The grassy, mildly citrusy Virginia has a touch of earth as it forms the base of the blend. The Cyprian latakia is a little smoky, woody, and lightly sweet as a team player. The dry woody Oriental had a hint of spice in the background. The nic-hit is rather mild. Can burn a little warm and offer a cigarette hit if puffed fast, but it burns reasonable well with a consistent flavor. Needs few relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. Has a decent after taste and stronger room note. There's not a ton of complexity or strength here, but it's not designed to give you that. I'd say it's more for those starting on English blends, so don't expect the latakia or the Orientals to hit you between the eyes.

I just finished a tin of “Standard Mixture Mellow” and I've decided to not be a slacker and actually post the review pronto. Or at least the morning after! This is an excellent blend which shouldn't come as a surprise coming from the latest iteration of Dunhill. That it just missed my sweet spot because it is a very light latakia blend. English/latakia blends are my favorite. SMM had a touch of smoky latakia but not enough for me to buy again. I found this markedly lighter than EMP, 965, Nightcap and London Mixture. An excellent blend but a tad too light in Vitamin L for me! Enjoy!

Opening the can, I found the sweet, dried fruit aroma quite appealing. I then wondered if this was indeed an English blend. It was reminiscent of the esoterica blend, Dorchester, which is a Virginia and perique blend. I could barely detect the aroma of latakia, but I packed my L.J. Peretti "Rodney" prince, which is designated for English blends, and said "here goes nothing." This blend is anything but mellow. The Virginia and the Turkish are at the forefront and flavorful, with the Latakia just slightly on the finish, but seemingly absent from the room note. The small bowl of my beloved Peretti prince had me wanting more, so I switched pipes. I filled my Savinelli 906 EX Baronet Bruyere, a much larger pipe, and the experience was intensified. This pipe is also designated for English blends, and the 3 inch tall bowl allowed the very faint condiment of Latakia to reveal itself marvelously, without minimizing the richness of the Virginia and Turkish. A larger bowl certainly allows this blend to develop, and it is very satisfying. For those who require a heavy English, this might not be your blend, but with pipe smoking, as you all know, patience and contemplation are key. The Latakia is there. Seek and yes shall find.

This is a very interesting English blend. This blend smokes much more like a Virginia blend that a English. The packaging has a simplistic but classic presentation. The tobacco in the tin has a perfect moisture level. This belnd packs and burns brilliantly. Burns down to a nice ash. It does not require much attention and burns nice and cool if you take your time with it. As I memtioned, this blend is her VA forward. Offering some great flavors of citrus, caramel, hay, earth and a nice spice. The Turkish tobacco adds complexity by giving the blend some herbal and pepper nots and a nice perfume essence. The very subtle Latikia provide depth with a haunting presence of smokieness and sharpness. This is a wonderful morning blend with a light roast coffee or a cup of tea. I find this to be a good smoke for reading or that mundane morning commute to work.

Not bad blend from Dunhill, easy to pack, lit, one relight, no tongue bite, dry smoke. Will i buy again ? Yes i will buy Dunhill Baby Bottom mixture. Same strength and flavor, but more deep with a lot of more complexity.

I was lucky to find this Turkey in a local tobacco shop. Normally all we can find are aromatics. I am a new smoker and I would like to evaluate this from a beginner's point of view.

The tin note is very nice, It doesnt smell fruity. There is a nice smoky smell from Latakia, which reminds me of the my favourite scotch - Talisker. The moisture level is right, I smoked with right out of the tin. I could definetely taste the Latakia and all though there isnt a very high amount. It has a very nice balanced taste. It is a good tobacco to switch from aromatics to non aromatics. It is good for beginners too you can easily finish a bowl in 3-4 lights.

My only complaint is the nicotine level. It's not mild but I wish it was a little bit stronger.

Overall, not the best but a good choice for an all day smoke.

As an ARO smoker, this was one of those excursions, and experiments into English blends. Now I'm spoiled! This is complex. and has lots of different flavors that really keep this interesting to the bottom of the bowl. I've been using it as my after dinner treat tobacco, and just can't wait to finish dinner, to load this into a pipe, and light it up. This is a great blend, and a really good place to start for those who are interested in trying an English, without being overwhelmed. this will be one of those that I will be coming back to again.

This is a good blend. Let it get dry, if you try to smoke it straight from a new tin, then it will smoke wet, hot, and bite your tounge. I have had this tin open for several months, and it is nearing its end.

When I first smoked this blend, it was way too moist. It didnt smoke well, and tasted tart.

However, now that its got a bit of age and time to dry out it has developed into something very nice. The latakia aspect is there, but it is really a sweet smoke. It is similar to early morning pipe, but with a much sweeter flavor. It also has a bit of a fresh hay taste and smell that is quite nice. The orientals are also pretty dominant in the flavor.

The blend is a well balanced mild english blend. It has a lot of flavor, but none of the flavors are very powerful like in heavier english blends.

Worth a try!

Known as Standard Mixture Mellow this blend is a very nice English Mixture.... I appreciate it a lot since it has a mellow taste... very nice for any pipe smoker, mainly those ones who enjoy soft tobaccos. Give it a try if you didn't smoke it yet... 😀

This review is of the Orlik version.

I like mild (or "mellow") light English tobaccos as a first pipe of the day and SMM fits that bill. The Latakia is very much in the background. The Orientals are forward with some nice sweetness from the Virginias. In all, SMM is a nice blend in this category, burning to a fine ash and smoking cool. I'm putting some more away from cellaring. Recommended.
