Peterson My Mixture 965
(3.18)
Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados.
Notes: From its inception and until 1981, it was produced by Dunhill of London.Production was then transferred to Murrays in Belfast who like Dunhill were owned by Carreras Rothmans. Murrays produced it until late 2004 when BAT, who by that time had taken over Rothmans International, closed the Belfast factory.
Since then it has been produced by Orlik, Denmark, part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group.
Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame Inductee.
Formerly known as Dunhill My Mixture 965, STG bought the rights to some Dunhill blends and changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

One of My top five. An English that I can smoke all day/I don't believe there are many of those, as some are numbing, and some, although good, just wear Me out after a bowl or two. Perhaps the lack of latakia is the reason, although present in this one, is much in the background. A superb english that I dedicated a Peterson 'spigot' to.

This is probably one of the most known blends out there. The first time I smoked this I had to pack another bowl right after the first one. Even thought I smoke less of it now it still accounts as one of my favorites. The room aroma is the only thing that I dont like about this blend. Next time you find yourself at your tobacconist and dont know what to pick, just grab a tin of this stuff. You really cant go wrong with it.

965 doesn't really need another review, but since it is a staple of my tobacco diet, I feel the need. I consider this to be the model English blend from pouch aroma to room note to taste. It is a great place to start for someone interested in trying a classic Balkan style blend. Though it is spicy and arguably Dunhill's strongest blend - there is not a finer way to experience the exotic spiciness of Oriental tobacco seasoned with high quality Latakia. The cavendish (I believe it is unsweetened / unflavored) really brings it all together and allows the tobaccos to successfully marry together and hold consistenly from the first bowl to the last - even if you buy it by the pound!

This was the second English mixture I ever tried, the first being McClelland?s Frog Morton. Needless to say, it was a bit of a shock. The two have little in common, in terms of taste. 965 packs a big nicotine punch, and I found it to be too strong for my tastes. About a year later, having tried a couple dozen other English mixtures, I gave 965 another try. I assumed that my initial reaction was the result of being a newbie to the world of Latakia blends. I enjoyed it more than I had initially. However, I still find it to be stronger in the nicotine department than most other English blends I had tried (except for other Dunhill blends). It has a certain ?peppery? quality that I don?t really care for. It is a fine blend, but far from my first choice in an English blend. If I am going to smoke a Dunhill blend, I much prefer the smoothness of London Mixture or the richness of Durbar, or the unique taste of Nightcap.
I have to respectfully disagree with those who proclaim 965 to be the definitive English blend by which all others must be judged. 965 may well be the best-selling English blend, and in many smokers? opinion the best-tasting English blend, but that doesn?t make it the definitive English blend. Call me a purist, but in my opinion the use of cavendish in this blend disqualifies it from meeting the classic definition of an English blend (i.e. a blend that epitomizes the definition of classic English smoking mixture?a Virginia base with Latakia and perhaps other orientals added). If you want to taste a truly definitive English mixture, try Gawith?s Squadron Leader, Robert Lewis? Tree Mixture, Pease?s Renaissance, Esoterica?s Margate, or perhaps even Dunhill?s London Mixture; if you want to taste one of the most popular and best-selling English mixtures around today, then give 965 a spin.

A classic latakia-rich, full-flavored English blend. For a period of 7-8 years I smoked nothing but My Mixture 965 and Balkan Sobranie (which is sadly no longer available). While I now like to try new tobaccos on a fairly regular basis, 965 remains the standard to which I compare other blends, and the tobacco I reach for when I either can't decide on what to smoke or don't want to be surprised. It's also very consistent from one tin to another, readily available at most smoke shops, and not as expensive as some "designer" English blends.

Very good go to tobacco. It is quite mild, but still is able to satisfy.

Whoa! Gents! I'm still dog-paddling my way through my very first tin of #965 but already know it will likely be my last. Whew! This blend is not at all for your typical sane piper, Lads. This is for the guy who eats live bearmeat and makes his Manhattens with bourbon & gasoline. Aiii Carumba! Am sure the Dunhill quality is there and that there are several of you Jedi around who dote on this hyper-warp weed but that doesn't make it a national heartthrob by any means. Will give it 1 star but only because I'm afraid to anger it. Lawd ha' Mercy!

Until I tried 965, I thought that Nightcap was the quintessential Dunhill English blend. I found 965 to be slightly sweeter, less heavy on the latakia, and more complex than the Nightcap, but still more full than Early Morning Pipe. I really like this blend and will always keep a tin on hand for Saturday afternoons--I'll save the Nightcap for post-large-dinner puffing with a glass of port ala a nice Honduran Hoyo Excalibur or Cuban Cohiba Robusta.

What to say about this. It is a benchmark tobacco. Does not bite, taste is delicous and good for an all-day smoke. Leaves only grey ashes in the bowl. It is one of the 2 Dunhill-tobaccos that is for sale in the shops in the Netherlands. I always have a tin opened!

This one is the perfect example of a good all around, "all day-every day" smoke. Personally, I prefer stronger tobaccos so, I find this blend only somewhat pleasing to my nicotine cravings; this may change with time. However, I will say that the taste is excellent and a shining example of the Dunhill flavor. It holds a good, full flavor without being too rich; and the Orientals truly add the high point to the taste without being too sweet or overpowering. While I don't find this to be my personal #1 favorite, the flavor alone keeps my respect and a place on my shelf. I don't have a tin of this now but it is good enough for me to give it the top rating.
