Synopsis: A solid Va/per with more bright Virginia leaf and less perique than Escudo/Dunhill DNLR

The Virginias are at the forefront of this blend and are nice and grassy with slight hints of citrus fruit. The perique is lightly applied with a hint of spice that helps give the blend some character while at the same time rounding off the rough edges of the Virginias. There seems to be a little sweetness coming from a light sugar topping, but it enhances the flavors of the Virginias.

The flakes rub out evenly and smoke very well. I do get some noticeable tongue bite and a little harshness, but it is not too bad.

Comoy's Cask #4 is not as spicy as Escudo, though the perique seems to be of the same lot and flavor profile—just toned down. The Virginias in #4 do smoke with a more crisp mouthfeel that lacks the depth of flavors in Escudo. This is not a bad thing, but I do find #4 to be lighter and more straight forward when it comes to taste.

In comparing Comoy's Cask #4 to G. L. Pease Stratford or Telegraph Hill, I found the perique to offer different flavor notes, with G. L. Pease's blends tasting more of dark fruit and a sweeter spice used in baking, while those used in #4 contributing only a little spiciness. Additionally, the red Virginia's used in the G. L. Pease's blends offer more earthy notes in comparison to the crisp smoke of Cask #4.

In comparison to Orlik Golden Sliced, Comoy's Cask #4 does not seem to have a citrus topping and definitely has a more noticeable amount of perique.

This tobacco is absolutely identical to Peter Stokkeby's Luxury Navy flake. My advice is to buy whichever is cheaper, usually Stokkeby. When MacBaren Navy Flake went up in price I switched to Stokkeby's which is almost the same but very slightly milder.

I'll skip the debate and just say that this is a very enjoyable VaPer, but from my naive palate I would say it is lighter on the perique.

At the beginning of the bowl, I definitely picked up a few figgy flavors from the added perique, but I didn't notice an overwhelming spice or nicotine hit.

This tobacco smokes smooth, dry and cool throughout the entire bowl. Enjoyable down the the very last flakes of ash.

If you like flavorful virginia tobaccos that lean toward the sweeter side, you may want to grab a tin of this tobacco. Nothing jumps out, just a delicious tobacco.

This was one of the first VaPers I tried. It is very mild and has very little perique in it compared to other VaPers. I see some others are saying it is the same as PS luxury navy but It is definitely not the same tobacco but a similar blend. I bought this bulk and the moisture level was nice and didnt require too much drying time. The smell is a slightly sweet and bready smelling tobacco with some of that raisin sweetness. It may have a slightly sweet topping but it is not flavored at all. The flakes are pretty thin and look great. I always rub my flakes out as I find that gives me the best flavors but these would fold and stuff great especially being on the thinner side. This tobacco smokes great and has some bright and grassy tastes with the perique zest lingering just barely in the background. I like this tobacco but I prefer PS LNF to this as it is slightly sweeter and I find less stems in those flakes. Not a bad VaPer to try if you want a mild one. After trying CD bayou morning, that seems to have more of that perique zest if thats what you're after.

It's been a while, so I can't add to the idea that this is the same as the Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake, but my review for this is pretty much the same: A good solid balanced VaPer. For me, the Perique is evident throughout without being overwhelming and is nicely balanced by the straightforward VAs. The flakes are easy to work with and keep burning well. Those who prefer their tobacco on the sweet side might not care for this, but most others should give it a try.

I have really been enjoying my little foray into the world of Comoy blends. I have ordered all of them and have been nothing but pleased with every one I have tried so far.

Cask N0.4 is a beauty of a "navy" flake. We wont get into the debate on what makes a flake a "navy" flake. It seems that the navy moniker can be used to denote a number of characteristics. Either way, this is a great blend.

I too, like other users have heard the rumors that this blend is really Stokkeby's DLF in a spiffy new suit. Not quite sure to be honest, but I am sure about the taste.

This is a very respectable navy flake. While it was not a serious moment of pipe smoking nirvana, it was very enjoyable. The flake comes in a lighter color, and I could tell by the appearance this one would be in the higher frequencies when it comes to Virginias. I could tell this would have that nice lemony hay like citrus zing.

