Davidoff Scottish Mixture

(2.54)
Scottish Mixture’s smooth, flavorful and mild middle-cut blend is enduringly popular. The fresh and delicately flowery aroma comes from select grades of Virginia, burley, Kentucky and a small portion of Oriental tobaccos – refined with a dash of the finest Scotch whisky.

Agreeable but underwhelming.

I can find little to criticize here. Alas, I can't find much to praise, either.

First, the praise: the aroma, both in the tin and in the fragrant clouds it creates, is very nice indeed.

It is also, however, a bit mild for me, and its casing causes it to overheat a bit quickly.

All in all perfectly pleasant, and utterly unremarkable.

I found the whiskey taste limited, but present, the oriental is a classy touch, but unfortunately it does have a soapy danish style casing taste to it....a shame, perhaps it's coming from the oriental and not flavor enhancers but a bit disappointing from a major tobacco company. Worth a try if you like whiskey blends.

I really like this blend. The smell out of the tin is fantastic, it packs and lights easily, and stays lit. I did not get any tongue bite whatsoever with this blend, and it smokes all the way down to the end of the bowl with a fine grey ash.

One thing I LOVE about it though, is the sweet taste you get mid- bowl. I sip this slow in a church warden, and the flavors really shine when smoked gently. And that sweet taste I talked about earlier is simply fantastic. Nice cool, sweet smoke.

I don't care about the room note as I smoke this to please myself, and it pleases me just fine.

A quite decent blend, I would use this as an all day smoke, nice on the palate, hard to keep lit sometimes, but other than that I really enjoy it. Nice on the palate good flavor, needs a little rubbing out but thats half the fun sometimes. I definitely recommend this to a beginner, due to the fact that it has almost no bite at all, and it doesn't make a mess in your pipe. I think three stars is well deserved.

(Edit June 2, 2016) Its been six years since I've had this blend. I would say that this was my first really good tobacco. It was my first tinned tabac, that's for sure. Anyway, six years later, I am missing this blend...The aroma was so unique and the top notes of "Scotch" combined with all of the other flavor profiles were so singularly...special. Maybe it's nostalgia that makes this blend seem better than it might be, as it reminds me of great times, but I just remember finding such pleasure in this blend.

Wonderful mixture of quality tobaccos, being Virginia and Burley the main components, lightly spiced with Orientals and a definite but mild touch of whiskey. Very little tongue bite, great burning qualities and a mellow taste that's neither sweet nor bitter due to a perfect balance. Scotish mixtures are vaguely defined in the world of pipes, but when I think of this category, Davidoff's is the most representative in my mind.

Although I know some smokers may cringe, I prefer this blend in a corncob and with a Guinness Extra Stout. It claims to have a taist of Scotch, but as a single malt lover, I beg to differ. The flavering is by no means unpleasent, but a far cry from resembling scotch.

The ribbon cut is easy to pack and lite, and doesn't need airing/drying before shuving in and stricking your flint! It burns cool with no bite. I have been smoking this blend out on the lake in windy conditions with no stove cover, and hasn't burned through. You'd think ribbon would burn hotter, but not here.

I've used two tins, but have two more aging in my stash.

I first ran across Davidoff Scottish Mixture on a trip to Dublin in 2001. I did not bring any pipes or tobacco because one of the first items on the list was to go to the Peterson store across from the University and buy a new Peterson. I have always loved their pipes, owned several, and thought it would be a real treat to buy one at the Peterson shop. I had a great time and ended up buying two new Petersons, a Strand and a Deerstalker which is to this day the favorite of my 35 pipes.

The salesman asked if I needed tobacco and I asked what he recommended and without hesitation he pointed out the Davidoff Scottish Mixture and told me that this was his favorite pipe tobacco. Well, since they carried the entire line of Peterson's tobacco and he was recommending this one instead, I figured I would try it. I also knew Davidoff Cigars and find them quite good.

This is my favorite tobacco. It has a very pleasant taste and the best room note ever. It is not an over powering aromatic. Not saccarine sweet nor woodsy. Hard to describe. But even hours and days later, when most room note has degenerated to "ashtray" smell, this one smells just as pleasant. It is the only tobacco I smoke indoors.

I have a seven day rotation of my pipes and dedicate pipes to specific tobaccos. I rotate through a number of different tobaccos which I enjoy. This is the only tobacco with seven dedicated pipes (the seven best of my 15 Peterson's). I smoke it daily.

This Scottish Mixture by Davidoff has been on the market for some time because I first bought it 30 years ago. I remember it then said on the tin: "Made in Holland"(where I live as well) so it could have been made by Niemeyer. Who produces it now I cannot tell. The mixture is about the same as then (although all tobacco's were rather better in the old days) with the same whisky and chocolate/coffee notes, and very tasty for that matter. Indeed, the cut does resemble Plumcake but from there on, the two are worlds apart. This is much smoother on the palate and burns rather better, whereas Plumcake is a biter if you're not careful. I do recommend this fine mixture to lovers of a quality aromatic. Rob.

I got this opened tin that was some years stored at the local shop as a taster. When opening I found one of those humidifying stones inside the paper wrapper the tobacco was pretty dried out however. Hardly any smell coming out of it and from the price tag I could tell a difference of some euros so that tin must’ve been open for 3-4 years at least. Wasn’t crunchy nevertheless so I decided to give it a shot expecting not much from the slightly sour loafy wooden smell that was there. The look of a darker mixture cut containing some longer ribbons also so I decided to grab a wider bowl to leave it some space also I was afraid of smoking it too hot.

Took me a while to get solid ambers but then burned slowly and even with one or two relightings. Decent sweetness with warm roasting aroma and subtle nutty notes starting a then some subtle flowery flavors combine into that leaving me surprised. No flavoring or sauce detectable for me all flavors are provided by the tobacco that’s used. I guess that scotch flavor is gone over time. For the second third the whole character is going a bit into a smoky direction but hitting back with that warm nutty bread loaf taste soon. Retro nasal a bit like cake or cookies with hay and floral notes. Sweetness is decreasing wooden and some sour tones take over then restarting with warm roasted flavors and repeating with spicy peaks.

All in all surprisingly well aged tobacco behind a sauce that I’m not sure if it is even necessary;)

Tin note of moderately pungent, earthy sour vegetation. Tobacco is a Ready Rubbed of brown, dark brown and light brown. Moisture content is great, larger pieces may need a little rubbing. Burns moderately with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild to medium. Flavoring is very mild, with notes of Scotch whisky. Mild whisky taste on initial light and falls to the background soon after. Taste is medium and moderately consistent, with notes of mild whisky, peaty vegetation, toast, herbal floral, nutty, zesty lemon grass, spices, savory, tart sour citrus, earth, molasses, bitter orange peel, acidic, a wood and tangy dark fruit background note, and a peppery retro. Burley and Kentucky seem to by swapping the lead with Oriental/Turkish and Virginia supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.
