Peter Stokkebye Turkish Export (No.84)
(3.50)
Stokkebye’s Turkish Pipe tobacco is a flavorful uncased blend of Turkish Samsun (a legendary Oriental leaf) which is sun-cured and expertly blended with ripe Virginia tobaccos for a complex pleasing smoke. It is lightly aromatic and smooth.
Notes: This comes in 2 cuts - a fine ribbon (in bulk) for pipe, and a fine shag (in pouch) for RYO.

Among the most versatile blends available, and the best of the PS dual-purpose tobaccos, Turkish is smooth and sweet with a natural backdrop of salted nuts. This blend is full of natural sugars yet carries just enough oriental salt/pepper to keep it interesting.
Performs excellently in the pipe or as RYO, burning just fast enough for a RYO but just slow enough for a pipe. Turkish also serves as a good mixer for home blenders. Smokes cool for its burn rate, with no bite.
This is a delicious, unadulterated tobacco for all-day smokers and one of my go- to cob tobaccos for occasions that don't call for a more complex, sitting-in-an- armchair blend: mid-day smoking, working outside, driving, etc
I am very impressed with this tobacco.
A few notes of disagreement with the blender's description above: this is different than the PS RYO pouches of 'Turkish'. Cut is similar, but the tobacco comes more moist in bulk. Also, the cut is better described as ribbon than shag, especially compared to an RYO smokers definition of "shag". To say that this "is tobacco for regular cigarettes" is, in my opinion, a disservice. While this tobacco will roll excellent cigarettes, it really comes alive in a pipe, and particulary in a cob. Smokes very dry, burning down to ash and leaving absolutely no residue. Strong in the vitamin, lightweights beware.
Highly recommended for: - cigarette smokers looking to transition to the pipe - pipe smokers who enjoy straightforward orientals - anyone looking for a natural, unadulterated pipe tobacco
I will be buying significant quantities of this tobacco before it's taxed out of existence.
Edit: update Sept '12. This has rapidly become my all day tobacco. I reserve evenings for blends of complexity. But for smoking throughout the day, this blend delivers wonderful, sweet, natural tobacco flavor at a price that can't be beat. Burn rate is perfect for smoking on the fly. Enjoying this mostly in cobs, which seem a great match.
Edit: April '16: still a great blend by my taste. Nutty, mildly spicy, a great all-day smoke. Pull the trigger on this one.

I have a few ounces of this I am working through. This is an interesting smoke. I was smoking the pipe thin ribbon version, and it stayed lit well and burned cool. I found a few interesting qualities in this blend. It tickles the nose early in the bowl and gives an occasional tingle to the tongue late in the bowl. It leaves a very pleasant sweetish aftertaste in the mouth when you put the pipe down.
In terms of flavor, it is thin but a pleasant mix of sweet and spicy. There is no topping that I can detect. This is a mild smoke and has a decent tobacco flavor with a little something extra to provide interest.
Edit 8/17/14: I bought a pound of this when the sample was nearing the end. I find this a remarkably good "all-day" smoke. I have not tried blending it with anything. Hydrating it a little in the pouch intensifies the flavors.

I hesitate to call this blend complex (as the description suggests). I find this smoke uncomplicated with some sweet nuances from the Samsun and a little sharpness from the Virginias. It's smooth, not harsh, and, if you are a former or current cigarette smoker it will remind you somewhat of a Camel (one of my old brands). This is not a downside in my view, as this blend works well in a pipe. The cut of the tobacco, a fine ribbon (really, a shag in my opinion) packed well and lit well—this tobacco burns clean right down to the bottom of the pipe. A thoroughly enjoyable smoke.
Turkish 84 met my expectations in every way. I love oriental blends, toasty, comforting, relatively low in nicotine—it's an enjoyable smoke, no headaches, or stomachaches, just good simple smoking pleasure. Here's a smoke that is pure; there are no additives. It's a real tobacco treat. This is how tobacco should be—why would anybody smoke anything else?

