Peterson My Mixture 965

(3.18)
Peterson's My Mixture 965 is for the connoisseurs of full bodied tobacco. Choicest small latakia imparts a rich nutty flavor and coolness. Macedonia bright is added for sweetness. Brown cavendish completes this blend beloved by English mixture aficionados.
Notes: From its inception and until 1981, it was produced by Dunhill of London.Production was then transferred to Murrays in Belfast who like Dunhill were owned by Carreras Rothmans. Murrays produced it until late 2004 when BAT, who by that time had taken over Rothmans International, closed the Belfast factory. Since then it has been produced by Orlik, Denmark, part of the Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Pipe Tobacco Hall of Fame Inductee. Formerly known as Dunhill My Mixture 965, STG bought the rights to some Dunhill blends and changed the brand name from "Dunhill" to "Peterson".

EU version. A bowl of 965 is a pleasant experience.

Start: I enjoy the initial start-up of every bowl I smoke. Mix 965 was rather disappointing in this regard. If you?re an occasional nasal sipper the first few puffs of the bowl is not the time for that. 965 will sting your nose with an ashy bite. Nothing special or unique is noticed at this stage. Having said that lets move on?

Mid-Bowl: Wow. What a difference! At this point 965 comes into its own and delivers its merits. A tasty English with a smooth smoky note. Go ahead take a sniff at this stage?its lovely.

Finish: No real notable changes for me just a good smoke. An occasional ashy flavor can enter in from time to time.

English blend with a little sweetness, this could be a good morning bowl. But I probably won't keep a lot of this around for the ashy notes distract...nevertheless less a very decent smoke.

Update: The ashyness must have been from the pipe I smoked it in for I had a much more pleasant experience in a different pipe.

Alfred Dunhill blended My Mixture 965 for E.A. Baxter, Esq., sometime before 1910. By the 1920s, it was one of the most famous English blends around, often advertised in Dunhill's catalogs as its finest tobacco.

It is indeed a noteworthy blend--rich, creamy, smooth, and cool-burning. It pack easily and requires few relights. The individual elements merge beautifully, and I find it a very pleasant English indeed. It is also unique; whether you're sniffing the tin or enjoying its room note, 965 is unmistakable in its character. Only afterwards does one notice its strong nicotine jolt. Newbies beware!

Is it the greatest English mixture of all time? I don't think so. But it is certainly a great pipe tobacco, and, with some of the C&D Englishes, at the top of my list when I'm in the mood for latakia.

My first time with 965 was with a strong cup of coffee, 5.30 in the AM, watching the snow fall thru the window of my cabin, now its my early morn smoke on the way to work, or hunting , fishing or just because. love that full flavor.

YUCK!! Crash and Burn! Nothing like the Dunhill of old. I couldnot believe this is the 965 I had smoked on a regular basis years ago. No richness in taste I onced remembered from this ol favorite. I give it 2 stars only for what it used to be. Sorry, but its a prop airplane wanting to be a JET.

Very, very nice. My first enjoyable English. Just finished a bowl of Nightcap (not good, couldn't keep it lit, bad finish) and thought "Let's try my new tin of MM965". Wow, what flavor, intensity. Creamy? Not to me. This is a wonderful combination of intense flavor, sweet on the tongue, keeps lit, wonderful smoke, just great. I think this is the best of my short tobacco career. My Savinelli just loves this blend! Highly recommended for all newcomers.

A memorable blend, but not for good reason- I wonder what variety of Cavendish it is that Dunhill?s successors use for this blend, American or English. It would surprise me none were I to learn that it is American, in which case, Blaaahhh!

This blend has a following- indeed some of my friends- but I for one can do without it ever again. I recommend this blend to the pipe smoker who enjoys English Aromatics that produce copious amounts of thick black perfumey smoke, but it is not a blend for me.

While it's far too dull to earn a spot in my rotation, I would recommended 965 to others looking for a smooth and very smokable English blend that pleases without being even remotely overwhelming.

Let me start by saying that I love Latakia, very much. Also, I was a cigar smoker before I became a pipe smoker and tend to seek stronger flavors. The Dunhill 965 I have been smoking is the bulk variety, not the tin. I enjoy the cavendish flavors, but always long for more latakia. This blend seems to be a good marriage of the two. However, to really enjoy this blend, one must "sip" it so to speak. The subtlety is there, if you are careful about how aggressively you smoke it. No problems with moisture. The aroma is what I think of as a classic pipe arome. The taste is full and creamy on the tongue. I get the sensation of drinking a Cafe-Au-Lait when I smoke this blend. I would recommend this blend to anyone who likes subtle sweetness with a nice subtle latakia smokiness. Will definitely make this a regular blend, and will buy the tin, instead of the bulk, when I run out of my bulk mixsture. 3 out of four stars.

This blend is something of an enigma for myself. Upon opening the tin my nose is overwhelmed by a full peat-like aroma intermixed with what seems to be like burning charcoal (I assume this is the latakia I have read so much about here)-The tin smell reminds me of an autumn evening with coal fires burning in the distance, unfortunately this is where the romanticism ends. Three lights are required to get this lit and the start is a bit labour intensive although it burns better as the bowl progresses.

Thick clouds of strong bluish smoke arise from the tobacco, but strong should not be read pejoratively as it is rather pleasant and enjoyed by nonsmokers I have been around. I do not know why but whilst smoking this the back of my throat develops a 'tickle' early on that becomes more aggravted as the bowl progresses and it can also be a touch hot if puffed too rigourously.

I really wanted to like this blend but it just does not agree with my mouth which becomes irritated by 965, even more so upon a relight. I find the smoke to be really quite harsh and unrefined. Moreover this leaves an unpleasnat aftertaste in the mouth as if one had been sucking on a piece of coal for half an hour.

Undoubtedly this is a fine mix but I wish the tin aroma translated into the smoke produced. To be sure this packs a nicotine wallop as I felt slightly dizzy and sedated afterward, as if I had had a little too much to drink-a rather pleasant feeling! I will probably finish the tin but will be unlikely to buy it again-while not for me this may be ideal for a cigarette smoker who wants to gravitate towards a pipe. About 5.5/10

I just don't "get" this blend. Despite excellent reviews this tobacco seems very flat and one dimensional. I can't seem to acquire a taste for it and having tried multiple times with several pipes, I am giving up on it.

I give it 2 stars out of respect for the many other, more experienced smokers who love it. Just goes to prove that not everyone's palate is created equal.
