Peterson Wild Atlantic

(3.20)
This elegant blend comprises of loose cut ripe orange Virginia, fine Oriental leaves and a premium quality latakia from the Balkans. The generous amount of latakia provides this rich blend with its unique English character and a traditional smoky note.

This one is definitely one of the stronger tasting ones I've tried. I can't really describe the smell, it's a bit like burning Chinese incense, tolerable but not a big fan. Takes some time to get used to this flavor.

A fine, smooth English with just enough Latakia to keep a man busy. Similar to Old Dublin but with slightly less Latakia. Suitable for an all day smoke.

Added a pouch of this to my most recent tobacco order on a whim. I'm glad I did.

Pouch note is predominantly smoky Latakia, with Oriental in the background. I can't detect much Virginia at this point, if at all.

Packing and lighting is easy since it's a nice ribbon cut and I found the moisture to be ideal fresh from the pouch. Some might prefer to give it a little drying time, but no doubt it'll dry nicely in the pouch as it rattles around my work bag.

Upon lighting the Orientals take a front seat, and it reminds me of Dunhill EMP. In fact, the whole experience reminded me of EMP, if a little less nuanced. The Latakia is there but could be stronger, at least for me. Those who don't like a Lat-forward blend but still enjoy it in the mid-or-background would probably like this a lot.

Easy to smoke all day, but makes an ideal morning smoke for me. Come the evening I prefer something more interesting, with more body. This is by no means a bad baccy, but it could be more interesting.

I've got about 10g of Kendal Exmoor Mixture left, which I find similar but more Latakia heavy, and I'm tempted to mix it into this to give it a bit of a kick.

Why: You want to get a pouch that is above par and have likely experienced one of the four pouches from Peterson or want to try them. Wild Atlantic leans in the Latakia/Virginia direction with some Oriental/Turkish. It makes it an English blend.

Looks: Ocean with an island on a turquoise pouch package. Open it up for a gold reflective inside like the other four pouches have. Bust the seal and you get ribbons pressed into a pouch shape that you break up with your fingers without too much trouble. The Virginia is Red and the latakia darker in with brown Oriental/Turkish. Red Virginia from Peterson is amazing and helps turn this blend into a top pouch.

Using?: You can use it right out of the pouch. It is designed to work without drying out. It keeps well just in the package without a mason jar making it a carry around pouch. The ribbons are fairly long and large so get your pipe tool ready to pack.

Result: The latakia is made mild and not heavy in that taste by the red Virginia and Oriental/Turkish added to it. A great day to day afternoon pipe tobacco that is neither too strong or too light. A medium smooth enjoyable pipe tobacco taste that is a notch up from an early morning starter. Burns medium to quickly and not too much smoke. Room note is light. Your expectation is to spend half hour max on the bowl but will likely be gone before that because you like it.

Conclusion: If you try the Peterson pouches you will find that the four are variable to cover the range of usual pipe tobaccos and then you know which one you want more often. I really like Connemara black and have Wild Atlantic as number two Peterson pouch with Aran and Irish Mist last. Peterson pouches are good quality tobaccos but which one you like most requires trying them all out. They are not the expensive tins but they are far from cheap pouches. It really is Peterson quality tobacco made affordable.

Very nice English blend. Mild in strength yet with a good dose of nicotine with Virginias giving it body and Latakia taking center stage without being overwhelming. Strikes a nice balance between the Latakia smokiness which is smooth and reminds me a little of the aroma of ground coffee and the mildly sour and nutty flavours οf the Orientals. Could be an all day English. No bite and burning qualities are good but it gives με a little tingle in the throat. It’s not the most complex blend around but it’s good.

This blend or in this case bland, should be called Mild Atlantic. The design of the packaging of the pouch is very nice, reminiscent of the design of the label on a bottle of Talisker Storm Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Beyond the packaging I find nothing to recommend here. I certainly enjoy a mild yet flavorful English style blend. It need not be a "Latakia bomb" or loaded with exotic Orientals for me to enjoy it. In fact I enjoy a number of "American" English blends that are themselves quite mild. However this blend is as flavorful as cardboard. While Latakia and Orientals should be prominent from the product description neither are particularly noticeable. There is a hint of Latakia but I don't sense any of the spiciness of or the sour n' sweet taste of Orientals. The mouth feel is thin and Virginia like and there is that nasty alkaline tongue tingle of Virginia tobaccos. I would surmise that this blend primarily is composed of bland Virginian tobaccos with a pinch of Latakia and a pinch of some bland Oriental. While I see others seem to enjoy it, this a blend that I would not recommend.

Not so balanced Orientals and Virginia tobaccos: in my opinion, there are too much Orientals and too little Virginia (instead, Latakia is in the right quantity and good quality). It hasn't a lot of body (compared to others EM) and in the second half it doesn't evolve. However, a good quality EM, light and just for every day.

A medium-light EM, balanced but without any peaks. Its strenghth is its price, and it's a good blend for light-hearted puffs and as a first approach to EMs. 3,5/5 in my personal rating system.

Not too heavy, not too light. Perfect for all day smoke, full of flavour. The Orientals take the centre stage but by no means downplay the smokiness of the Latakia, the natural sweetness of the Virginia always gave a strong support to the smoke and it shows no domination! Very very nice! The unlit tobacco does have a touch of flavouring, smells like a little bit of fruity wine. The colour is beautiful, very fine cut ribbon!
