7 Seas (Regular): Similar to Capt’ Black but Better

The casing is very close to Captain Black but has more noticeable chocolate flavoring. The black cavendish is still the main tobacco, but the burley is more noticeable in 7 Seas than in Captain Black—adding a little nuttiness and more body to the smoke. The Virginia offers a few grassy crispy notes, but that is all. Overall, 7 Seas is a good vanilla chocolate aromatic.

First, I clarify that I am partial to Mac Baren's mixtures.

Back to the point. It is a high quality aromatic, it smokes fresh, dry, even burn. The aroma is very pleasant, very well achieved. Suitable for novices and can be enjoyed by expert smokers.

Reminds me off Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey, when it still had burley.

In this case that is not a bad thing, before I got a serious passion for pipe smoking I would smoke Borkum Riff whiskey and Hamiltons. I enjoyed it before they switched the Burley for cavendish (although I very much doubt it would live up to my current standards)

It lacks the serious flaws Borkum Riff has/had, such as it's absurdly wet smoke, extreme tongue-bite, extreme fast burning etc. In fact I find this tobacco less bitey than most Mac Baren offerings.

But it has the same flavour profile, just... better. It's nice to have it. It's close enough to Borkum to give me pipe-newbie feelings off nostalgia.

A sweet, slightly nutty taste off mild burley and vanilla sits firmly at the center. I perceive it as artificial but not bad. Like eating candy.

Less cardboard taste than from most burleys this mild & cheap. The very low price should be taken into consideration when one judges the quality off the leaf.

Chocolate notes, fruit notes and the VA will pop up from time to time. But only occassionally and fleetingly, and will require you to pay attention to find it.

The taste develops throughout the bowl but not dramatically. It gets less pleasant towards the end, when the toppings have steamed off the tobacco alone isn't enough to carry the blend. Is it low quality leaf or just poorly balanced without the toppings? I'm not sure, but the lack of cardboard taste and other overt unpleasantness tilts me towards beleiving the latter. But this might still be a blend that you prefer to stop smoking before it's all ash. This problem (which really isn't that bad, after all you never actually finish an entire cigar for example) may be mitigated by adopting a very slow smoking pace and not relighting a bunch off times.

This REALLY is an aromatic and won't come close to swaying anyone who dislikes the genre. If you're looking for Borkum Riff that doesn't suck or just a solid, non-biting aromatic with great value, it's a good option.

Right from the pouch you will be greeted with an artificial flavour of something trying to emulate vanilla. And that's what it tastes too. It's ugly, yucky and very, very artificial / chemical. If this were the only Mac Baren blend i had tasted i never ever would buy anything bearing that label again. This is a clear case for emergency emptying your pipe and tossing out the rest of the pouch.

It is as far from pleasurable as can be and in all honesty not worth risking your health for it at all.

The good things are: its mad cheap (you get what you pay for) and burns nicely. Also its very nice to your tongue.

To me it's inconceivable how it can possibly get that high a ranking here whereas truly wonderful Mac Baren blends get low ratings. Please, stay away from this blend. Smoking nothing at all is clearly better than smoking this blend.

Everyone beats up on Mac Baren about bite, ketchup smell, and so on. I rather like MacB tobaccos, and favor aromatics. I picked up all the 7 Seas blends in a sampler deal from pipesandcigars.com, so I'll be reviewing all five of them. I'm starting out with the tin of "Regular" in an attempt to baseline the 7 Seas line because it's labeled, well, "regular".

It's not knocking my socks off, but it is a very good, mild and tame aromatic. I smoke up to a dozen bowls a day, so a mild, all-day blend that my wife likes is appreciated.

This blend is not as full-bodied or flavored as much as most MacB aros, which is a plus if you are looking for a non-fussy smoke. There is some hint of vanilla and maybe a slight whiff of chocolate, but neither jump out at you. Good quality Virginia and Burley and a nicely dark and sedate Cavendish. It burns clean, not goopy and leaves a nice creaminess on the tongue.

I smoke fairly fast, but have not had issues with bite so far with this blend. It tends to be moist and soft, and packs nicely.

Sure, there are better tobaccos out there. But this is very good, balanced, easy to smoke and all around pleasant. Good for newbies and experienced smokers alike. I quite like this and will keep this in occasional rotation.

Heavy aromatic typical of MacBaren stable. Overall a positive review because: - it does not bite - it can be smoked as is (moist) and it will light well and not go out very much - it can be smoked after drying (it will produce better and milder smoke)

Tobacco: Cavendish is solid and clean, and Burley takes over fairly soon. Virginia influence is somewhat muted. Fine white ash, no problems with finishing the bowl. I also tried it mixed with a plain 1-Q, and then with BCA both by Lane) which helped to reduce the casing influence somewhat. Drying the baccy before smoking produced better results. Flavour is strongly influenced by Irish Cream style caramel and probably Dark Rum. Not as close to Trout Stream as others said. I cannot detect much "chocolate/coffee". I love aromatics but this one is probably too heavily cased even for me. Smoking MB tobacco made me realise how good 4noggins in-house blends are. Compared to this, Trout Stream (caramel/vanilla) is exceptionally good.

Outstanding aromatic tobacco, uncomparable in terms of quality, taste, burning qualities and smoking pleasure with the tobacco it pays tribute to, Captain Black Regular. And, like Geronimo pointed out, a spectacular price on top of everything. Mild, bite-free, pleasant, that smokes d
y (as long as you let it dry appropriately before packing). If you enjoy mild tobaccos and are seeking a high quality aromatic, 7 Seas Regular is the way to go.

What can one say about 7 Seas Regular that hasn't been said? With all the reviews online you have to know it's worth a try, so I did and figured I'd add my two cents as well!

When you first open a tin of 7 Seas Regular the smell of rich chocolate wafts from the package and teases your nose with hints of fantastic flavor you're about to enjoy. I'm reminded of a dark chocolate truffle covered with cacao powder in the aroma, so decadent I'm tempted to taste it. Upon lighting I found this to be one of the smoothest and tastiest tobaccos in the Aromatic category that I've tried thus far. With strong notes of rich dark chocolate dominating the palate and subtle vanilla undertones soothing forth within each puff of the smooth tobacco profile. The blend is made up of Virginia, Burley and tons of black Cavendish. It may need a relight or two, I usually do three or four if I'm not paying attention, but it's well worth the trouble. I have a few tobaccos in my rotation but this one has been my go to for smoking out and about, not only for the tasty and reliable flavor, but also for the complements I get on the room note! The nicotine is quite mild as well so you can load bowl after bowl no problem, a perfect blend for a mid-day break before getting back to life.

I give each pinch from the tin a little time to dry out, maybe 15min to 1hr under a ceiling fan, then smoke it slow and steady. She plays well with both filter and non filter pipes, not to mention you'll be hard pressed to get a bite as long as you let it dry a bit.

There is no disguise as to what the 7seas labels are for. A pretty good quality attempt at some American blends from lane limited. Nice sweet vanilla flavor with hints of fruits and honey, with cocoa coming forward now and then. Wet, yet easy too smoke. Nice change up from Captain Black White Pouch. Nothing wrong here. just a very mild smoke for aromatic lovers. And just like the Captain Blacks these days, should be priced a bit cheaper.

Very smooth and gentle tobacco. As a beginner, i was really surprised how good could tobacco taste. Chocolate and something like vanilla was real present in my mouth. 3 stars

Edit after several bowls. One of the best tobacco for me. Automatically set as one of the aromatic to my rotations. Sweetness, taste of honey, chocolate, vanilla from the beginning till the end. No moisture, no tongue bite.
