Peterson Nightcap

(3.46)
A rich blend of Virginia, Oriental, and Latakia tobaccos, intended to be smoked late in the day. It's a smoky, delightfully satisfying mixture, with a hint of Perique added to enhance the bouquet.
Notes: Formerly known as Dunhill Nightcap, STG has changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

I thought this was very good. It had a pleasant flavor, very good burning qualities and a very smooth tobacco taste. The only problem for me (which may not be a problem for most other smokers), was the high nicotine content. It gave me far more of a buzz than I bargained for. I plan to smoke this on those days that need to be forgotten. Definitely reccomend to try.

This is the first tinned tobacco I have ever smoked. I purchased it along with two other Dunhill blends to break in a new churchwarden, and begin to dabble in cellaring. I was pleasantly suprised by the aroma when I first opened the tin, and found the texture to be wonderful. It packed nicely, and though I had a little trouble getting the bowl to light, it did not go out through the entire course of my smoke. I thought the flavor was quite good, and particularly enjoyed the aroma of the blend. I had a hard time imagining how a blend could be stereotyped for and "evening" smoke, but after trying it with a cup of tea before bed, I now look forward to the pleasure of retiring with it again in the future. Four stars

If you are a fan of strong smokey blends, give Nightcap a try. I was not prepared for exactly what this blend is like in terms of strength, and it packs quite a whallop for someone who was giving a shot to a non-aromatic for the first time. I think that if I was to develop a taste for Latakia blends, I might come back to this one sometime, but if you are not a big fan of Latakia I would not suggest buying this blend.

I must admit, I was a bit nervous trying this tobacco first off. I thought id break out in sweats or something, but I am happy to report, I tried it and dashed my opinions on the rocks of truth...

This tobacco is not bad. It's rich, long lasting, full and smoky. Its a tobacco for under the stars.

I loaded up my stanwell Lord Churchwarden, and happily puffed away, enjoying the latakia, and tasting the subtle perique... fantastic.

It could use a little more perique IMHO...

I have to be honest though, this is an extremely latakia dominated blend - not for the faint hearted, and not a daily smoker for me. This is more of a treat, for those nights when my cravings WILL be quenched - by hook, crook or by nightcap!

UPDATE _ JANUARY 2006

Still a bit too strong for me everyday - but fascinatingly, the tin ive had opened for a year now, still hasnt dried out and ruined itself! Amazing!

Still far too much latakia for me - less lat, more Perique and this would be breathtaking!

5 out of 10

This is my first review here on tr.com and I'm honored that it could be on this great blend! Now I'm not too sure about how old this tin was (it has the white seal on it like the one pictured on this website does) but boy was it good!

Lighting: I use the Frank method of packing and this apparently led to very few relights of this great tobacco (2-3 relights).

Taste: A very rich smokey flavor, the latakia comes out with both guns a blazin' (which i'm very found of).

Smell: I never can really smell the smoke while i'm smoking it for some odd reason but I could detect a very rich tone while smoking this.

Room Note: I have had non-smokers tell me that this smelled like barbecue pork and I do consider it to be somewhat pleasant.

Bottom Line: If you LOVE latakia, then this is the blend for you. If, however, you are just develing in to English blends or just started smoking "for real" then I'd probably try something like 965 before you "kick it up a notch." Perfect score.

This is my first review and I am nowhere near as sophisticated as many of you, but here goes.

I smoked a pipe 15 years ago, almost exclusively Captain Black. I am back and of course started back where I left off, but wanted to experiment as I figure I am more sopphstacted myself now.

Being used to over the counters, this was a shock! Not a bad bad shock, just TOTALLY different than anything I have tried before.

It is my first Euro blend, and I decided to try it based on al of your reviews.

Keep in mind I am used to CB. Opening the tin I was disappointed. It smelled medicinal, almost like surgical tape, but hey, I decided to try it and try it I would.

It lights well and has a nice smoke. It is smooth and had no bite, but what an unusal flavor? Hard to desribe, but it realy tasted earthy. Reinded me of being outdoors.

The further I went down the bowl, the more I liked it. It is a nice difference from the CB. It was my first experience, but I look forward to my next. Perhaps it will refine my palat.

Speaking of palat, it does leave a very pleasant aftertaste. Some of the others I have had leave a bad aftertaste or leathery palat. Not here.

It was enjoyable and look forward to sampling and reviewing any other blends. Just my opinions, but I hope you have found it helpful! Thanks for having me.

So far I've smoked two bowls of Nightcap. This is the first English blend I've smoked, and so far I've enjoyed it. It doesn't really have much of a flavour, but was a very pleasant and powerful smoke. This will leave you spinning if you smoke too much of it. I'd suggest that it should be smoked slowly, or in a small bowl or in half bowls at first. Nightcap made me feel nice and relaxed and mellow while I was smoking it, and it was accompanied perfectly by a tall cool gin and tonic. I recommend it, but with a warning to be wary of its potency.

What hasn't been written about this blend that remains to be written? Perhaps nothing, but as a lover of Nightcap I cannot help but chime in with my two bits.

Nightcap is truly a complex blend. Open the tin (or the bag) and you're beckoned by a strong aroma at times smoky, at times peppery, at times earthy - pack it in your pipe and prepare for a delicious experience. One moment you're being soothed by perique, another time being rewarded with the perfect amount of latakia - kept down to earth with the Virginia. I am a perique fan (been known to smoke it straight at times), and it is used well to lift this blend to a higher plateau.

This is a serious tobacco, and highly recommended - it is a true blend, made carefully and lovingly in order to provide you with an out-of-this-world evening with your pipe.

3 stars will be the right evaluation for the present Nightcap, the fourth is for the sweet memories it brings back to me. When I was 14 this has been the first tobacco I ever smoked! My dad smoked Amphora blends, but I didn't like the room note they leaved around, so I started buying Dunhills and Balkan Sobranie for him; he tried them but still liked Amphora better! So, eventually, I started smoking the tins I was buying, Nightcap being the very first. After 20 years, I can remember so clearly for the punch this blend gave me to let me know it was a blend for well grown smokers. And it still is, strong and penetrating, full as I like tobaccos to be, though it has worsened and become duller.... but I like it the same!

Another Dunhill tobacco with a reputation of great strength. People say they have to sit down to smoke it, but I don't really find this to be the case. I've had my share of nicotine poisoning (the first time I tried a tin of Three Nuns in the late seventies, I had to stop mid-bowl), but I'm an irregular smoker without any steady intake of nicotine to make me inured to its effects, and I love this stuff! Whatever its nicotine content, it is not strong in the sense of being prone to biting your tongue, oh no, this is smooth and delicious tobacco. The tin opens with a rich scent that I've smelled before - I was given a sampler of five Sobranie tobaccos in 1980, and one of them was the exact replica of the tin aroma of Nightcap. Was it No.759? I can't say now - from that sampler I fell in love with the Sobranie and smoked it exclusively for a long time. The aroma is rather chocolatey - though that of bitter dark chocolate. It lights easily, stays lit after a gentle tamping, and produces good volumes of smoke. The perique is apparent towards the end of the bowl, but is not intrusive. I really could smoke Nightcap all day, were I permitted to smoke anything all day (but that's another story!) I don't know it from years ago, so I can't comment on whether it has changed from better to worse in the hands of different blenders. I can say the current stock is splendid as it is. Highly recommended.
