Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Ennerdale Flake

(3.11)
Notes: Our best selling flake by a wide margin. Predominately Virginia leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi (86%) but with the addition of sun cured Malawi (10%) to add sweetness, strength and to cool the smoke and Malawi burley (4%) to "carry the flavour" in addition to its cooling and strength qualities. (burley is very good at absorbing casings and flavours) A background flavour of almond is enhanced with the addition of fruit flavours, vanilla, and the special 'English type' flavours which give this tobacco its distinctive, yet typical 'English' Aroma associated with the UK best selling brands such as Condor, St Bruno and Mellow Virginia.

I finally finished the jar that would never seem to end. It started out at four ounces and as I was nearing the end, a kind soul, thinking I really liked the stuff, sent me another four ounces. Well, I don't really like the stuff that much, but I find it nice in a little cob once in a while. In fact, I really enjoy this combination on a golf course.

It is a mindless monochromatic smoke. The taste is the topping, which is, perfumey. Yes, I know that that is not what is described but that is all I get. It gets weaker as you get down the bowl, but I never really get a clear taste of Virginia or burley with this blend. Like all GH blends it will not bite regardless of how much you push it.

The bottom line on whether you will like this blend is whether you like the topping. It is also one of those where what you smell is what you get. If you get a chance to sniff the bag and don't like what you smell, pass this one by.

Of importance to this blend, I will note that nothing ghosts like Ennerdale. This will ghost cobs, meers, bags, jars. Hell, if you put this in a bag with other samples and ship it, all of the samples will taste like Ennerdale. I know this as the 4 oz. shipped to me also contained other samples. I actually had to reorder all of those samples to confirm that they all did not actually taste like Ennerdale. It is the most pervasive topping I have ever experienced. It is blends like this that give everything that leaves that factory a floral twang, even when the blend has no topping.

In summary, I like this alright as mentioned above, but there are many other GH blends that I would reach for in the place of this one, so I will leave this at two stars because there is really no tobacco flavor to it at all.

I'm not even going to attempt to deconstruct the aroma additives to Ennerdale Flake. Suffice to say it is a very heady bouquet that will be familiar to regular snuff users. I didn't get the almond in the description at all however. Whether that's just me or almond aromas are significantly transformed by burning, I cannot say.

This tobacco takes a light beautifully and burns well.

I had a particularly enjoyable experience smoking this in the garden in the evening, where its heady character seemed to make sense. Otherwise I would struggle to think where and when to smoke this. It's pleasant enough, but is just so intrusive. It might be of use to someone trying to hide their tobacco habit, since it isn't what people are going to expect from tobacco smells.

Hmm. This was my first bite of Lakeland soap, and it was a strong one indeed. The smoke conjures up what I expect I'd get if I packed my pipe with lilac-scented mothballs -- something sharply feminine and octagenarian (yes, as in "old lady") about the bouquet. While the scent is certainly interesting, it doesn't seem like something that should be coming from a pipe. The tobacco also was looking to bite like the dickens and, even with careful puffing, left a bit of sting behind.

So, while this may be an appealing blend for those who have acquired a taste for soapy florals, I am afraid I cannot take a place among their powdered, petticoated company.

American here, Smoking now:

Bag note smells like… grandma’s soap dish. I’m not sorry it does. Anise, lavender, floral aroma. Off putting to me but having tried Kendal Flake I wasn’t too afraid.

Loose semi broken flakes that I let dry for a little bit before rubbing out and packing.

The tase. First impression is a familiar Virginia. Grassy sweet fermented Virginia. Burley is noticeable and gives it an earthy and woody body. Grandma’s potpourri dish is very apparent as you smoke it however it’s not as strong or off putting to me as the bag note. With the natural taste of va/bur tobacco flake it works well. There’s a floral, lavender, anise, licorice, potpourri flavor that isn’t obnoxious. It’s not something I’m super into though. Smoked well enough, cool and dry. No mouth tingle no bite. Retrohale is lots of Virginia and Lakeland flavor. Floral, lavender, rose, anise, licorice, herbs, perfume, soap. It’s a good tobacco however you just enjoy the unique Lakeland flavor or don’t. It’s polarizing.

