I bet that if this had a bigger price tag, a fancy packaging and were hard to find many people would praise it. But, since is cheap, comes in a simple bag and is widle avaiable, it MUST be awful!...

If you accept that this is not a multilayered, complex, high end smoke, you'll be able to enjoy this simple, smooth and unpretentious tobacco for what it is.

I stared smoking pipe with this blend and when i came back to it after smoking Bayou night, can't really love it that much. The room notes is plesant as a aro should be, there is a honey, bourbon like smell near the bow which i like alot, not to burn smoke at the end with is good for a cheap aro. Nic is very low, suit for beginner . The taste, as an retrohale smoker, is not very much to say, pick up a little sweet, chemical taste. But overral i still recommend this to beginner like myself, if you short on budget, this is to go.

Recently opened a pouch of this as I wanted to have something that wouldn't leave the car smelling like a pipe store on a sunday.

Overall this was a tame aromatic experience, with some vanilla, and molasses. You get a bit more of a tobacco flavor in this but it never quite reaches absolutely there levels.

Somewhat dry out of the pouch. This stuff has gotten expensive.

I still prefer Captain Black Dark, over this blend and whereas black has a rich flavor and smell, this one is somewhat toned down.

If you want to try this, wait for a sale and put the 7+ dollars to something better.

I can´t understand people who doesn't like aromatics buying it and coming here to say how disappointed they are. First of all this is a good blend, has all aromatic traditional characteristics, wet tobacco, can make your bowl really hot when fast smoked, can make the bubbling when finishing but all drugstore tobacco blend has mostly or even all of this points. So why buying it? BC is good. It has a good flavor, good price, easy to find, reliable tobacco quality, so i recommend everyone at least give a try in order to make your own decision, but if you are the kind of smoker which cant handle aro, this is not for you.

I always keep a pipe in my vehicle but not tobacco. So when I recently found myself able to smoke said pipe but without tobacco, I headed to the local convenience mart and picked up a pouch of this, the very first decent tobacco I ever smoked, lo these many years ago.

First, let me get something out in the open that was old news back in the 1980's but seems to have escaped some of the newer pipe smokers. This is the same as Lane's 1Q with added propylene glycol to preserve shelf life. CB White is the same as Lane's RLP-6 and CB Gold is the same as Lane's MV-1000. Precisely the same recipe but with added PG so that when you buy a pouch that is a year or so old, it'll still taste the same as the day it left the factory. This fact has been confirmed by many Lane's reps over the years. There are some folks that swear they are different and I attribute that to the extra PG (or the need to find differences in everything!). PG has a flavor and, in my opinion, accounts for the artificially sweeter nature of this one over 1Q. I don't know this for sure because "back in the day" these blends weren't around, but I have no doubt that Captain Black Dark is Lane's BCA and Captain Black Cherry is probably TK6.

Ok, I'm only giving this 2 stars but I still think this is an enjoyable tobacco. Indeed, I smoke a bowl or two of 1Q every year, just for fun. And this one is almost as fun! Warm vanilla with a dash of caramel, essentially the same flavoring as the other three Captains mentioned, but with more black cavendish than the gold and less than the white. I don't taste a lot of actual tobacco here, and I think that is the point. The vanilla is the star and it is a soft flavor that is noticeable in each puff. If you want huge flavor, be it tobacco or vanilla, this isn't for you. Smoke it slowly or you'll further hide the flavors, but don't worry about bite, as that would require puffing like a locomotive. Neither does it have much in the way of nicotine. What it does have is a light, pleasant taste and an aroma that non-smokers seem to enjoy. Taken for what it is, this is nice smoke. And it's wallet-friendly, too!

I think most reviews and ratings say it all about this blend. It's in the middle of everything. That's not exactly a good thing. It's mediocre. I totally recommend Capt. Black White over this one. But I like this one better than Captain Black Gold. It does stay damp for a long while. Just air it out longer. However, it's dry life isn't that long, so be prepared to smoke it soon or toss whatever goes bad. It does have a little tongue bite, so I guess you should smoke this slowly. Hope this helps.

I can't find anything wrong with it. It doesn't excite me greatly. It doesn't seem to misbehave, but it will ghost the hell out of a pipe. Not a biter, not a bad gurgler if you smoke at a reasonable pace, and it doesn't smell bad at all. In fact I was stopped 3 times in one block's distance last week by women who told me that the smell made them think either of their grandfather or father. Not a bad thing I guess, except I am only 36. I may not keep a large quantity on hand, but it is an open option for me when i want an easy going, care free puffer.

Checking the reviews on this blend, I realize I haven`t done my bit on this variant of Captain Black. I still stand by the contention that Captain Black White is the best of the lot. This one, however, comes a close second. I find it richer and more flavorsome than gold, and rather more complex than red, but not as good as White.

In a way Captain Black Royal is a more refined rendering of the chunky White version, with a stronger casing agent, and a more defined aromatic structure. It also comes with a higher degree of moisture. It definitely is more syrupy and oily than the original White, but it also produces a pervading room note that, indeed, many non smokers find at least tolerable, when not pleasant. Chocolate, vanilla, some caramel, all very chemically Cavendish in the sweetest sense of the term.

In my view, Royal easily becomes a cloying smoke (unlike its White and Gold siblings), and does tend to affect the burning qualities of a briar. So a pipe devoted only to aromatics is highly recommended when smoking this blend. Similar tobaccos, but far less aggressive in the sweetness and goopy departments would be 1Q and MacBaren's Original Choice, the latter probably being the better choice.

All in all, a good indoor-social smoke, suitable for both beginners and those established pipe smokers tolerant of aromatics, but, in my opinion, only once in a blue moon.

PS: Is there any difference between Blue and Royal (whic comes in navy blue pouch)? Just wondering...

This may be the reason why I smoke today. This is great-smelling stuff, and I suppose one of the blends that many new pipesters started with. It is rather weak in flavor, but it is cool and smells great. As someone said above, if I really wanted to smoke a pipe but only drugstore-varieties were around, Captain Black Royal Blue or White package would get my choice.

One of the okayest aromatics I've smoked. After 4-5 pipes of this, I don't think I'll be buying another pouch anytime soon. It's not bad, but not that good to me either. It burned hot a few times for me, but that was probably because I didn't get enough flavor. It was kind of like hookah, where you can taste the fruitiness on a carrier of mostly hot air. If I'm buying Captain Black in the future, I'll be reaching for Gold instead. If you like shisha though go ahead and give it a try.
