Sutliff Tobacco Company Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend
(2.84)
A pleasing aromatic with a nutty sweet burley, gold cavendish, and flavored black cavendish taste. These tobaccos are combined with fruity plum and wine notes, along with a slight flavor push from a hint of Latakia for added sweetness and body. A harmonious blend that burns cool and slowly for full enjoyment.
Notes: Created in 1946, the blending was done under the personal supervision of Edward G. Robinson himself.

I am not an aromatic smoker. I prefer "English" blends or "codger" Burleys like Carter Hall or the new Edgeworth RR remake. I purchased this with some trepidation. Will my poor tongue be the scorched victim of my curiosity? What a very pleasant surprise! Open the tin and the aroma is mildly aromatic, not overpowering, very pleasing, not soapy, strange or candy like. The blend lights up easily, the moisture level is just right not too wet or dry (however it did require a few relights). It's a ribbon cut tobacco composed of some various shades of brown Burleys and a bit of brown-black tobacco, perhaps the Black Cavendish or Latakia. EGR's Pipe blend smokes like a mellow, nutty Burley but with a bit more sweetness and a mild fruit flavor that is plum like not at all like a chewing gum or candy, a taste that is very pleasant and not syrupy or cloying. No weird or soap flavors here. No tongue bite at all only smooth and silky smoke. Not much Latakia here to comment on but enough to be noticeable and truly enhance the smoking experience as a skillfully added condiment. This will become a regular in my current rotation.

Sutliff - Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend.
The ribbons are pretty coarse, and the most of them are medium, or a lighter shade of brown; at a quick glance it just looks like a medium brown blend. When I look at the blend intensely I can see a small amount of black specks, though. The moisture's good and the aroma isn't exactly suggestive of any sort of topping.
E.G.R. is easy to ignite, and burns well right away. Of the aromatic additions, the first one to jump out at me is the cinnamon. Around the halfway point I begin to get a 'tang' of liquor; I'd go as far as saying I'd expect a few people to view this as being slightly sour? The tobacco tastes are mainly Burley and Cavendish, the Latakia is barely noticeable.... actually, it's unnoticeable. I've heard/read a bit of contention regarding whether or not this is a biter, and I must say, it bites me!
The room-note isn't particularly offensive, and the nicotine's medium.
Hmmm, Edward G. Robinson? Well, if I'm honest I wouldn't be bothered if there was a cessation in it's production! But to be fair, I've smoked a lot worse.
Somewhat recommended.

Opening the tin you get a very pleasant raisony smell from the ribbon cut cavendish, burley, and latakia tobaccos. The tobacco is somewhat moist and I found difficult to keep lit. After letting it sit the tin for a few days it dried nicely and it becomes much easier to keep lit. This blend has a nice sweet taste with a slight smokey aftertaste (from the latakia I guess). The liquor topping is not overpowering and enchants the overall flavor of the blend. EGR is rare aromatic blend that tastes like tobacco. I will keep this blend in my rotation.

The review by JimInks pretty much sums up my opinion of this blend. The touch of latakia works well with the burley and the wine casing. A gentle aromatic providing a mild and tasty experience. This is not something I will enjoy every day. But for those times when I crave something slightly sweet and non offensive to others, this will do just fine. I'm delighted that EGR is back!

Back when I was starting a pipe, many moons ago, I always meant to try EGR but never got around to it. It was on most drugstore counters. (My first pick was the short lived Burgundy). Now I figured I'd better have a shot at it, if nothing else for old times sake. I have a soft spot for the old timey burley blends.
Popping the top: a medium to dark brown, not quite flakes but short ribbons. A bit moist. No overwhelming casing-I pretty much smell and see burley and something almost "berry-ish" but very mild. Easy to pack and light. Starts out mild, mostly taste burley here. As the packaging says it is minimally aromatic and the flavor faintly reminds me of Sir Walter Aromatic which is flavored with cognac. Taste/flavor develop nicely down the bowl. I've never discerned the latakia. Pretty smooth. It's mild enough I could imagine a strong aromatic smoker pulling a bit hard to develop the flavor, when sipped it's cool. I would recommend this to a regular burley smoker who wants only a bit of flavor to go with the smoke. I could see this being someone's everyday/all day choice. Simple, minimal frills, good old stuff. Smokes great in my old falcon pipe.

Opening a fresh tin of Edward G. Robinson I was greeted with dark and light brown ribbons with scattered black flecks. It smelled of smokiness with a light plum note. The moisture tended to the drier side which is perfect for me. An unlit sip tasted of plum, as did the initial light along with a light sour note. Overall it tasted mostly of plum with a light smokiness every so often. It was a little spicy, and the second half of the bowl seemed to make the plum taste richer. Unfortunately this blend burned me in every pipe I tried and every cadence I experimented with, it just didn’t work for me, and I would guess that has to do with body chemistry at this point. It could be nice for light aromatic lovers that it doesn’t set ablaze.

Well, I got my sample today. Filled my Medico Ebony apple. The tobacco packed easy, lit easy and I was off to the races. I was really impressed with this tobacco. Not complex, easy, no fuss, no muss and burned to a fine grey ash. I get no tongue bite at all and I could taste the tobacco. Does anyone else taste clove in this?

I became curious about this tobacco after reading an article about its name sake in a back issue of a pipe magazine. The article stated that it is the same blend as the original and therefore a sort of time capsule. This tobacco is good for what it is; an unpretentious straight forward "drug store" tobacco. It has some real tobacco taste with just a slight nuance of flavoring, which came off as anise to me. The bowl goes quickly with this tobacco, yet I did not experience any tongue bite. Overall, this tobacco provided me with a very pleasant experience. There is nothing complicated about it, yet it provides a consistent and enjoyable smoke. The historical aspect also lends to the tobacco. The article I read stated that this blend is based off of Robinson's favorite Dunhill blend and was a best seller throughout the late 40s and 50s. Although this blend is no Dunhill, it is a great way to experience what pipesters of the past enjoyed.

I was actually very surprised by this blend. It was actually quite tasty for what it is. Nothing fancy but quite pleasant. A winner for the Field and Stream crowd. 3 solid stars.

My one experience with this blend was twenty years ago. I bought it because of the actor. He was a fine actor and a fellow pipe enthusiast - so why not. The pouch aroma was decent enough. There were light brown and black strands in it at the time. Back then there may have been some cavendish in it as well. Sorry to say, the pouch I bought bit as well. As I remember it my pouch was somewhat dry. Things have changed in twenty years - look at Dunhill. If you want to try it go ahead. I would try this again before buying certain other drug store tobaccos.
