Sutliff Tobacco Company Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend

(2.84)
A pleasing aromatic with a nutty sweet burley, gold cavendish, and flavored black cavendish taste. These tobaccos are combined with fruity plum and wine notes, along with a slight flavor push from a hint of Latakia for added sweetness and body. A harmonious blend that burns cool and slowly for full enjoyment.
Notes: Created in 1946, the blending was done under the personal supervision of Edward G. Robinson himself.

Edward G Robinson was one of our greatest actors of all times, hands down. Loved every movie he made. Now his pipe tobacco. I really purchased this tin,or can I say to put in my collection stash, but I thought I would try a bowl. Well, that was an experience. I would think that for a person that wanted a daily smoke, this would be a no. One bowl to say you tried it, yes. No wonder Edward always played mean parts. This stuff is really hard to describe. Little nutty, weedy, musty.lots of white billowing smoke. I took it right out of the can. I would think it would be best to let it dry for a bit. Smoked very wet. Pipe gurgle in about the third draw on the pipe, and it wasn’t the pipe. So having a can that has his picture on it is a plus. But that is a far as it goes. $9 a can is cheap for Little Ceaser on the shelf, you dirty rat.

This is such a mild old time smoke, reminds me very much of Kentucky Club for those who may remember that one. Yes, it can be a tongue biter for those who puff furiously. According to Hacker's book it has been around since just after WWII. Another one of those mild early morning smokes that goes well with your coffee.

I really wanted to like this blend but I found it pretty awful. It has a kinda cheap red wine taste that was just horrible and the Burely was totally masked by it.I tried and tried but what can you do. Some one else might dig this and I try to be open minded but if a friend asked me..well you get the picture.

I think this is one of the worst baccy's ive stuffed in my pipe.I got the big tub as a birthday gift and dont know what to do with the rest of it.I keep trying to blend it with other baccys and nothing has took yet.It seems to foul everything i mix it with. It burned very hot and had an awful acidic taste to it that stuck with my pipe.I will never buy this tobacco. Note:maybe if i put it at the back of the cabinet and come back to it in a year, things may taste different? Awful!

This is a fine blend, a blend I enjoy when I don’t really want either aromatic or non aromatic.

The tin note is fantastic. The ribbon cut is quite long and bigger cut than most others. The moisture level is perfect.

I can really taste the wine flavouring, very sour on the tip of my tongue, but very pleasant and not at all overpowering. The tobacco flavours come through nicely.

No tongue bite at all for me.

I will certainly buy another tin or two to age.

To my tastes and experience, this is a sleeper blend that I am really tempted to buy by the tub. The burleys are probably the most present and obvious component of the blend, with their nutty, woody, slightly chocolatey flavors and aromas. But it’s the balancing act that really makes this shine. The artisans of this resurrected, old school melange put just the right amount latakia, cavendish and black cavendish to never sublimate or take away from the quality burleys. In fact, if I were to smell this in the tin without knowing the condimental addition of the latakia, I wouldn’t necessarily guess it was there. And only with careful, meditative smoking (in the right pipe) will you notice that familiar herbal smokiness of the latakia. The cut is a lovely rough and wide cut ribbon with such a perfect moisture (juuuust dry enough for a consistent ember). And then, the “cherry on top” is the plum top note which is never more than a gentle, sweet suggestion. Easily 4 stars for this classic King of the OTCs.

If I were to compare this to anything, it would be Epiphany, but with more burley, and less latakia (and no perique). But I prefer this one to that.

I was anxious to try this after reading many of the reviews. Not too bad, but nothing too special for me. I purchased a 1.5 oz tin. Upon opening, the tobacco was dry - not crunchy dry - but totally dry to the touch. There wasn't much in the way of tin note, either. Deep inhalation brought out a subtle sweetness with a very (and I mean very) faint berry-like smell, and if I didn't read the descriptions before-hand, I wouldn't have managed to come up with that. Loading and lighting were pretty easy and there was no difficulty keeping it lit. What I got, taste wise, was the subtle "wine-like" note described by others and an overall mouthfeel of mild mustiness, but not in a bad way. I attributed this to the presence of Latakia. I couldn't taste the Latakia per se as you would in a Dunhill mixture, but its presence was made known to me. It burned a little hot and I experienced a bit of bite in a way that I experience when I do smoke a predominately Latakia mixture.

Personally, I give this 2.5 stars. Summing up...a nice codger blend, but a bit too pricey for what you get .

Sutliff- Edward G. Robinson

I really wanted to love this blend, I really thought I did, but alas in the end it was better to have loved and let go. This blend upon opening the tin had me excited, I was ready to jump in and smoke away.

This is a mix of shredded find paper looking tobacco, that loads easily with some twigs in it. The blend is never overpowering and packs relatively easily, it’s very harsh at times, I enjoyed this blend the first few smokes and could pick out the flavors, after finishing a tin and opening another the blend seemed muddled and all of its combined parts seemed like a mess more than a masterpiece.

This blend or my taste buds changed and therefore I cannot give a great recommendation. I will not buy this again sorry to say as I thought this would be my favorite blend and an all day smoke but no.

Very good aroma. Cinnamon, fresh cut grass, hint of toast. Very easy burn (2 match) right down to ash. Taste is almost non existent with a tiny bit of an ashy edge feel. Fine for an unobtrusive, undemanding all day smoke, if you're into that (i'm not). Otherwise, if yummy smelling tobacco that doesn't need a lot of match work is what you're looking for, there are other better aromatic options.

I should say that I tried this three times, and each time found it lacking.

It took me a while to get around to trying this one, but I finally did and was a little let down overall. I will start with the positive attributes of this and then move on to the negatives.

On the good side. This may have one of the best tin notes my nose has ever smelled and the side stream is equally appealing. In this respect it is pretty pleasurable.

On the down side I found this blend to be just too mild for my tastes. I will start with the topping. It is kind of a fruity tasting topping that is not bad at all. It is very lightly applied, which I usually prefer so I can enjoy both the underlying leaf and the topping together. In this case the underlying leaf is barely there. Maybe this is due to a large percentage of burley and a miniscule amount of latakia. The blend just lacks any boldness in flavor. It could use something stout to help it out IMO.

I don't want anyone to get me wrong as I had a few good smokes out of it, but none of them were memorable. A problem I tend to have with weaker blends such as these as I can end up pulling harder in an attempt to get more flavor and this can cause heat and tongue irritation, something I did experience with this blend.

So if you like your blends on the stronger side, I would avoid this one. I won't be repurchasing it, but I can also see where those who like their blends on the lighter side would rave over this one.