Im glad I tried it. I much more enjoyed Kendal flake however. This is definitely a 3-4 star blend. Personal bias though I would probably give it 2 as I don’t care for it. Would I recommend someone try it and see for themselves? Absolutely.

First thing: my tin of Ennerdale was (unlike rectangular tins usually are) so tightly sealed that was really hard to crack and the paper lid inside the tin was thicker than usual, consequently the tobacco was in perfect conditions; kudos to G&H. Once opened the tin I was expecting almond, vanilla, Rum and others foody goodness with a bit of misterious extra; what I got was a burst of citrus and flowers, mainly bergamot and geranium, with a whiff of (maybe) coumarin. Very odd but absolutely natural and fine. Once lit I started to understand why this stuff is so divisive: the smoke is all perfume, it’s very nice and pleasant but there’s almost no tobacco flavor, no vanilla nor Rum, just the scent with a bitter/astringent effect on the tongue and too little sweetness to counterbalance. A pity, I really wanted to like EF because of the unique essence but I finished mixing it with others plain Virginias to up-grade sweetness and true tobacco flavor.

Dear all, I am going to compare this with tobacco in general. Firs of all. I like aromatics. When I smell the aroma of fresh tobacco, I was really surprised. (First lake style for me) It was like Victorians toilet and perfumes. To be honest... I like it. I was expecting the flavoring would disappear after starting to smoke... but not. And to be honest... I liked it. It is always very interesting experience.

So, why only 2 stars? Well, after several bowls you may be bored with such strong flavoring, it could become strong and overloading. This tobacco is definitely not for daily smoking and after several bowls yo may start hate it.

This seems to be one of the most divisive tobaccos out there, the aroma from opening the packet is not the normal aroma you would associate with tobacco! This is a highly aromatic tobacco and you can really taste the floral notes. If you don't like aromatics you really will not like this!! I personally find this tobacco very enjoyable however it is not a tobacco I could smoke all the time. I would also highly recommend not putting this in your favourite pipe! This tobacco is a real ghosted, I cannot stress this enough. If you are trying if for the first time I would definitely use a cob or clay.

I'm not usually an aromatic smoker but thought it was worth giving this quintessential lakeland blend a try. The taste, while not unlike grandmas soap, was pleasant and were it just a matter of taste I'd be tempted to buy it again for those days where I felt like something a little different. Unfortunately, there is more to a smoke than the taste and it was in other factors that I felt let down. The blend was hard to keep lit and perhaps it was due to this that I also found it very bitey. Perhaps it just needs more drying time but I bought this from a bulk tin at a local B&M and wasnt excessively moist to start with. Pleased to have tried it, but wont be rushing to get it again.

I really wanted to enjoy this tobacco more than I did. Having done a lot of walking around Ennerdale Water itself - indeed I spent my honeymoon there many years ago - when I was looking for a new flake to try this seemed a promising choice. I bought it as a loose tobacco and it came out of the packet in long, stringy, broken strips. Rubbed out thoroughly and packed carefully there is no doubt it provides for a cool and creamy smoke. But I am not a particular fan of heavy flavoring and EF is shot through with it. Curiously it lacked the richness I was expecting. The first third of the bowl tasted like sherbet dip. While this does diminish as the smoke progresses, it never fully relinquishes its grip thereafter. I took note of some comments here and used just the one briar to finish the batch, as it does ghost the pipe as well as the palate. But after a clean and a few bowlfuls of a Latakia mixture the briar is restored. It has ruined St Bruno for me however. I had some in a different pipe after this and all I could taste was soap. I can't say it is entirely unpleasant but I will not be rushing to try any more soon.

This is Gawith Hogarth's take of 172 flake. In my opinion. Upon lighting it it has a flowery perfume taste that is quite nasty. As the bowl proceeds it does have a really nice flavor. However, that initial flowery taste ghosts the bowl bad. On the plus side, it has a decent nic hit.
