SMM seems to be a much lighter version of the standard mixture. This blend is ready to smoke right out of the tin, the moisture level was just right for me. YMMV. All in all, I must say that this is a very nice blend, just too much on the light side for my taste. I think this would be a great starting point for someone just getting into this type of blend. If you like a heavy dose of nicotine, then do not even bother with this one, it would bore you to death. The high quality of the tobacco is there, of course its a Dunhill we are talking of here. Smokes down to a fine ash at the bottom of the bowl. Lights up easily enough and stays lit with little effort. Overall, I recommend it for those wanting to get into this type of blend and weren't sure where to start.

As others have said, this 'mellow' version of the Standard Mixture is rather bland and disappointing. Not as good as EMP or Standard Mixture, and certainly not as good as many other lighter English blends on the market. Has a slightly 'dirty' background note. I might have expected some sweetness, but that's not evident in this blend. Rather a disappointment, and I won't be buying this one again.

This is just a classy classic all day English tobacco. It burns well, smokes clean. It has a nice diversity with all the notable parts coming through save the Latakia. The latakia just hides and makes this a delicious blend. The burn is quite kind to the pipe bowl and shank too. No glop!

I smoke it every day.

10/21/2013 Well, something has happened. From 1997 to 2005 I smoked Dunhill Standard Mild Mixture and I loved it. Something has changed. They call it Mellow Mixture now and over the past 8 years I have dodged it as you couldn't get it and then they come out with Mellow. I don't know why this happens, but someone else is making AGAIN and it is not the same. I will finish this can, but no more. Too many other great tobaccos to smoke.

Next up on my taste-em-before-they-are-gone trip is Mellow Mixture. This English blend was in fact quite mellow in intensity, seeming to spend more time in the state of Virginia. The tin aroma did have noticeable Latakia, a tiny bit of Oriental, and plenty of sour grassy notes to tame things down.

The cut is very fine with a perfect moisture level fresh from the tin, making a product that lit instantly. The smoke was very dry and fell between mild and medium on the harshness spectrum (low nicotine as well). It certainly was English, just not very pronounced.

The blend isn't bad, certainly mellow, just kinda boring.

I suckered myself again into trying another one of these dismal STG Dunhill blends but, this one isn't so bad. The Standard Mixture series seem to me to be the better reincarnations probably due to their more simplistic compositions compared to other Dunhill blends. Unfortunately, upon opening the tin one is greeted with a not so natural smell that reminds me of wintergreen mouthwash; This is definitely some additive. I'm noticing this sort of thing more these days with cased virginias in english blends from European manufacturers that have a similar "air" about them. It subtly comes through in the smoke early on but more so diminishes with time. This is a light english where the base virginias are forward leaving the condimental elements farther in the background as seasoning. Actually, the turkish was just behind the virginias making it's presence known most of the time which I found what was most appealing to my taste. The latakia added hints of dark richness of coarse. And there was a bit of that harsher element from the not so well matured stoved red virginias more prominent in other Dunhill mixtures... oh, well. Despite being labeled "Mellow" it could be perceived as actually stronger than STM, being more virginia forward with lower condimental tobaccos that otherwise can cool a smoke and lower nicotine as was the case with the earlier Murray's versions. If it wasn't for the "green mouthwash" scent I might have stocked up on this in hopes of improvement with years of aging.

This is a very mild ... er, I guess now that's "mellow," blend. I think this would be a good blend if an aromatics smoker wanted to get a hint of what an English-style blend is like. If you've been away from pipe smoking for a while, this is a fine blend to get you back into the hobby. So I recommend it for those purposes.

Govern Yourself Accordingly.

Recommended for 'light' smokers, only. I cannot imagine that *this* is Standard Mixture medium's toned down version! It's very light, yogurtish, actually unnoticable. Yet, the tobaccos used here are first class. Added a pinch of Nightcap and a good pinch of 965 to give it a bit more life. Probably won't buy this again, though it is not bad, just too mild for my taste. 2.5 of 5.

This blend just isn't doing it for me. I understand it is supposed to be light, but it is almost nonexistent. I feel like I am wasting time when I am smoking this, rather than enjoying the experience. I muscled through my 2 oz. in 3 months and will not replace. I do give it two stars for the quality of leaf and absence of any chemicals that I can detect and I can see that some people do like it. So YMMV, and probably will.

I smoke and review a lot of tobaccos, but I always return to Dunhill as it's my main brand of choice, Murray's for some and Orlik for others. Standard Mixture Mild (Mellow), is one that I just can't seem to latch onto. Most Dunhill blends have a nice kick from Lady N and the tobacco is always of high quality and that is the case with SMM. It's the blend itself that just doesn't work. The flavors are simply too flat. It burns cleanly, packs easily blah, blah, blah, but in a word, it's boring. This review is based on my only two remaining tins of the Murray's incarnation. The age on the tins hasn't added much to the flavor. I have purchased two new Orlik tins and when I finally open one, I will update the review if warranted.

I find this a bit too mild for my liking, even EMP and Skiff are stronger than this (on the Lat side).

I got to try this with the re-introduction of Dunhill blends in England, and I bought this without looking at the contents. That done, it does pack and light easily and burns all the way down without a messy dottle. For someone trying Latakia / English blends for the first time, this might be a winner. Vitamin N content is almost negligable which for me is another dissapointment, on the plus side, a good quality leaf is used (or IMHO, wasted) but still two stars as previously stated, good for those starting out on Latakia or English forrays.