The flavor was very nice and totally unobtrusive. Some blends complexities require your full attention to be appreciated. This one just chugged along while I did different chores and was an excellent companion. Monetary constraints aside, this would make an excellent all day smoke.

The flavor mid bowl became a little deeper and darker than I expected. Definitely nice. I can definitely detect the perique involved in my nose.

I do think there is a light topping here. Maybe maple nor molasses? Not enough to come off as an aromatic but an interesting little twist.

I would definitely recommend this blend. Give it a try.

Comoy's Cask #4 has a jar note (this is a 2 oz bulk sample) that has notes of hay/grass a little citrus and a hint of earth. The smoke itself is VA forward with the hay notes leading the way. I also get some dark fruit notes and a tangy citrus note as well. Below this are notes of wood and earth. The perique is more felt than tasted. It does occasionally come out in the last half of the bowl. A note of figs and plum can be found in the background as well as a faint hint of that perique spice I love. This is a major criticism of the blend. There is just not enough perique to call this a VA/Per. So if you are looking for a traditional VA/Per this is not going to hit the sweet spot for you. The topping is sweet and slightly fruity I think. It could be rum and something else but I am not sure exactly what. Whatever it is it is very light and complements the tobacco very well. That said, I prefer other VA/Per's over this and it will not make a rotation. It might be worth a try if you are just getting into them. There is nothing inherently wrong with this blend but it is not outstanding either. The room note is tolerable overall a little too cigarette like to be pleasant. The nic hit is a the upper end of mild. This could be an all day smoke for the experienced smoker but it does have a bit of a rough edge so fast puffing may result in a little bite.

Sorry, this is poor stuff in my book. High hopes cracking that lovely foil seal - what nice packaging and presentation. Smells... a little fruity, sweet and mild. In the pipe, it manages to be both cloying and boring, this is quite a feat. The tobacco taste is... there, sorta... but watered down in some way. Whatever casing is present, this ubiquitious sweetness, it coats my mouth, reminds me of a cheap aromatic. And essentially that's what this is, it's a budget alternative to really good va/pers or Navy Flakes. So... okay. But given that Mac Baren Navy Flake is just a touch more expensive and twice as good, or something like Reiner 71 which is I guess probably twice as much in cost but... 10 times as good I see no reason to stockpile this or frankly even to finish the tin. Where ether of these offer integrated experiences with depths of spice/sweetness/toasted flavors, this offers an unpleasant harshness in the throat rather than a spice proper, and any sweetness from the leaf is overshadowed by the casing.

Pedestrian at best, unpleasant at worst. So many better things out there in this category.

I have been enjoying Cask #4 for quite a while now and the best way I can describe it would be that is it a solid go-to VaPer that hits the mark for me every time without a lot of fanfare. At the charing light and first 1/3 of the bowl, you enjoy the light hay and slightly sweet VA. The Perique begins to come forward and remains a well-behaved player throughout the rest of the bowl. If you change your cadence, you will be rewarded with varying flavors. There is no wow factor here, just a good, consistent VaPer that I would recommend.

I've tried both the tinned and bulk versions of #4 now which seem identical except for their respective ages.

I'll agree this is similar to LNF but I'm not sure they are the same beast (I enjoy both).

That said, the flakes in my bulk bag (the latest purchase) were broken up unlike the LNF. The cask #4 is made up with a variety of light and dark tobacco. They are easy to break up into chunks or to completely rub out for smoking.

Easy to light. The smoke to me is more VaPer than what I'd really think of as a true "NAVY" which to my thinking includes Rum Processing. This flake smokes great and offers a good VaPer experience. I can taste the virginias and the perique. It burns without need for relighting.

The Nic level to me is Medium with my tolerance. I can feel it in there but it doesn't bowl me over. The taste is peppery at times, grassy at times.. nothing spectacular but above average

I think with the LNFs lower bulk price point normally, that will be what remains in my cellar.
