champion flake with a good reputation. However, I don't think I'd ever buy it again because of the topping. I think the closest thing it reminds me of is apricot.

I had cellared a 100g tin for fours years before I cracked it open. Nice look, nice smell. Tin didn't state any other ingredients but Virginina. First pipe was nice, just there was this aroma in the background reminding me of aged Erinmore Flake, just much less intense. Maybe a cross over? I smoked several bowls from various pipes, including some that have never seen any Erinmore. Yet, the taste remained. So, I attribute this to some casing. Not sure what to make of this flake. Not really my cup of tea, but I won't exclude to get back to it. Let's put it this way: when I want a pure Virginia flake: this is not one. Perique? I doubt it, and the marketing lingo in German speaking countries don't mention any. So, overall, not bad, but not my first choice.

It isn't a tobacco that I like it. The taste is very subtle. Some almonds, low bitterness, low acidity and low body. The aftertaste is kind of almonds.

Pretty average tobacco. I wasn't craving nicotine after my smoke session but I wasn't completely satisfied. The flavor was nothing to rave about, neither great nor terrible. I didn't notice any casing which for me is a good thing. The best part about this tobacco in my opinion is the room note; it's pleasant and mild, not invasive like some folks have with English blends (I am not one of those people). You could probably get away with smoking this in public without all of the ranting and raving. I think the balance of my tins will end up as stocking stuffers for my friends, for me there is just too many better options out there and not enough time.
