Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Ennerdale Flake

(3.11)
Notes: Our best selling flake by a wide margin. Predominately Virginia leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi (86%) but with the addition of sun cured Malawi (10%) to add sweetness, strength and to cool the smoke and Malawi burley (4%) to "carry the flavour" in addition to its cooling and strength qualities. (burley is very good at absorbing casings and flavours) A background flavour of almond is enhanced with the addition of fruit flavours, vanilla, and the special 'English type' flavours which give this tobacco its distinctive, yet typical 'English' Aroma associated with the UK best selling brands such as Condor, St Bruno and Mellow Virginia.

I heartily agree with the majority of the reviewers above that Ennerdale Flake is a unique and delightful palate pleasing blend! I just recently tried a few bowls of this wonderful weed and believe the time and effort to rub out the long strips was worth the effort.

What makes Ennerdale Flake so unique is that the natural taste of the leaf is not interfered with by the topping, which reminded me of a coffee/almond taste. I also happen to like St. Bruno, and this flake was very similar, although not as strong. I suspect the Malawi burley (naturally sweeter than the American variety) also enabled this blend to smoke cool and nutty down to the last strand!

If you enjoy the elegant and unique, grab a tin or two of Ennerdale Flake. The description says it is by far this blender's top selling flake. I can understand why and believe you will enjoy it greatly!

I agree with the previous reviewers caution regarding flavored tobaccos and new smokers. This is not your standard tobacco shop aromatic. This is...er... different!

The bag aroma of this one is over the top in its sweetness and "floral-ness". I immediately thought of strong licorice which immediately made me think of Mixture #79. I had a strong bias against this one. However, it surprised me. The flavoring is fairly strong but interesting. It doesn't cover up the tobacco underneath but offers an enhancement to it. It's a little stronger than I usually like and that makes this a wonderful "sometime" tobacco for me... a dessert blend, if you will. Yes, it's soapy, floral, Lakeland - whatever adjective you prefer. Yes, it's heavy in that regard. But don't let that scare you. Try a couple of bowls before you decide, as it really lifted some of my personal biases, which surprised me. Do dedicate a pipe to this if you find it's something you enjoy. This leaves THE most persistent ghost I've ever encountered that two bowls of C&D's Kelly's Coin could not exorcise. And this was a meerschaum pipe! The taste remained on the stem and on my teeth, gums and tongue for a long time. Yet, I found it pleasant.

Highly recommended for the adventurous. Certainly not for everyone but if I am any indication, it's for more people than they believe! This is a great blend - not as much to my taste as other G&H blends, but worthy of an occasional bowl.

The first time smoking this in the house I was pleasantly surprised by members of my family telling me how much they liked the scent. My youngst son said it reminded him of "Grandpas" pipe tobacco.

Considering I lost my "Pipe Smoking Buddy" a few years ago, this comment instantly ensured it's addition into my regular rotation.

Like all blends by this Great English Tobacco House, the flavorings, (or if your prefer, flavOURings), enhance the high quality tobacco that they use in their mixtures.

Easy to light and keep lit, the flavor ran consistent the length of the bowl. The taste is a complex mix of rich, sweet, floralry, fruity. Just a really pleasant experience.

It burns to a grey/white dry dottle.

A Nice Smoke.

Does not taste like soap, it tastes like lotion or shampoo smells. It is not the most highly scented of Gawith and Hoggarth's flakes by any means, but does remind me of my favorite nasal snuff, which is quite possibly the most heavily perfumed nasal snuff in the world, Gawith and Hoggarth's "Almond." As with the snuff, the flake is almond flavored, not scented, not with amaretto as in the snuff, but with the same almond scent you find in shampoos and lotions. As with apricot kernals/cyanides, not everyone can taste nor smell this particular almond if they lack the right gene. I can; however two of my neighbors can only detect the perfumes which are thrown in on top of the almond, which is exactly what is done on the amazing almond snuff. However it should have been amaretto, as the snuff has, not almond as the flake has, so that everyone could taste it. If it was, it would be my favorite flake from G&H. But the taste of almond shampoo is not my first choice. Still recommended as a great social and weekend smoke, but I prefer the more heavily floral offerings which are actually "soapy."

