Peterson Wild Atlantic

(3.20)
This elegant blend comprises of loose cut ripe orange Virginia, fine Oriental leaves and a premium quality latakia from the Balkans. The generous amount of latakia provides this rich blend with its unique English character and a traditional smoky note.

I was gifted a pouch of Wild Atlantic from a Peterson pipe rep I met on St Patty's day. I smoked this today and was blown away by it. The tobacco was perfect out of the pouch and the taste from first light was amazing. The smoky Latakia is perfect and does not over power the smoke. Bowl stayed lit during the entire smoke and burned to a one ash without any tobacco being left behind. I love this blend and will look forward to my next bowl. I don't always smoke English blends but will put this in my standard rotation and will most likely purchase again.

A mellow one in terms of Englishes, as far as I can tell. This derives from the fact that it has only a small amount of Latakia compared to others. Tin note is fantastic, nice, smokey scents of Latakia with citrus-y highlights. Requires 10-15 minutes of drying, in my experience. You want to smoke it slow, ideally from a wide-chambered pipe. Lesser, cooler smoke is the essence to experience it's mildly latakian taste. Room note is surprisingly tolerable, compared to other Englishes or Balkans, though still stiff and potentially disturbing to non-smokers. Another excepcion among Englishes, it has an aquired taste in warm weather as well, though it still has a better mood in rainy or cold weather. Pair it with, for example, blended whiskey, but not something much stronger, you don't want this masterpiece to be dominated by the taste of strong alcohol. Find it ideal for latakia-virgins as well.

Somehow I missed this one when it was still in production, but recently found a pouch of old inventory at a brick and mortar. The date on the price tag puts this at almost seven years of age! It did not seem overly dry to me and had a very complex mix of aromas: medium-roast coffee, brown sugar, potato peel, beef jerky, and sweet cream. Quite a combination!

Flavorwise plenty of sweet Turkish flavor with notes of baking spices, poppy seed, and (unsalted) pretzel, and smooth, savory ripe orange Virginia. No negative tastes like grassy chlorophyll from unripe Virginias, or creosote-laden Latakia. I can’t taste the coffee but still smell it in the ambient aroma (I don’t know if Peterson has used a “washed” Latakia curing method, something I’ve done myself with sweetened water and coffee).

This is a savory blend without any discernible sweetness but it is hardly hardcore or austere and the impressive panoply of flavors provides pleasure from start to finish. Nary a harsh note to be had. I suspect this was dropped because of poor sales, but I would encourage Peterson to give it a new and less fanciful name and put it in a tin. I would certainly stock a good number of tins in my cellar!

Tin note of smoky, herds and tangy. Tobacco is a ribbon cut of brown, tan and black. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and very consistent, with notes of smoky incense, spicy, floral, spices, bitter dry wood, orange peel/zest, sour vinegary fermented, musty herbal vegetation, leather, toast, sweet grass, earthy, savory, a tart and tangy lemony background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Oriental/Turkish and Virginia supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

The perfect english mixture! Tasty and strong Latakia but never overwhelming. Nice nicotine content but not overpowered. Just the right amount of everything. All I wish for in this kind of mixture!

My friend Nico got this for me in Ireland for my birthday. He travels quite often and always remember his friends, myself included. Ok on with the review. This blend was sold in the U.S. for a very short period of time, maybe a couple of months. Anyway it disappeared. So I was very pleased to receive this pouch. It is a mild English blend with a mild sweetness. Not sure if it comes from the Virginia or the topping. There are other flavors in the background but was unable to tell what they may have been. But the stars are, as always in English blends, latakia and oriental/Turkish tobaccos. They are well balanced along with the Virginias. It lights very easily and burns to a nice clean white ash with little to no tobacco pieces left in bottom of bowl. No tongue bite and never got harsh. Taste pretty much the same from beginning to end. One thing that i liked and discovered quite by accident, I filled up a bowl and started it but notice the time and was unable to finish it. So I just left it at work. The next morning I reached for it to load and saw it was mostly unsmoked, so waste not, want not, I fired it up and man oh man was I surprised. It was great. Not harsh or bitter. Mild enough for all day smoking. Had the last bowl yesterday. Goodbye old friend, until we meet again.

A fine, smooth English with just enough Latakia to keep a man busy. Similar to Old Dublin but with slightly less Latakia. Suitable for an all day smoke.

Not too heavy, not too light. Perfect for all day smoke, full of flavour. The Orientals take the centre stage but by no means downplay the smokiness of the Latakia, the natural sweetness of the Virginia always gave a strong support to the smoke and it shows no domination! Very very nice! The unlit tobacco does have a touch of flavouring, smells like a little bit of fruity wine. The colour is beautiful, very fine cut ribbon!

A solid 4 out of 4
