Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Ennerdale Flake

(3.11)
Notes: Our best selling flake by a wide margin. Predominately Virginia leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi (86%) but with the addition of sun cured Malawi (10%) to add sweetness, strength and to cool the smoke and Malawi burley (4%) to "carry the flavour" in addition to its cooling and strength qualities. (burley is very good at absorbing casings and flavours) A background flavour of almond is enhanced with the addition of fruit flavours, vanilla, and the special 'English type' flavours which give this tobacco its distinctive, yet typical 'English' Aroma associated with the UK best selling brands such as Condor, St Bruno and Mellow Virginia.

good evening gentlemen.

I have been smoking ennerdale mixture for some time, lately gawith have introduced a tinned version to the UK labelled "broken flake".

This I thought would be like the ennerdale mixture, but opening the tin, it is visually very different, where as the mixture is ready rubbed with some chunks of flake, the tin is practically full flakes albeit only slightly broken. my review for the mixture stands with this albeit with a couple of minor differences.

the tinned version the almond note is more prominent, albeit the fruity, rum like notes still take centre stage.

interestingly the moisture content in the the tin is a touch less than the mixture.

So down to an actual review.

the tinned version is an absolutely stellar smoke, the flakes themselves rub out with the utmost ease to which ever consistency you desire and lights perfectly every time gently and slowly working it's way down to a fine ash.

I know ennerdale is a tobacco that splits opinion, but in my opinion it is a true bucket list tobacco, one that must be tried at least once, you may try it that once and never touch it again but you may try it once and it may flick a switch so to speak and become a firm favourite.

room note I find a touch stronger than the mixture, so you may end up getting appreciative comments from other smokers but it is bound to raise the odd eyebrow and comment from non smokers but shouldn't be anything to drastic.

The flavour is applied rather liberally and while I really enjoy it I can see how others wouldn't, it is rather strong on the fruits, flowers and perfume, but it will make a good entry point if you wish to venture into Lakeland territory, just beware that the flavour will ghost a pipe quickly, so if it is your first time, try in a cob or a pipe you don't mind exorcising if you don't like it.

strength just a touch past medium and should be comfortable enough for most smokers and I think It would make for a nice repeatable smoke through out the day.

top marks.

A bold in your face taste. Reminds me of Acid cigars. But a heavier use of botanical oils. Flakes do need to be dried a bite. And rub some out for starters. Its an intense smoke. Amazingly the Virginia find a way to shine through all the topping and casing. All in all a nice tobacco blend. Differently in a class of it own call LAKELAND. Heard it call the Monty Python of tobacco.

I finally finished the jar that would never seem to end. It started out at four ounces and as I was nearing the end, a kind soul, thinking I really liked the stuff, sent me another four ounces. Well, I don't really like the stuff that much, but I find it nice in a little cob once in a while. In fact, I really enjoy this combination on a golf course.

It is a mindless monochromatic smoke. The taste is the topping, which is, perfumey. Yes, I know that that is not what is described but that is all I get. It gets weaker as you get down the bowl, but I never really get a clear taste of Virginia or burley with this blend. Like all GH blends it will not bite regardless of how much you push it.

The bottom line on whether you will like this blend is whether you like the topping. It is also one of those where what you smell is what you get. If you get a chance to sniff the bag and don't like what you smell, pass this one by.

Of importance to this blend, I will note that nothing ghosts like Ennerdale. This will ghost cobs, meers, bags, jars. Hell, if you put this in a bag with other samples and ship it, all of the samples will taste like Ennerdale. I know this as the 4 oz. shipped to me also contained other samples. I actually had to reorder all of those samples to confirm that they all did not actually taste like Ennerdale. It is the most pervasive topping I have ever experienced. It is blends like this that give everything that leaves that factory a floral twang, even when the blend has no topping.

In summary, I like this alright as mentioned above, but there are many other GH blends that I would reach for in the place of this one, so I will leave this at two stars because there is really no tobacco flavor to it at all.

Sooooooo...... Ennerdale Flake then???? First experience and all I can taste is the smell of my old Mums musty brown tights in the washing pile mixed with talcum powder, carbolic, embalming fluid and a coachload of pensioners all sucking on Parma Violets and Barley sugars and farting Codliver oil... Oh, and a hint of Lavender. Not convinced this is a direction in life I need to be taking to be honest.... P.S. Thank Beelzebub I smoked it in a Meer!!!

