I must admit this is yet another tobacco blend with a slightly confusing name & packaging. My specific confusion was the tin not stating anything about Latakia anywhere - is this supposed to be an English or a Virginia?? Of course, Latakia is the essential ingredient bringing this blend together. Admittedly, I should have known Latakia must be present given this blend's relation to the gold standard known as Dunhill's Standard Mixture. This being said, the highlights of toasted Turkish & Virginia tobaccos on the tin are not without warrant; Standard Mellow is quite a flavorful smoke, while remaining much more mellow than the Standard Mixture and indeed many other English blends.
I was actually introduced to Standard Mellow while looking for a consistently cool smoking blend to break-in new pipes and build up a good cake - I was NOT disappointed. I find the smoky/woodsy flavors subtle enough, and the smoking cool enough, to keep this in my rotation for breaking-in ALL my pipes, whether they are destined to be English blend pipes or not. It's an enticing and calming smoke with fluffy, white ash. The pine/oak notes offset by citrus & spice as well as good, clean fire - likely a result of Dunhill toasting the leaves in this blend. Additional flavor notes in the bouquet include a cigar-like earthiness, and hints of bourbon, vanilla, and candied ginger for me.
Oriental varietals always help cool a blend down in addition to spicing up the flavor profile, and they are right at home here with the clearly articulate portion of Latakia. I almost feel as if the blenders wanted to hide the Latakia just enough to make the smoker go searching for it across their taste buds. Of course, it's clearly evident once you grab hold of the flavor, but it never hits you over the head like a stronger English or Balkan blend might. Standard Mellow is a lesson in reservation and savoring the flavor of each moment.
I recommend anyone looking to dip their toe into English blends try Standard Mellow - it doesn't need much dry time, it loads & lights easy, stays lit well, and smokes super cool. I also recommend strong English/Balkan smokers give Standard Mellow a try to break-up their rotation and/or break-in new English dedicated pipes. Enjoy fellow Latakia lovers!

I suckered myself again into trying another one of these dismal STG Dunhill blends but, this one isn't so bad. The Standard Mixture series seem to me to be the better reincarnations probably due to their more simplistic compositions compared to other Dunhill blends. Unfortunately, upon opening the tin one is greeted with a not so natural smell that reminds me of wintergreen mouthwash; This is definitely some additive. I'm noticing this sort of thing more these days with cased virginias in english blends from European manufacturers that have a similar "air" about them. It subtly comes through in the smoke early on but more so diminishes with time. This is a light english where the base virginias are forward leaving the condimental elements farther in the background as seasoning. Actually, the turkish was just behind the virginias making it's presence known most of the time which I found what was most appealing to my taste. The latakia added hints of dark richness of coarse. And there was a bit of that harsher element from the not so well matured stoved red virginias more prominent in other Dunhill mixtures... oh, well. Despite being labeled "Mellow" it could be perceived as actually stronger than STM, being more virginia forward with lower condimental tobaccos that otherwise can cool a smoke and lower nicotine as was the case with the earlier Murray's versions. If it wasn't for the "green mouthwash" scent I might have stocked up on this in hopes of improvement with years of aging.

This is a very interesting English blend. This blend smokes much more like a Virginia blend that a English. The packaging has a simplistic but classic presentation. The tobacco in the tin has a perfect moisture level. This belnd packs and burns brilliantly. Burns down to a nice ash. It does not require much attention and burns nice and cool if you take your time with it. As I memtioned, this blend is her VA forward. Offering some great flavors of citrus, caramel, hay, earth and a nice spice. The Turkish tobacco adds complexity by giving the blend some herbal and pepper nots and a nice perfume essence. The very subtle Latikia provide depth with a haunting presence of smokieness and sharpness. This is a wonderful morning blend with a light roast coffee or a cup of tea. I find this to be a good smoke for reading or that mundane morning commute to work.

Not bad blend from Dunhill, easy to pack, lit, one relight, no tongue bite, dry smoke. Will i buy again ? Yes i will buy Dunhill Baby Bottom mixture. Same strength and flavor, but more deep with a lot of more complexity.

I was lucky to find this Turkey in a local tobacco shop. Normally all we can find are aromatics. I am a new smoker and I would like to evaluate this from a beginner's point of view.
The tin note is very nice, It doesnt smell fruity. There is a nice smoky smell from Latakia, which reminds me of the my favourite scotch - Talisker. The moisture level is right, I smoked with right out of the tin. I could definetely taste the Latakia and all though there isnt a very high amount. It has a very nice balanced taste. It is a good tobacco to switch from aromatics to non aromatics. It is good for beginners too you can easily finish a bowl in 3-4 lights.
My only complaint is the nicotine level. It's not mild but I wish it was a little bit stronger.
Overall, not the best but a good choice for an all day smoke.

I really like the Dunhill tobaccos that I've had so far and this is no exception. At times it is ever so slightly sweet with hints of pepperiness. To me the Latakia is really light and stays in the background. The blend seems, at least to me, to burn quicker than most, although it doesn't burn hot. I've had no tongue bite at all and I am a quick puffer by nature. I really enjoy this any time of the day but I am curious about the regular Standard Mixture and will try it next for a true comparison review. The nicotine level is minimal and tends to be just right, consistently. I'm glad I tried it, as it was an enjoyable experience.

Currently I find Dunhill to be one of my two "go to" brands. (Mac Baren, oddly, the second) However, I felt a bit disappointed by this offering. The light was harsh & sour on my palate. Then, once the pangs subsided from getting the bowl started I could settle in to smoke. And waited.... This mixture is mild, almost bland until the last half to third of the bowl. I kept awaiting the arrival of Latakia, only to catch a faint whisper, "I'll be there in a minute", here and there. The Virginias aren't sweet. They're like your second cousin at the family reunion. In the room, but they have nothing to say.
Perhaps the best description for this mixture is an analogy of an old worn out hound dog. When you first arrive it tries to snarl viciously, then, flops down on the back porch & goes back to sleep. In the end, you're just glad it doesn't try to hump your leg.

As an ARO smoker, this was one of those excursions, and experiments into English blends. Now I'm spoiled! This is complex. and has lots of different flavors that really keep this interesting to the bottom of the bowl. I've been using it as my after dinner treat tobacco, and just can't wait to finish dinner, to load this into a pipe, and light it up. This is a great blend, and a really good place to start for those who are interested in trying an English, without being overwhelmed. this will be one of those that I will be coming back to again.

This is a good blend. Let it get dry, if you try to smoke it straight from a new tin, then it will smoke wet, hot, and bite your tounge. I have had this tin open for several months, and it is nearing its end.
When I first smoked this blend, it was way too moist. It didnt smoke well, and tasted tart.
However, now that its got a bit of age and time to dry out it has developed into something very nice. The latakia aspect is there, but it is really a sweet smoke. It is similar to early morning pipe, but with a much sweeter flavor. It also has a bit of a fresh hay taste and smell that is quite nice. The orientals are also pretty dominant in the flavor.
The blend is a well balanced mild english blend. It has a lot of flavor, but none of the flavors are very powerful like in heavier english blends.
Worth a try!

Known as Standard Mixture Mellow this blend is a very nice English Mixture.... I appreciate it a lot since it has a mellow taste... very nice for any pipe smoker, mainly those ones who enjoy soft tobaccos. Give it a try if you didn't smoke it yet... 😀
