My ex’s grandmother once described Cracker Barrel restaurants as “a good standby place.” When you’re traveling in a new place and want a good meal without being adventurous, it’s the place to go. Captain Black tobacco is like that for me. It’s what I always recommend for new smokers. For the price and availability, there’s just nothing better, and Royal is a nice alternative to Original (“White”) if you want something a little milder and less vanilla-ey. It will bite, but only if you smoke it wrong. Smoked all the way to the bottom of my MM cob with no relights. Easy to pack.

This blend will always be special to me because it was the first pipe tobacco I ever had when I was a teenager. It is very similar to CB White, and probably is based on the same mixture. However, this blend is more than just the typical vanilla flavored aromatic. It has some great flavors in it that CB White just doesn't have: cocoa, nuts, and maybe a little fruit in there as well. It is more pronounced and full-bodied than CB White. I find it to be a very enjoyable smoke, and there is nothing better than loading up an old Dr. Grabow or a cob with this stuff and taking a trip down memory lane. Be aware that it might leave some moisture in your pipe and you may have a little dottle from time to time. That's usually the nature of aromatics, so just expect it and enjoy it for what pleasure it provides.

I can't decide if this or Captain Black Copper is my favorite CB blend. CB Royal is not as bitey as their cherry blend, does not give me the characteristic Captain Black PG-headache.

Lane Limited - Captain Black Royal.
Note: this review is based on 1oz loosely pouched from 4noggins.
The blend's a medium sized ribbon with a far higher proportion of brown Cavendish compared to black. The aroma from the pouch seems quite busy, with the easiest addition to identify being the vanilla. Because mine was supplied in a bulk form the moistness of the blend's unimpeachable.
The smoke? Yes, it's a bit of a clichéd beginners flavour but I find it very enjoyable. Once again, the vanilla is the biggest taste, but it's well complimented by the others. I find the molasses/caramel joined in 2nd place, and give a slight stickiness to the smoke. I couldn't say what type of alcohol/liquor is included, I can only identify an alcoholic sharpness as opposed to any actual flavour. The tobaccos' taste exactly as I suspected they would: a little clumsy! Sometimes stronger aromatics can bite but I get absolutely no aggression from this at all.
The room-note's very pleasant, and the nicotine's mild.
This is one of the best aromatic blends I've had: thick and heavy smoke, no bite, and a delicious flavour.
Highly recommended.

The only thing good about this blend is that its only slightly better than Captain Black Gold. It has a similar marshmellow taste and room aroma. However, somehow, this bit even worse than CB Gold. Captain Black White is an awesome tobacco, but the Royal left a tongue bite that lasted overnight.

Very nice blend from CB. For a cheaper than other smoke, it does hold to its value. Gives a very pleasant room note, yet the taste is not a disappointment. Smokes well in the bowl, burns at a fairly good temperature, the Cavendish gives a nice sweet smoke alongside some Vanilla aroma.
For a better enjoyment, roll the smoke in the front part of your mouth, around the palate just behind your teeth and on the inside of the lips around the front teeth. If smoked deeper in the mouth, it might generate some pharynx irritation.
Nice blend all in all from CB

No aroma, hard taste, it burns like hell and bites your tongue. I tried for once and throw away the rest. I went out for a relaxing night, grabbed a bottle of beer and started to smoked this one. First puff and bottoms up... bbrraaahhhh

This was the second tobacco I ever smoked. When it bit the hell out of my tongue and was boring and ashey tasting, I put it down to inexperience. But I came back several times, after success with several other tobaccos, and it still bit my tongue, and tasted like ash and dirt. Needless to say, not my favorite tobacco. I won't be buying any more. I much prefer white and gold to this stuff.

Floor sweep. Threw away 3/4 of a bowl and the rest of the pouch (only pipe tobacco I have thrown away). Best enjoyed when thrown in the trash or left in the store.

I think most reviews and ratings say it all about this blend. It's in the middle of everything. That's not exactly a good thing. It's mediocre. I totally recommend Capt. Black White over this one. But I like this one better than Captain Black Gold. It does stay damp for a long while. Just air it out longer. However, it's dry life isn't that long, so be prepared to smoke it soon or toss whatever goes bad. It does have a little tongue bite, so I guess you should smoke this slowly. Hope this helps.