Was gifted an ample sample of this by a good friend who really loves this flake.

This one surprised me. Not only by it's flavor, but by how much I ended up liking it. I was expecting to choke on granny's perfume and the initial few puffs nearly filled those expectations. Then the Lakeland calmed down and a very nice nutty flavor began building. By mid bowl it was more nutty than floral and I found myself really enjoying it. The nuttiness has more than one source. Part topping, part Burley, and if my taste buds are accurate there is also a little from the Virginias. All subsequent bowls of this flake were more enjoyable as it seems to be one of those blends that grows on you. A very nice smoke. Not quite 4 stars for me, but it may get there if I keep smoking it. Right now 3.5

Body is medium to strong. Taste is medium to full. Flavoring is mild to medium although medium to mild may be more accurate as that's how it smokes. Burns very well.

From the description, this tobacco does not sound like my thing. I have to say I enjoyed it, and I would smoke it again. I am almost done with a 25 g sample. I rub it out as a ball between my palms and let it dry a little before smoking it.

This presents as a high quality Virginia with a little burley for body. There are citrus, vanilla and almond notes the description predicted. I did not get any of the floral others mention, but there is a quality to it and the combination of flavors that is hard to describe.

It is a medium/full flavor, and the toppings work quite well. They are tasty and well balanced and don't overpower the tobacco experience. This is a high quality aromatic that delivers. I recommend it.

Edit: 8/17 I seem to have acquired taste for this. I bought a half kilo and am working my way through it. That makes it a 3.5 on the rating scale for me.

Ahhhh!.... This reminds me of the first whiffs I caught as a youngster as the old boys would walk by, and I was caught in their slipstreams of swirling blue smoke!!

I'm no tobacco snob nor to that matter do I feel the need to spend more than £50 on a pipe. This stuff, whilst admittedly having a soapy nature to it, the almondy, rummy, vanilla, and liquorice aromas produced by this billowing blend are captivating..

It's a nice run of the mill, 'what you smell is what you get blend'. If you're a tobacco snob, and are looking to inanely dissect every atom of the smoke, the flavour and the nuances of this blend, until the very laws of oral-factory physics have been re-defined........In your own head. Then you'll probably call this a boring plain smoke, with an overpowering aroma...

Just as well that I'm smoking it and enjoying it soley for myself and not you then isn't it!!

Huzza!

I was looking at about a half dozen or so sample baggies that I had and came across this one except this one was marked 3 ounces, so apparently, I bought this one, jarred it, kept some out to smoke and forgot all about it. This was many moons ago. What was left in the baggie was bone dry but the compulsive part of me wants to smoke these bags up as there really isn’t enough to jar and on top of that I have no idea where this particular jar is and just want to be done with it. Maybe some of you can understand. TMTRN (too much tobacco right now). I put some of this in my Ukrainian Pear Pipe that my girlfriend bought me that I use for aromatics. Probably due to the excessive drying period I found this one to be mildly fragrant with a slight almond flavor and on occasion the Lakeland perfume taste. If I can ever find my jar, I will smoke more but this as it stands now was not too bad. I normally do not care for the botanical oils, floral, perfumes of G&H but this one ain’t half bad. I rated this mild due to it being bone dry and I am sure it has lost some of its essence.

Admittedly I've not tried the SG or GH & Co. blends with high doses of the Lakeland Florals ... however the blends I have tried without LF have been quite darn good. I consider Ennerdale Flake my first step into the "flower garden". The tin note reeks of quality Virginia's from around the globe, melded with some Burley, and a medium floral note reminiscent of geraniums. The initial char light can be rather difficult if the flake is not sufficiently dried nor rubbed out. When finally lit there is a release of that slight soapy/flowery taste characteristic of the LF blends (so I'm told) ... yet it doesn't seem to last very long. Quite to my surprise & enjoyment the ensuing smoke translates into a heavenly sweet & flavorful experience. As a child, my dear ole Momma would keep a bar of soap in my mouth with regularity for being a "potty mouth" .... I now understand she was really just training me up to handle LF-type blends later in life!
