Sutliff Tobacco Company Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend

(2.84)
A pleasing aromatic with a nutty sweet burley, gold cavendish, and flavored black cavendish taste. These tobaccos are combined with fruity plum and wine notes, along with a slight flavor push from a hint of Latakia for added sweetness and body. A harmonious blend that burns cool and slowly for full enjoyment.
Notes: Created in 1946, the blending was done under the personal supervision of Edward G. Robinson himself.

Edward G Robinson’s pipe blend is an old–fashioned all day smoke. It’s an American blend typical of what one would find on the store shelf back in the first half of the 20th century and last couple decades of the 19th.

This is not a flavor bomb. The taste is mild: suitable for smoking in pipe after pipe throughout the day. Back when men had but one or two pipes and smoked just one brand of tobacco. You found a taste you liked and that’s what you smoked. There was no such thing as a rotation.

My grandfather, for example, smoked London Dock. That was it. And if I recall correctly, he had no more than six pipes — and only regularly smoked two of them. Those were simple days back then.

My tongue, unfortunately, can’t pick up a lot of the nuances that other reviewers pick up on. What I can say is that I like Robinson’s blend.

The tin aroma is the best I’ve ever smelled. It’s absolutely delicious. I could leave an open tin on my desk for potpourri. The taste is a mild version of the tin aroma. Something akin to a sweet steamed pudding.

Now that I am retired and back smoking a pipe, I can see this blend quite easily being with me all day, every day. It is simply delicious and unobtrusive. Kind of like classical music in the background.

If I did not like Sutliff’s Match Holiday as much as I do, I’d be a convert to making Robinson’s blend my all day smoke.

Edward G Robinson’s Pipe Blend is Highly Recommended, if you’re looking for a mild, all day companion.

I can't wax eloquent about this tobacco because all I know is that I like it. It's a very smooth burley with what my palate senses as a red wine topped cavendish. There must be just enough latakia in there to add a smooth, faintly sweet undertow (I only know this because they tell me, not because I can identify it). Everything is perfectly balanced and it leaves behind a note that will not offend non-smokers in your midst. Great everyday smoke.

Tin note of smoky wine, tart plums and spices. Tobacco is a coarse cut of dark brown, brown, tan and black. Moisture content is good, some pipe smokers may want to dry it a bit. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is mild, with notes of wine, cinnamon and plum. The wine remains in the background from beginning to end, the spicy cinnamon comes in and out sporadically and the plum is most evident in the beginning but disappears near the 1/2-way point. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of tangy dark plum, smoky spices, nuts, molasses, zesty citrus, wood, sugar, slight spicy cinnamon, cocoa, peaty vegetation, floral, fermented sour, toast, orange peel, a tart wine and lemon grass background note, and a peppery retro. Burley is leading with Flavoring, Cavendish, and Latakia supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

This is a great tobacco that reminds me of one of my granddad's. I really like it but find the flavoring agent a wee bit strong and the very thin ribbon cut a wee bit fine for it to work for me as an everyday blend. So I've taken to mixing it two to one with Cornell & Diehl's rough cut VaBur(Lat) Golden Ash to make my own blend I call 'Shelby Foote' after the late, great author and pipe smoker. Of course, I can't claim to have reproduced Mr Foote's blend but, I've read as much as I can and I think I'm close. If this kind of thing interests you, buy a couple of tubs and a few ounces of these two reasonably prices tobaccos and let me know what you think.

Really good. The burley is unmistakably sutliff; It's nutty and creamy and can get bitter if puffed too fast. The latakia is quality and proportioned just right, it doesn't overwhelm in any way and provides some mojo to the burley. Virginias add some grass notes to even it out, but they aren't as obvious to me as the burley and latakia. There is an extremely light plum-like fruitiness that is a bit raspberry at times and I dont know if it's the virginia, burley or cavendish, but there's a noticeably sweet taste of honey. Also, a whisp of pepper, or some sorta spice. It burns fast, which is fine for me. A very dry smoke. Good amount of nicotine. Nice aftertaste and it doesn't bite, hard. There's alot to like here. Im not over the moon with it, but it's a solid smoke. Overall, 3 stars. While on the topic of character actors from the golden age of film, I believe Peter Lorre was second to none, but Edward G. Robinson was great too and his pipe tobacco is delicious, more than worth a shot. Recommend.

“Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?” I love the actor and knowing he was a renowned pipe smoker I felt that I couldn’t go wrong with this blend. I jumped in with both feet and bought a tub. That proved to be a big mistake. Trying to avoid being bitten while simultaneously trying to keep the tobacco lit is an exercise in futility. This blend has very little taste and smells of cheap red wine. The Latakia that drew me to this blend was present in the tub note but I couldn’t taste it when smoking. This blend was an utter disappointment.

I was a little annoyed that smokingpipes.com put this one under its own brand, as I don't usually seek out Sutliff products. I'm not sure who Edward G. Robinson is, but he must of worked in advertising... you get this huge tin, which laughably has less tobacco than a typical one (1.5 vs 1.75oz).

The initial tin whif, did not get any juices flowing. It had that musty, boozy drenched cardboard smell with some added sharp notes (the cinnamon perhaps). It reminded me a lot of Borkum Riff's Limited Edition Wine nightmare (so cheap booze making for an unpleasant smoke may be a theme). The cut was a mottled mix of light shredded paper flakes that were admittingly the right moisture and ready to light.

While the first few puffs were not my jam, I will admit there was a general liqueur taste that was OK, yet it was competing with the light spice present (again maybe the cinnamon flavoring). It grew on me slightly and I got past my impulse to toss the tin. The thin cut caused a few gurgles, but otherwise it was a simple mild smoke. I could see someone wanting this for an all ay smoker, but for me, I just kept mixing it with other leftovers to make a 'good enough' smoke.

Definitely reminded me of something one's not picky dad would smoke, when less options were available back in the day.

This is a simple, enjoyable, all day blend. Brown and tan in the tin, with a gently aromatic tin note reminiscent of fruit and a mild alcohol topping. Although latakia is referenced on the tin, there is no sign of this either in the nose or when lit.

I concur with other reviewers that a slight grape or other plum type edge can be found in the smoke, but not in an obviously aromatic kind of way. Cinnamon? Can't really detect that either, but clearly the cavendish is a main player bringing smoothness to the table and rounding out the burley. Burley nuttiness doesn't always sit well with me, but this isn't intrusive in this blend. I also don't find many of the bitey qualities that sometimes emerge in burley blends, although that may be because I have taken the advice of other reviewers and sipped at it rather than pushing for the big smoke clouds that I look for in lat-forward mixtures.

Only a couple of bowls in to this, so still a novice with it, but I can see why this has gained such longevity. A contemplative blend, I think. It has a slightly fruity aftertaste that lingers pleasantly. It does burn quite warm for me, but perhaps because I am still seeking to push it slightly harder than I should; even taking that into account, there is no bitterness to be found in the few bowls I have enjoyed.

Recommended but not stellar, enjoyable and to be bought again.

An aromatic this is not.. and an English this is not. It's OK but it's a little rough on my throat and has zero aromatic qualities IMO. Sometimes a little plum-like but at others sickly on my palette. I had to try it, but will never buy it again. I even dumped a bowl's worth out of a pouch into the garbage, which I have only ever done with Comoy's Cask #2.

I think the can I got of this was old. It had no casing smell when I opened it. It smelled burley, and not much else. Lighting it was easy. It caught immediately. It tasted very nutty. It reminded me of eating roasted pecans and walnuts, not unpleasant but not one I'd keep in my usual rotation. I may try another can some day, just to see if I can get the flavors and aromas others have talked about in the earlier reviews.
