I agree that the tin needs a bit of drying out when purchased, but I still enjoyed the first smoke right away. The whiskey flavour is very subtle, but the blend is great. After trying most of the Peterson blends, for me this is at the top alongside the University, and is great experience when enjoyed with a tumbler of Jameson neat.

This tobacco belongs to the same category as Erinmore Flake: either you love it, either you hate it. Period.

I really enjoy it. It's very tasty, the casing while being very present does not "step over" the tobacco taste and the nicotine level is satisfactory. Mainly, the whiskey casing reveals itself clearly, the Burleys and Dark fired kentucky play along resulting in a sweet, nutty and slightly smoky combination. I can't detect any VAs in here, they must be in smal proportion.

If I may, a friendly advice: You have to ensure first that the moisture level has significantly reduced before trying this very good tobacco. After you opened the tin, let it dry out for half a day or so, then close it and let it sit for a minimum of a couple weeks before you try your first pipeful. Then you might have a more positive encounter with it because the tobacco taste will come through and you will not have to put up with multiple relights.

I do not think that new pipe smokers should try this blend. Despite being significantly different, Sunset Breeze or Sweet Killarney would be a more appropriate choice to start experimenting with Peterson's tobaccos.

I love it!

I really enjoyed this tobacco and it has the distinction of being the first aromatic blend I would buy again.

I totally agree with the other reviews that suggest letting the tobacco breathe a bit before you are able to enjoy it. When first opened, the casing is so concentrated it does not smell at all like whiskey . The smell is like some kind of industrial cleaner and the first few bowls tasted like (I imagine) the stuff the Luftwaffe used to fuel the Me-163.

However, after opening and closing the can for several bowls, the flavor mellowed to the point where I could detect the whisky in the tin. At one point it smelled more like a scotch with a hint of peat. Lit up, the taste was strong and unique with a slight whiskey taste. I'm new to pipes and have found I prefer English/Balkan blends. Irish Whisky is strong and tasty like the English blends I've tried but less complex in flavor.

I especially enjoyed Irish Whiskey compared to the sweet aromatics I have been trying (and also enjoying) since I started with pipes in 12/08. Previously, I smoked cigars for ten years.

This one really took a long time to creep up on me. I opened the tin in fall of 2006, found the smell rather overwhelming but gave it a few tries. I really did not like it at all. There was no taste or aroma of whiskey that I could identify, but some other very strong flavor that actually made me feel queasy. It's not the nicotine as I don't get that effect with Brown Rope, Kendal Dark Shag, etc. I finally gave up on it and put it in the humidor, periodically going back to it and liking it better as it aired-out. Since then I have tried and enjoyed Irish Flake, and having come to like that tobacco I found the taste of Irish Whiskey to be to my liking, as well. At this point most of the strong aroma has passed, and now I can actually detect the irish whiskey. It is a good change of pace for Irish Flake and I think I will likely always want to have some of this on hand.

By God! The moment I opened the tin, I was struck by a similarity of aroma with Irish Flake! Which, I assess, is explained by the fact that both are Burley dominant blends. Granted my previous experiment with IF, I was unsure of my intentions towards this tobacco. Having faced worse adverse conditions in the past, I mocked myself and filled in my pipe.

I regard IW as being a ready-rubbed and smoother version of IF, regardless of the reality that IW is anterior to IF. And contrary to IF, I get along very well thank you with IW. The tobacco is dark brown, with a faint aroma of liquor and a good aroma of pure tobacco.

The nicotine content is satisfactory, the mixture smokes nicely, evenly and without bite. Mrs First Sealord is quite pleased with the room note. But this is not for neophyte smokers, but for the more experienced group of our noble fraternity. Midshipmen, gain your experience, then you will be able to enjoy this fine tobacco when you will have integrated some leadership!

This new addition to my regular rotation will always accompany me at sea. This represents a high quality burly blend with an incomparable, satisfying, rich taste that is both of pure tobacco and a hint of sweetness generated by the Irish whisky topping.

Highly recommended.

I love Kentucky and I love Whiskey!!! For me this one together with ORLIC DARK KENTUCKY and RATTRAY HIGH SOCIETY (both out of production - God knows why!!!) belong in the Holy Triad of Kentucky blends! Thankfully this one has both the Vit.N strength of DARK KENTUCKY and the mild aromatic character of HIGH SOCIETY!!! For me thats the best of the Peterson range!!! After a good meal (required if you don't want to loose your socks off.. 🙂 it beats a premium cigar at any given time! Also, if you have the chance to accompany it with some JAMESON Whiskey (or some other top rate Irish) prepare for some REAL experience! I did...

WELL DONE PETERSON! You did save your reputation and the Irish spirit with this one!!!

Currently I find myself enjoying the full flavor blends containing dark fired tobaccos. IW, for me, falls into this category. I found the tobacco from my tin to be moister than I'd prefer. But, air-drying prior to smoking my second bowl was the trick in allowing the tobacco to show its virtues. The drying also removed the volatile effects of the whiskey, as well as, revealed additional cased sweetness of the blend. That sweetness, not bite, remained on the tongue beyond the smoke. The Virginians, Burley and Kentucky really provide a wonderful complex taste sensation. As Pipestud said, it's not for the novice with its dose of nicotine. Yes, the room note may be a bit assertive, but who cares. These tobaccos are top rate. If your looking for a full flavored cased smoke, filled with a balancing spice, this is it.

A nice new addition. A wonderful surprise Christmas gift from the better half. And a nice, strongish smoke that made it to my rotation in one go.

Lights okay, a few relights here & there are needed, but it might be more due to where I smoke, rather than what... The house bar, where this gets smoked and complimented quite a lot, with even a few asking for a taste, plus the drinks etc... well, they do distract you from the smoking itself 😉 Not so at home, though.

Having been more than a bit put-off by a early half bowl of Borkum Riff Whiskey I was challenged by this, but the aroma is great right from the tin. Lovely bouquet, and the nose-feel says oranges, though I don't know why. Also a faint whiff of whiskey.

Almost from the first instant this one hits your taste buds full force. Sourish at first, and then it turns into a filling, fulfilling and full-taste smoke with nice hints of that Whiskey taste after the first few puffs. The initial transition is nice. Aromatic-wise not overpowering at all, conservative topping. What I also like is that it doesn't go stale or boring at any point until the very last 5%, must be the well-done mix of baccys in this one, or perhaps the Kentucky fired leaf. Burns well all the way down into a darkish ash.

And as noted by a few reviewers, the Nicotine content is quite high. In fact, I really felt a bit dizzy after the first few bowls, hmmm. potent. I like the strength, too.

Doesn't induce tongue burn in the usual aromatic way, though puffing easy is always recommended, as the aroma comes out so much better.

This is one of my favorates. I have smoked this for about a year and have about 2 tins a month. I usually smoke it at night out on the patio with a brandy or a whiskey in my hand as this brings out the best flavour in this blend.
