Sutliff Tobacco Company Edward G. Robinson's Pipe Blend

(2.84)
A pleasing aromatic with a nutty sweet burley, gold cavendish, and flavored black cavendish taste. These tobaccos are combined with fruity plum and wine notes, along with a slight flavor push from a hint of Latakia for added sweetness and body. A harmonious blend that burns cool and slowly for full enjoyment.
Notes: Created in 1946, the blending was done under the personal supervision of Edward G. Robinson himself.

First off, let me say, I was really pulling for this one. I like the idea of companies continuing older blends, and I fully intend on checking out some others in the future, but, honestly, did Edward G. Robinson ever smoke his own brand? If he did, and allowed his face to be plastered all over the tub, my respect for him just went down several notches. This stuff is awful—and, it most definitely bites. I smoked it every which way, fast, slow, medium, no matter what I did, it nipped me. Now, I will admit that this stuff does have a unique taste, but the bite ruins it for me. So, if you like smoking church incense (and who knows what else, this is an additive stew), and don't give a damn about holding onto your tongue, I'd say avoid this one like the plague!

Oh, and, by the way, I'd like to thank (or not) 4noggins for allowing us pipe smokers to buy this rot without having to purchase an entire tub. It's a good idea to make OTC's available in bulk. I wouldn't have tried this blend otherwise.

Cheers!

::::Update:::: I've noticed since the tin version of this stuff has come out 4noggins has quit selling it in bulk. Sorry if I misled anyone.

As did others, I wanted to like this as I'm always on the lookout for aromatics as a change of pace. However after almost finishing a small tin, that was not possible. The tin smell, cut, and ease of packing were fine. The taste was just OK, hard to describe but certainly not overly sweet. It did not leave a wet residue, but did smoke fairly quickly.

The kicker, as many others have stated, was the bite. It occurred in everything from cobs to a Dunhill, and even when I had not smoked for a while. Wound up throwing out two or three bowls worth.

I tried to like this, I really did. I wanted to like it. I have nothing against a rough, manly smoke...but the more I smoked this, and it hasn't been often, the less I was able to talk myself into giving it a break. It's good, I suppose, to have stashed away in case of extreme emergencies - but honestly, if you're paying good money for tobacco, you can do better. Yes, it smells good in the package and while burning - but, yes, it does burn your tongue, and yes,it does taste terrible. I'm sorry. I love the packaging, I love the history and that Sutliff tried to bring it back...but, man oh man it's really low rent on the mouth. Listen - buy the Beck's Ol' Limey Bastard. You want a great tobacco, try that out. For the same amount of money you will have your socks knocked off. I love the packaging and the idea on this one, but the tobacco itself is dog puke...and dog puke that burns, at that.

Edward G Robinson was one of our greatest actors of all times, hands down. Loved every movie he made. Now his pipe tobacco. I really purchased this tin,or can I say to put in my collection stash, but I thought I would try a bowl. Well, that was an experience. I would think that for a person that wanted a daily smoke, this would be a no. One bowl to say you tried it, yes. No wonder Edward always played mean parts. This stuff is really hard to describe. Little nutty, weedy, musty.lots of white billowing smoke. I took it right out of the can. I would think it would be best to let it dry for a bit. Smoked very wet. Pipe gurgle in about the third draw on the pipe, and it wasn’t the pipe. So having a can that has his picture on it is a plus. But that is a far as it goes. $9 a can is cheap for Little Ceaser on the shelf, you dirty rat.

I really wanted to like this blend but I found it pretty awful. It has a kinda cheap red wine taste that was just horrible and the Burely was totally masked by it.I tried and tried but what can you do. Some one else might dig this and I try to be open minded but if a friend asked me..well you get the picture.

I think this is one of the worst baccy's ive stuffed in my pipe.I got the big tub as a birthday gift and dont know what to do with the rest of it.I keep trying to blend it with other baccys and nothing has took yet.It seems to foul everything i mix it with. It burned very hot and had an awful acidic taste to it that stuck with my pipe.I will never buy this tobacco. Note:maybe if i put it at the back of the cabinet and come back to it in a year, things may taste different? Awful!

“Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?” I love the actor and knowing he was a renowned pipe smoker I felt that I couldn’t go wrong with this blend. I jumped in with both feet and bought a tub. That proved to be a big mistake. Trying to avoid being bitten while simultaneously trying to keep the tobacco lit is an exercise in futility. This blend has very little taste and smells of cheap red wine. The Latakia that drew me to this blend was present in the tub note but I couldn’t taste it when smoking. This blend was an utter disappointment.

An aromatic this is not.. and an English this is not. It's OK but it's a little rough on my throat and has zero aromatic qualities IMO. Sometimes a little plum-like but at others sickly on my palette. I had to try it, but will never buy it again. I even dumped a bowl's worth out of a pouch into the garbage, which I have only ever done with Comoy's Cask #2.