Good Oriental, mild and elegant, rich amount of Samsun leaf. Good for blending but also very nice stand alone (Nikolas/Greece)

This tobacco is quite pleasant to smoke in a pipe, even though the cut is quite fine. Mild oriental and sweet virginia. One of the best RYO tobaccos. For the former cigarette smokers, it has the advantage that it can be inhaled. There is no tongue bite (which was the reason I never took to pipe smoking full time). I also use it to sprinkle a bit on top of coarse pipe tobacco to make it easier to light, and sometimes blend it with other, stronger tobaccos to tone them down. Cons: RYO tobacco is taxed heavily, so it's somewhat expensive. For pipe smoking you can achieve similar results with the PS Balkan Supreme.

Thinly cut ribbon, almost a shag. Smells naturally sweet, with some faint sourness and a hint of spice. This may actually well be an uncased tobacco blend.
Packs well when using a light hand. Very easy to keep lit. If smoked slowly, lots of oriental goodness is to be savoured. Sweet and sour and somewhat salty, with a rounded nuttiness and some spice — and an underlying woody dryness. The Virginias aren't noticeable at all. Mild in flavour and not a lot of nicotine. Not a complex smoke, but far from a one-dimensional one.
It is important to smoke this slowly and evenly. If not, an unpleasant, ashy cigarette-taste comes forth. This tobacco can easily be inhaled, but that's better avoided in a pipe. I have not tried it (and probably won't), but I am sure this would work well in cigarettes. As a pipe tobacco, it could easily be an all-day smoke. Would probably be good for blending too; I'd like to try this mixed with some earthy, dark Virginia, and maybe just a breath of Latakia.

My two ounces of Turkish Export is of the fine ribbon variety found in the bulk version of this blend. The pouch scent is of grassy bright Virginias and I smell that more than the Samsun. I have always found Samsun to be a delicate, sweet Oriental that needs to be sipped in order to get the most out of it. That is the case here too. The Virginia component offers a little sweetness and mostly hay. The combination of the two make for a bright, sweet blend. It starts out mild, but quickly turns medium in strength. There is no bite, but due to the cut and components, it can burn a little warm if pushed. Careful packing is important in order to get the most out of this blend. TE isn’t complex , but straightforward only building in flavor as each bowl progresses. I prefer McClelland Samsun (Grand Orientals) over this blend, but this makes a solid alternative and easier on the wallet. It also is a great blend to add to other blends. I would expect this to cellar very well too.

Easy on the nose, the tongue and the wallet. TE 84 is a very nice tobacco with a raisin-y tin note and a good aroma. The tin note is more tobacco-y than the taste, though.. There's just not enough oomph (tobacco flavor) for me to want to smoke it all the time. But it's good enough that I give it a 3, which its quality warrants. Very pleasant and undemanding though enjoyable smoke. If this had a little more punch it would be fabulous.
EDIT 10/27/14: Too mild for me, though others obviously love it. If you want to try an Oriental but are concerned about Latakia, this has only Orientals and Virginia.

Update....I stand by my previous review but after letting this age for about 6 months to a year the flavor has really matured well. It is deeper and fuller. The spice is still there from the Orientals but the virginia sweetness has come out. I was primarily blending with this when it was fresh but after the age I now really enjoy this by itself and has bumped this up to a 4-4.5 stars.
If you smoke bold or heavy blends this may seems a little thin and flat but if you are an oriental fan you will like this. Just enough virginia to give it a touch of sweetness but not enough to smooth out or hide the oriental. Plenty of fragrant spice and sharpness. A little sour but mostly spicy and salty. If you have had blends with orientals and liked them this is a great way to try them by themselves and really see exactly what they add to a blend. This would also be a great blending component for creating your own blends or a great roll your own tobacco. If it is smoked to fast it gets hot and tastes ashy so pack tight and smoke slow.

Back in the old days (1990s) I enjoyed smoking Camel cigarettes. Didn't usually do the unflitered, but from time-to-time I would. Trying this gave me pleasant memories.
I bought some bulk and put it in a large jar and promptly forgot about it. I found the jar and decided to light it up again. The bulk I got is ribbon not shag cut. A variety of tobaccos are obvious and it seems darker now than when purchased. Easy to pack and light.
The oriental tastes are the stars of the show here for sure. Not as subtle as in most Balkans, but more in your face from beginning to end. In a medium sized bowl, it produces a consistent smoke from beginning to end. Room-note is towards the realm of Camel. Always seems to leave a spicy aftertaste. Nic content seems mild at best.
