Clearly become my favorite tobacco. Taste is consistent from top to bottom, mild in everything just nice blend. Sweet, no tongue bite can do good for all day smoke. Room note is very nice. Highly recommended.

First pipe tobacco I ever had. Its good. I like it. It smells and tastes like angel food cake or some other vanilla confectionery. People love the room note, if your outside they'll rub your elbows. If there's a knock on it, it's the mind-numbingly consistent flavour. It can be boring. But, some people like consistency and I can appreciate that. Burns great. Doesn't bite too easily. Great beginner aromatic. If you're Canadian and can't make heads or tails of the vast selection up north, know this, it's better than Borkum Riff. LLAP.

Captain Black Royal is pretty much a working man's blue collar aromatic. I really like the cut. It's like thin smaller ribbons rather than rough cut like the Original. I actually like the Original better because of the stronger taste and room note, but this is very good too. I see reviews where people start off by saying "I don't like aromatics and this one is blah blah blah". Why are you smoking it then? I like it, it's sweet, but not sickly sweet and the room note will drawl in the "man that smells good" complements. Has more tobacco flavor then Original and the room aroma is toned down a bit. I know people that have been smoking pipes for 50 years who LOVE this stuff. I absolutely love Captain Black and other Lane tobaccos. They use food grade flavoring and high quality tobacco. These are American style aromatic pipe tobaccos for whoever enjoys them. I like strong Lakelands but I can't stand English blends. These aromatics help me when my tongue gets tired of Kendal Flake or Coniston Cut Plug. It's a nice break. I recommend this to new pipe smokers and codgers too!

To be honest after reading the reviews I thought this was going to pack a punch. It does not. The flavouring is very faint, a little bit of licorice in the tin note, but when lit the flavours of vanilla and everything else are extremely subtle. You can really taste the black cavendish. It's very smooth and creamy and burns slow.

So why 1 star you might ask? Because it tastes like gas station $1 cigarillos.

I always keep a pipe in my vehicle but not tobacco. So when I recently found myself able to smoke said pipe but without tobacco, I headed to the local convenience mart and picked up a pouch of this, the very first decent tobacco I ever smoked, lo these many years ago.

First, let me get something out in the open that was old news back in the 1980's but seems to have escaped some of the newer pipe smokers. This is the same as Lane's 1Q with added propylene glycol to preserve shelf life. CB White is the same as Lane's RLP-6 and CB Gold is the same as Lane's MV-1000. Precisely the same recipe but with added PG so that when you buy a pouch that is a year or so old, it'll still taste the same as the day it left the factory. This fact has been confirmed by many Lane's reps over the years. There are some folks that swear they are different and I attribute that to the extra PG (or the need to find differences in everything!). PG has a flavor and, in my opinion, accounts for the artificially sweeter nature of this one over 1Q. I don't know this for sure because "back in the day" these blends weren't around, but I have no doubt that Captain Black Dark is Lane's BCA and Captain Black Cherry is probably TK6.

Ok, I'm only giving this 2 stars but I still think this is an enjoyable tobacco. Indeed, I smoke a bowl or two of 1Q every year, just for fun. And this one is almost as fun! Warm vanilla with a dash of caramel, essentially the same flavoring as the other three Captains mentioned, but with more black cavendish than the gold and less than the white. I don't taste a lot of actual tobacco here, and I think that is the point. The vanilla is the star and it is a soft flavor that is noticeable in each puff. If you want huge flavor, be it tobacco or vanilla, this isn't for you. Smoke it slowly or you'll further hide the flavors, but don't worry about bite, as that would require puffing like a locomotive. Neither does it have much in the way of nicotine. What it does have is a light, pleasant taste and an aroma that non-smokers seem to enjoy. Taken for what it is, this is nice smoke. And it's wallet-friendly, too!

I am glad so many people like this blend, but I can't be counted among them. For me, the bag is great on the nose but has little complexity. One of the earlier reviews compared it to smoking steam, and I have to agree. It is nice that it is so accessible in stores, but I will be finding something stronger to blend it with asap!

This is one of my favorite aromatic pipe tobacco's. It's my favorite Captain Black tobacco. I have a mm cob dedicated to just this. I like this the most in the morning with a coffee. Taste good and the smell of the smoke is amazing. No issues at all. This is a good one. I buy it all the time. Always have a pouch in my tobacco cupboard. I enjoy smoking this when I'm fishing and when I go walking in the woods early in the morning with my dog and a travel mug full of coffee.

hello, Bought 2 packs opened the first one and was greeted with a good aroma , the tobacco was full of PG, ribbon cut and easy to pack into the pipe , it was a problem to light about 4 to 5 times just to get a good smoke you can't even say a sentence without relighting. all i tasted was sweet steam and tobacco ash which i hated (guys this is a tobacco product not vaping for what is all that PG) . i decided to dry it well and tried it in a second attempt anyway the tobacco flavour got better , less steam and less relights but still the taste was dull, monochromatic good thing it didn't bite or got hot.

i want to enjoy my pipe and cb royal wasn't my cup of tea. i don't recommend it.

1 star for not biting. 0 star for taste. 0 star for relights. 0 star for price would not smoke it for free, threw away both pouches.

This is your standard OTC drug store tobacco, minus some flavor. While others poo-poo it for not having sophisticated flavor, I find it fits the bill when all you want is something to smoke mindlessly while puttering in the garage or mowing the grass. If you're looking for mind-blowing flavor, this ain't it. It has a very sweet taste (though not as prominent as the White variety) and must be smoked slowly in order to get anything at all out of it. The room note WILL please the ladies and is one of the few blends I will smoke in an enclosed area as it leaves a very pleasant aroma behind. It will also ghost your pipe, so I only smoke it in a basket or cob dedicated to that purpose. As far as all those one-star reviews, just understand it for what it is. Are there better tobaccos out there? Most definitely, but it has its place and deserves to be respected for that.

A very good blend. Captain Black is an aromatic blend. It does not compare to English blends or Va/Per. It packs well, lights easily, and smokes without bite or moisture in the bowl. I sense vanilla and taste quality tobacco. I would recommend this to any beginner and to any aromatic lover.
