Peter Stokkebye Turkish Export (No.84)

(3.50)
Stokkebye’s Turkish Pipe tobacco is a flavorful uncased blend of Turkish Samsun (a legendary Oriental leaf) which is sun-cured and expertly blended with ripe Virginia tobaccos for a complex pleasing smoke. It is lightly aromatic and smooth.
Notes: This comes in 2 cuts - a fine ribbon (in bulk) for pipe, and a fine shag (in pouch) for RYO.

Peter Stokkebye has offered a great service to the tobacco industry. His factory produces A-grade premium tobacco for those who roll their own cigarettes, and a variety of great pipe tobaccos. 84 Turkish is an awesome dual-purpose tobacco. I smoked Turkish Export as a cigarette for years before recently trying the ribbon cut in a pipe.

This blend strikes a perfect balance between the sweet/grassy Virginia and the spicy floral Samsun leaf. It is a calm smoke, smooth and easy on the tongue. I sense a very light top note that seems to accentuate the sweetness and floral character. Could easily make an all day, everyday smoke.

The best cigarette a tiny amount of money can buy. Smell is subtle but very enticing, because the lack of chemicals/artificial crap is instantly evident. Fantastically clean tasting and burning, one could chain-smoke this and not feel any of the nasty consequences that corporate shit-sticks have. Leaves a mild and slightly sugary taste in the mouth which is just lovely. Strength is perfectly moderate. It's the only tobacco that I can smoke and then kiss my tobacco-free girlfriend without her making grossed-out faces at me. Superlative in every respect.

I hesitate to call this blend complex (as the description suggests). I find this smoke uncomplicated with some sweet nuances from the Samsun and a little sharpness from the Virginias. It's smooth, not harsh, and, if you are a former or current cigarette smoker it will remind you somewhat of a Camel (one of my old brands). This is not a downside in my view, as this blend works well in a pipe. The cut of the tobacco, a fine ribbon (really, a shag in my opinion) packed well and lit well—this tobacco burns clean right down to the bottom of the pipe. A thoroughly enjoyable smoke.

Turkish 84 met my expectations in every way. I love oriental blends, toasty, comforting, relatively low in nicotine—it's an enjoyable smoke, no headaches, or stomachaches, just good simple smoking pleasure. Here's a smoke that is pure; there are no additives. It's a real tobacco treat. This is how tobacco should be—why would anybody smoke anything else?

Recommended.

This is a impressive tobacco. I don't RYO so just a pipe review here. I love the warm buttery, nutty taste and there's a little nic there too. I can smoke bowl after bowl and be satisfied. I have also blended with Old Gowrie and that works out well. For a newcomer or veteran it is truly a good standard. The room note is a little on the cig side, but that vanishes within minutes, so my wife never complains.

PS now calls this "Turkish Pipe Tobacco". It's the same thing as the first reviewer spoke of. A shag cut, best for RYO but can be smoked in a pipe as well. It's probably what some would call a 'faux' pipe tobacco; really an RYO but called pipe tobacco to avoid the exhorbitant tax on cigarettes tobacco.

They also have their Danish, Norwegian, and Amsterdam blends similarly labeled. Hopefully they will do the same with their English Export. These are as good as RYO tobaccos are going to get and priced to be in the same range as much inferior tobaccos like Red Cap, 4 Aces, and others.

For RYO tobaccos, PS's blends cannot be beaten at any price.

This is more for blending. Turkish tobaccos tend to be spicy and somehow this one picks. You can tame it by adding some sweet Virginias or Cavendish of fairly common blends. I added some good Virginias and a little bit of Captain Black White cavendish and the smoke was much better.

Peter Stokkebye - Turkish Export (No.84).

The blend comprises an equal amount of gold and medium brown ribbons, these are fine in build, and arrive with a smokeable hydration to them.

The smoke: from my point of view, would be a good blending leaf, but isn't particularly enjoyable straight. I get no Virginia flavour, it seems to be 100% Samsun. Sort of like a sour, cigar, type flavour, unrelenting in its potency. Ergo, why I'd use this for blending, not straight-smoking. Another problem with smoking it neat is the temperature: it needs a gentle technique otherwise can become way too warm.

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: tolerable to strong.

Turkish Export (No.84): a three star blending weed, but a one star blend alone. Somewhat recommended:

Two stars.

Reviewing as RYO/MYO cigarette tobacco. Monotone sweetness balanced by mild tobacco and very mild earthy flavors. The good type of earthy flavors like some hay, a little fresh raw white mushrooms, and very occasional Italian seasoning. Have to concentrate to find the flavors, if not, still great smoke regardless. No topping/casing flavor detected, "natural" offering. Decent body. Mild nicotine, is a nice feature. Burns cool, another big plus. High praise for what this tobacco doesn't do more than what is does; it will not make your head spin, no assertive flavor to pan, no odd oriental funkyness, and no aftertaste issues. A favorite for mass consumption and daily smoke. Great blender. Very forgiving. Good value. This one surprised me, outstanding understated tobacco in my opion.

Good Oriental, mild and elegant, rich amount of Samsun leaf. Good for blending but also very nice stand alone (Nikolas/Greece)

This tobacco is quite pleasant to smoke in a pipe, even though the cut is quite fine. Mild oriental and sweet virginia. One of the best RYO tobaccos. For the former cigarette smokers, it has the advantage that it can be inhaled. There is no tongue bite (which was the reason I never took to pipe smoking full time). I also use it to sprinkle a bit on top of coarse pipe tobacco to make it easier to light, and sometimes blend it with other, stronger tobaccos to tone them down. Cons: RYO tobacco is taxed heavily, so it's somewhat expensive. For pipe smoking you can achieve similar results with the PS Balkan Supreme.
