Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Ennerdale Flake
(3.11)
Notes: Our best selling flake by a wide margin. Predominately Virginia leaf from Brazil, Zimbabwe and Malawi (86%) but with the addition of sun cured Malawi (10%) to add sweetness, strength and to cool the smoke and Malawi burley (4%) to "carry the flavour" in addition to its cooling and strength qualities. (burley is very good at absorbing casings and flavours) A background flavour of almond is enhanced with the addition of fruit flavours, vanilla, and the special 'English type' flavours which give this tobacco its distinctive, yet typical 'English' Aroma associated with the UK best selling brands such as Condor, St Bruno and Mellow Virginia.

Ennerdale Flake was something I've been looking forward to try because I enjoy the Lakeland essence blends. The flake was perfectly moist not too wet and the tin note was incredible with a combination of rose and other flowery scents, perhaps somewhat fruity. I didn't really notice any almond or vanilla flavor - maybe way in the back. The tobacco is a terrific Burley Virginia blend with the Burley up front for a smokey, slightly spicy smoke. My biggest surprise was that the scent and flavor was much less intrusive than others report. It definitely has the Lakeland aroma, but not offensive at all - In fact, I'd prefer it heavier. It does burn hot which is typical of Burley, so sipping it slowly is important to bring out the subtle aroma and flavor; its best 1/2 way down. Definitely not over the top, perhaps they scaled down the essence intensity in my Sept 2022 version. An excellent, well made tobacco that is very enjoyable to smoke - Buy Some, you will enjoy it -

I grabbed 50g loose from the tobacconist last week. I wish id bought more to be honest. Such a lovely aroma on the jar note. I really like the spicy zesty flavour it leaves. I have been smoking it sparingly, and it smokes much better in a big bowl. I have had a flake what i blended with a generous pinch of cyprian latakia and if thats your thing you will really enjoy it. All in all this will become a regular in my cellar its so tasty. It burns well and doesnt require relights if your just smoking and not chin wagging. The nicotine is ok its not exactly a power house but satisfying non the less.

A Lakeland style aromatic has plenty of flavor. There are mostly floral notes and the tin is very full of these notes as is the taste. I can see why this is not for everyone. For me it is too much floral and other unique flavor. As a Lakeland it is good. it is not for those who love English or Aromatic blends. You need to appreciate the Lakeland blends. Also it was very wet from the tin that took off 1 star right away.

This flake came folded and crammed into a standard G/H rectangular tin. Despite the lack of vacuum sealing in recent production, this flake was usual G/H sopping wet even after sitting in the cellar for a year. The flakes are lighter brown and blonde in color. The tin aroma features almonds, vanilla, black tea, and rose. Each flake glistens in the light because of the heavy sugar crystal coating.
The rum and vanilla come through lightly in the taste and room note. The almond top note is a bit more prominent. There are some fleeting floral notes that are quite mild, and feature rose, lilac, and lavender. I was able to taste the underlying tobacco a bit more clearly in this blend than in some of the similar Lakeland flakes. The Virginia tobaccos yielded notes of black tea and hay. I did not pick up on the burley. I enjoyed this one more than the others in my recent detour into Lakeland style tobacco. I can easily see why so many people like this blend so much. I am glad to have tried it.

this is a favorite. after a year in the mason jar the smell is so unique. a very pleasant floral note with the awesome background of the best Virginia. rub it out and it is just wonderful. the burn is smooth and satisfying. not a fan of all Gawith Hoggarth & Co but this one is a keeper. The almond and rum add to its character. the citrus notes make the Virginia come alive. the vanilla is faint but it's there in the background. Lakeland isn't for everyone but if you want to try the best this one just might be it. don't be afraid. its best savored. the only issue is getting it. I keep 8oz on hand always. not for everyday but when I want a treat. like a fine johnny walker blue. burns very well to the bottom. the flavor never diminishes. A best seller and goes out of stock quick. you may want to dedicate a pipe to this one. the Lakeland can linger in the bowl a while.

Gawith and Hoggarth Ennerdale Flake - I finally got my grubby hands on some of this delicious flake ! It has the usual Lakeland flavor -scent plus what taste like citrus, rum and a little vanilla . I really don’t taste almond flavoring but the nutty burley comes through nicely . The sweet tangy Virginias and my favorite Burley from Malawi . I’m guessing they grow some great Virginia leaf as well . I switch back and forth between this and Brown flake aromatic as my favorite aromatic tobaccos . I see why this is Gawith Hoggarth’s number one selling flake . All the toppings sounds like too much but they compliment the natural tobacco taste nicely . 4

Here we are … basics: medium strength, burns easily, refreshing aromatic. Now the difficult part: I suggest to compare it to a watercolour landscape with lot of transparency, light sky some flowers and last layer a very good earthy burley which holds all together and gives some depth. Yes there is also a good Virginia layer. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/research-publications/jmw-turner/joseph-mallord-william-turner-dunstanburgh-castle-r1144253 A masterpiece!
Here after one year jar, the perfumes have greatly reduced living a more natural medium strong VABUR flake. Still very good but has lost character. I would now rate it 3 stars. It has become slightly dull.

Very interesting blend, but I found it packed quite a punch (I think it might have been on an empty/not full stomach). I have tried it a few times and it does tend to wallop me. Having said that, I do enjoy it and it is a fabulous blend to smoke in the garden on a sunny day. The Lakeland essence is right out there with citrus/grassy Virginias and sweet Burley.

Ennerdale Flake is an unique treasure of the tobacco world. The African Virginia leaf is sweet, grassy, and tasty—as with other Gawith VA flakes—while the burley adds a pleasant body and earthiness to the smoke. The top note is over the top, yet utterly scrumptious. I taste citrus, then rose geranium, and a little almond—in that order. Whoever wrote the tobacco tin blurb is off. This is not a "Background flavor." This is the Lakeland Essence in all its resplendence and intensity.

L'Ennerdale.
