Worse than garbage.
I kept seeing reviews about how great this old-school, OTC tobacco was; how this stuff tastes like pipes smell... so I was eager to try it. I did and I can honestly say it is among the worst I have ever tried. It has none of the complexity you would get from an English blend and none of the pleasant qualities of an aromatic.
In the tin it smells like chewing tobacco and when burnt it smells and tastes like a filthy cigarette. Indeed, its flavor note is somewhere between stale cigarettes and a gas station cigar. Just plain disgusting.
If it is true that this was one of the ubiquitous OTC tobaccos of the days when men commonly smoked pipes, then I can completely understand why pipe smoking went out of fashion.
To be clear, I am no pipe snob. (I love me some Captain Black). But this stuff is like a low[er] rent version of Prince Albert.
Pros: easy to pack Cons: everything else
If anyone would like a free tub of it you can pick it up at the curb in front of my house; act quickly because the garbage gets picked up on Thursdays.

This will be an honest review and as my thoughts come to me, so bear with me...
I'm not new to pipe smoking, however, this was my first smoke in a new pipe (honey coated btw), since I've been away from the pipe for the last two years. I had never heard of CH (crazy, I know), but when I discovered it, I decided to dive in and buy a full 14oz tub, if nothing else to have a "backup" smoke in case I ran out of the "good stuff". I do not have a "refined palate" for tobacco and frankly have poor tastebuds in general, so I'll give you the impression from this perspective...
-In the tub, it smells almost like there's a light topping, yet there is none. It's not a smell you will be enveloped in. It smells good, not great, but not off-putting, if that makes sense. The smell is forgettable, if I'm calling a spade a spade.
-It smoked cool. Granted, I'm not a newbie to pipe smoking and know how to do the advanced breathing method (if you don't know what that is, you owe it to yourself to learn it). so possibly the smoke stayed relatively cool for a new pipe because I know how to smoke that method.
-It had little to no tongue presence or bite.
-It tasted pretty bland (Dunhill Nightcap was always my fav before I quit for a while, so take that with a grain of salt)
-It is the type of tobacco you could smoke all day, get plenty of pleasure from, yet forget as soon as you put your pipe down.
-I was unimpressed, yet not disgusted by it, in the least.
So, I'll give it a solid 3 stars for it's ability to get me back into the leaf without a bad experience and also break in my new pipe with a fairly bland burley presence. Overall, I would recommend to all new pipe smokers. This is a good place to start your journey!

Carter Hall is fine cut burley. It lights well and stays lit. I found a taste of cocoa in the mix. That's it! Good old dependable Carter Hall. I guess I never saw the appeal. I bought a pouch once, had a pipeful and threw the rest away. I have nothing against OTC tobaccos. Carter Hall is just not enjoyable to me. To each his own.
Edit: I thought about adding a star as the pouch I purchased was not an ordinary pouch. It was a 'Luxury Pouch". Nah, one star is fine.

This is cheap chemical stuff at it's best, yuk! I smoked half a bowl and threw the whole tin in the trash. It was that bad!

This was the mystery tobacco at a pipe smoking contest that I was a part of a couple of years ago. I smoked it in a Bing style Dunhill. The pipe did survive, but had to be thoroughly cleaned and reamed afterwards. My mouth was sore for a week. Fast, slow, it did not matter. The Taste started off bland and but moved to gym socks by mid bowl. Foul stuff indeed. No, I didn't win the contest. The poor chap who did had to drink nothing but ice water for 6 days....
