As with some of the other Captain Black products, you have to sip it to avoid tongue bite. Unlike most of the other CB mixtures, this actually has a little complexity of taste. The various toppings include a touch of molasses, some caramel, honey and more obvious vanilla are not over the top, but they do sublimate the tobaccos quite a lot. The grassy, citrusy, dried fruity gold cavendish is hardly noticeable. The sugary black cavendish mixes in with the toppings, so it, too, is not very obvious on its own, though I would say it synergistically works in harmony with the toppings for the overall, very consistent flavor of the blend. The strength is mild, while the taste is a couple steps past that mark. Barely has any nicotine. Burns clean and slightly fast. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, short lived after taste and room note. An all day smoke that wears fairly well on your senses during the day so long as you don't puff like a steam engine.

This is a good one. A pleasing, aromatic and "ellegant" tobacco. Heavy on the vanilla, right off the pouch it smells very good. Dark, and yellow bright cavendish stripes will be found in a loose cut. Smoking it, the aroma is quite decent on the exhale, smoke is dense and flavorful. For me it is the most pleasing of al CB blends and it does not bite the tongue a lot more than Gold or even Round Taste. However I wouldn't call it mild at all as it is heavy both on flavor and room note, neither its strength - I would say medium-strong in some bowls I've had (and mild-medium rarely). It really depends on how you keep it. I've noticed that it will dry up considerably fast if not set in a can or ziplocked. I definitely recommend it, but not for the faint hearted.

Typically I wouldn't smoke a Captain Black tobacco, although I do like Dark Red...I'm only reviewing this because when I first smoked Royal, it was very wet, loaded with PPG, and was way over the top in sweetness...

Now, I do like alot of the OTC tobaccos and upon several recent dicussions I decided to try this again...Quite a difference, now that STG has taken over these Lane tobaccos... Not "goopy" or as wet , the feel is less sticky, and I don't feel/see the overload of PPG.

Many say that Royal and 1-Q are the same...They are very similar, for sure, but I can't quite say if they are indeed the same...In any case, I'm glad I have given Royal another chance...

The Campbell's Soup of pipe tobacco: it ain't particularly great, but it also ain't bad, and it's useful to have some in the cupboard.

I bought a pouch of this and some Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish from a sad and lonely tobacconist in a near-empty shop. I bought it just to buy something. The Borkum Riff was hideous, but this is a pleasant enough smoke. The pouch aromas are all chocolate and vanilla and the tobacco itself is passable--moist, shaggy, black and gold Cavendish. It burns outrageously hot, as expected, but also produces copious amounts of sweet-smelling smoke. The latter stages of the bowl find the Captain getting a little angry and bitter and so I put him out of my misery about two thirds of the way in.

Measured against all of the other quality aromatics out there, this is at best a modest quality smoke and deserves a guarded 2-star recommendation. But I think that if we bring price into the equation, then this merits greater consideration. If the economy continues to slide, I might have to invoke the "Quit or Go Captain" compromise.

So: 2-stars when the bulls are running through the streets; 4-stars when the bear is rummaging through the dumpster.

I've purchased pouches Royal off and on for years and always been satisfied with the quality and flavor. The aromatic character of this blend is less intense that others of the captain black brand. I almost suspect some kind of liquor additive to dissolve and deliver the flavorings. Spice, incense, nougat and liqueur perhaps?? Anyway it's a solid dependable winner every time.

The aroma is that which draws so many of us to be pipe smokers in the first place, and non-smokers passing by can't help but be pleased and curious.

There is true tobacco taste and flavor here, the top noting compliments and does not mask the genuine tobacco character. Any fan of Captain Black and aromatics in general will enjoy giving this blend a try. I'll always come back for more...

Good Draw to you,,, Cheers!!

Captain Black Royal (CBR) is a little better than CB Regular/White in my opinion. They are both good examples of an OTC aromatic tobaccos. I just seem to like CBR more than CBW, it has a better taste & more flavor. It's a readily available good tasting smoke that you can get almost anywhere, though you'll find CBW or CB Gold more than CBR at most stores.

Upon opening the pouch or tub you get a rich aroma of vanilla, chocolate & caramel, with a some PG chemical overtone like CBW, but like I said in that review, not as bad as some others. It's a very flavorful smoke & the room note kinda smells like brownies or cookies baking in the oven.

The key to a good smoke with both CB's I've tried so far is letting what you are going to smoke sit out for a bit before loading up your pipe. It helps to cut down on relighting a bunch. CBR is best kept to a slow sip or you're not going to get much flavor, probably get some ashy taste, some bite & won't enjoy the smoking experience much. I use a filtered pipe to cut down on the moisture, which helps to make a cooler smoke.

CBR in my opinion is a little better overall in flavor than CBW. I enjoy it's flavor & tend to smoke it a little more than CBW. They are both good OTC aromatic tobaccos & worth a try, you might even enjoy them.

Sweet like all Captain Black products. It was not as overpowering as CBW and I swear there was a tinge of fruit... Like candied fruit. Smoked like other CB products: wet, goopy, hot, yummy. Something still draws my attention to these pouches at CVS. Whether it be the price or reminiscence of my first tobacco experiences, every once in a while I enjoy a pouch of the Captain. Recommend for beginners, and recommended for the occasional flashback.

This is another of my weekly pouch purchase. Weekly coupons is the mail reason I buy it. 2 pouches a in week go into a jar. Smoke flavor is good. Easy to light no tough bite. Pack bowl full with 3 plus pinch. Smokes much better packed than loose. Good flavor that lasts. Ages well. Pouch and bulk good buy.

I suppose the logic behind my three stars is that I trashed the White original CB and I must admit, I liked this one substantially better than that. It is a marshmallow type sweetness, that I found to be pleasant in my meer.

I did not enjoy it as much in my briar, but it was still bearable. It would probably rate for my tastes in the 2.5 range, but I am bumping it up a bit for availability as it is everywhere. Not a whole lot to say about it as aromatics are not my preferred smoke, but make a tasty treat from time to time. I usually prefer an aro where I taste the underlying leaf, this is not one of those types of aros. But I did not find it to be overwhelmingly sweet like I did the White and Autumn Evening by C & D.

Overall I recommend and, in particular, to the beginner.

Thick and fragrant billows full of vanilla and caramel, along with a flavor of fully ripe banana, leads me to see this blend in my rotation as a rich Banana's foster. Perhaps halfway through the pouch, through silly desire to be an amateur blender, I added, in two different bowls, one with a quarter perique. and one with a quarter latakia. The perique was worthwhile. The Latakia would've been better elsewhere.