My first foray into the dreaded world of Lakelands. I tried to approach this one with an open mind. First, the tin note. Yes, its slightly gross once youve read about all the unpleasant associations it might have. The presentation: they call it a flake but its quite rubbed out already. More like a shredded flake. Slightly moist. I packed without paying too much attention and the thing behaved very well. It has VERY forgiving burn characteristics. The first time i tried Ennerdale, maybe my expectations were biased, but i didnt find it as perfumy and ''aromatic'' as most people would have it. I found it pleasant and rather subtle (coming from someone who usually favors Lat blends...). On subsequent smokes i had to admit that it is quite perfumy after all, but not in an offensive way. I dedicated a cob to it so no ghosting problem at all. The room note is strong but pleasant, with some notes id describe as dark cherry. A welcome change of pace for me, a lovely tobacco, making me wonder at all the VERY polarized reviews out there...

Well, due to the divided opinions of the reviewers on this site, I've been waiting for long before trying this blend, but finally my curiosity won and I did buy a tin. The tin smell really contains the infamous "soapy" flavour, but there is much more and the ensemble is to me very pleasant; the taste is a symphony of flavours, flowers, fruit and more dark notes, and I find it simply fantastic and unique. In the background the high quality leaf gives body to the blend and contributes well to the overall taste. Very outstanding and highly recommended; sadly I've almost finished my tin and here in Italy Ennerdale is sold at 25 euros for 50 g (!), so maybe I'll wait for my next trip to Switzerland...

When people complain that somehow this is for the petticoat crowd, I get really irritated. This is actually a pretty hearty blend, full of the 19th century preference for flavorings that were favored in snuff (there were many more snuff perfumes in fact). Its medium strength as GH&Co. tobaccos go....as there is a good deal more virginia than you find in some of the lakeland blends. Less of the smokey fire cured taste. Its a slightly milder version of kendall flake in a sense, although the flavoring mix is different. It reminds some of the old Condor, or even St Bruno (I dont quite see that but its all subjective in the end). But its more distinctive and a bit stronger. I love all the Gawith Hoggarth blends. Ive not found one I don't like (well, except maybe the black twists). This is not as satisfying as Kendall or Coniston Cut Plug or dark Scented....but it is a great earlier in the day smoke. First rate stuff and its a shame in a way that some will dismiss it as just perfumed. This is the old school british pipe smoker stuff. And it gets full marks for that.

I didn't expect much from Ennerdale but I was immediately blown away. This is a glorious flake from The Lake District. The Virginias used are very smooth and smoke cool. The Malawi burley is tasty with some spice and stands out more in the second half of the bowl. There is a massive almond note with some distinct but subtle floral/lavender tastes. These toppings really enhance the tobacco flavor rather than mask them. I've never had a tobacco burn as well as this flake. Everytime it burns to nothing but a fine white ash. I knew after my first smoke I'd be needing a lot more for the cellar!

This is a perfect Lakeland tobacco and if you want to taste and know what really is a Lakeland tobacco with its typical flavoring here it is! I mean that Ennerdale is the archetype prototype of the Lakeland (Kendal) tobacco and it is the archetype prototype of the characteristic Lakeland flavoring (I really don’t know the composition of this typical essence). A perfect flake with a good smell and an excellent burning. Even the nicotine content is perfect. In conclusion a really nice flavoring and a really good tobacco. For this reason in my personal system rating (from 1 to 10) my score is 9 and 3,5 stars. My review is about the tin version.

Random thoughts on Ennerdale Flake:

I swear there's cardamom in here - speculating about what's in Lakelands is part of the fun

Sometimes I like to daydream about all the fancy soaps the reviewers here have owned

I wonder how much of the perfumed aroma is the sun-cured Malawi, that smell reminds me of some very good Oriental leaf

This is G&H's bestselling flake - for every reviewer here who is all "Eww soap!" there are thousands of people saying "BRING ME ENNERDALE"

Sometimes it is fun to drop a straight VA or an English blend into my Ennerdale pipe

This stuff grows on you, in order to keep my supply safe it's best if you don't try it. Never Ennerdale, not even once!
