Peterson Irish Whiskey

(2.74)
A traditional Irish ready rubbed blend renowned for its smooth smoking quality. This blend incorporates various selected Virginias to provide roundness of taste. Kentucky fired, Indian cured and aromatic Thai Burley are also added. Finally, a light spray of Irish Whiskey essence gives this tobacco its unique aroma.

I've always been drawn to alcohol flavored blends. Despite the fact that I no longer drink alcohol, I find it a very pleasant flavoring if done properly. That, and the fact that this contains both Burley and DFK immediately caught my attention.

A nice ribbon cut that makes the packing and lighting very easy. Burns evenly at a rather slow pace, with only a handful of relights required. The Burleys dominate the taste, with a nice bold, earthy, nutty, spicy taste, complemented with a bit of smokiness from the DFK. However, there's also quite a lot of sweetness in this blend, mostly provided by the Virginias and the whiskey flavoring which, though mildly applied and unnoticeable if puffed too hard, makes this blend a lot sweeter than I expected. All of the component tobaccos and the flavoring combine to lead to a very smooth, creamy and satisfying smoke, especially when smoked through a filter, which I recommend for this blend.

Not particularly strong, yet quite flavorful, with a pleasant and quite lingering aftertaste. Very similar in taste to Irish Flake, making me to consider it the milder, sweeter little brother of that one. The more I smoke it, the more I appreciate it and it's slowly becoming one of my favorites in the Burley family. A keeper, for sure.

Tin note of sweet alcohol, vegetation and spices. Tobacco is a mix cut of black, brown and light brown. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium to mild. Flavoring is mild, with notes of Irish Whisky. The sweet whisky is more evident in the first 1/4 but never really goes away, just hangs in the background. Taste is medium to full and moderately consistent, with notes of vanilla flavored alcohol, creamy, sweet nuts, spicy, smoky peaty vegetation, dry, bitter, sweet-toasted bread, savory, sugar, woody, mildly floral, a sweet grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Burley is leading with Kentucky, Virginia and Flavoring supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

This is a very satisfying smoke, and I am finding myself craving it so here are my notes and thoughts.

When you first receive the tin and open it you are greeted with a pretty uniform Peterson ribbon cut. This tobacco loads well, and I had no issues getting it lit or having it stay lit. The tin note is nutty, sweet, and to my untrained palate slightly marshmallowy. Whatever that means to you is anyone's guess.

As I smoke my way through different blends I find that I do love Burley blends in particular and this is a shining example. I find no tongue bite, and generally a smooth consistent smoke. I know this blend has a Irish whiskey topping but I am hard pressed to find it unless I sip slower than usual. The burleys are very much up front with their nuttiness. There is a sweetness inherent in this blend but unlike other reviewers I want to chalk that up to the topping used. The whiskey does not sublimate the tobaccos, but instead gives them a gentle lift in the direction they are already going.

Burns to a fine white ash.

Wonderful, just wonderful. Peterson Irish Whiskey produces smooth and rich smoke. The whiskey in this blend brings nice sweetness to this tobacco, not much taste of whiskey, but hey, Whiskey belongs in your glass not in your tobacco =). In typical Peterson style, this is strong both in flavor and in nicotine content. This was my everyday smoke, but then i noticed that my tin was empty.... This one is something that i will keep on buying more and more.

This is great stuff and is always in my rotation. It has a great amount of nic and tobacco flavor for me and pleasant smell for my wife. She begs me to smoke it around her. It's the perfect compromise. Thanks irish whiskey, you saved my marriage!

A naturally sweet, rich and warm smoke. There are comparably dark tobaccos in the tin, which pack easily and smoke dry to a white, fine ash without gurgling and getting too hot. Clearly a Burley mixture, with a medium to high dose of nicotine. A tad lighter than 3P or Irish Flake, but richer and more interesting than Sherlock Holmes. Light "whiskey" topping tastes and smells great, slightly floral, spicy and very consistent over the whole bowl. Zero tongue-bite. Great cigarillo-like taste if retrohaled, slightly tingly on the tongue and in the nose. I find the room note to be pleasant, a bit like fresh sawdust. If you like dark, full tastes (like Royal Yacht, Irish Flake, Best Brown Flake), you should try this one. Have to agree with a review below who wrote that IW makes you hungry. I find Burley blends generally be good appetizers. For what it's worth: Peterson's Irish Whiskey is a staple in my rotation.

Being new to pipe smoking and having a love of Irish whiskey, this was my first choice of tobacco and I'm glad it was too! Both the taste and the smell was very pleasant and with only one light, I found this very easy to sit, relax and read a book with. The taste of tobacco I didn't find too overpowering but if you're not used to strong tasting tobacco's, like the taste you get with a good cigar, I'd try something a little more mild first.

After waiting several years for my local shop to get Peterson tobaccos in stock, I was pleasantly surprised today to see several. I was stuck between choosing Irish Whiskey and Sherlock Holmes, so I had my wife choose. Since I love Irish whiskey, she chose this blend. I am very glad she did. I was very pleasantly surprised after smoking a bowl immediately upon opening. I had absolutely no problems with this tobacco going out, right out of the can. I expected to have to relight due to dampness many others mentioned. Once I lit the bowl, I did not have to relight once.

Admittedly, the first few puffs were rather strong, and induced some mild coughing fits. However, those fits quickly died off, and Irish Whiskey proved to be a very smooth and pleasant smoke. I really didn't taste any Irish Whiskey flavor, but am looking forward to it as this tobacco ages. I think this should be called Irish Whiskey for another reason. I love to drink a glass of Jameson while smoking a bowl of tobacco. This particular tobacco enhanced the smoothness and taste of the Jameson to the point it was almost heaven. I enjoy Jameson, but I don't think I've enjoyed it this much. I can tell this is going to prove to be a treasured Sunday afternoon combination.

Funny, this mixture has changed since last time I smoked it. It was a ready rubbed flake when I smoked in 08, with a stronger aroma.

Now the cut is like Sherlock Holmes and the smell very similar. The taste is different as well, deeper, more persistant in a good way.

I love it. Packs some good Vitamine N, smokes well and satisfies me.

I am wondering if I don't like this new format better. I think i do.

This is my favorite cased Burley ever. I smoke it regularly.

It is very important that you let this tobacco dry out extensively before smoking it (3-4 weeks)because it is not lightly flavored with Irish Whiskey but rather heavily flavored with it. If you do not let it dry you will go through a negative experience.

Smoked carefully and with skill - meaning not pushed but smoked slowly, this mixture is very rewarding. The tobacco is bold, rich, sweet and has a nice level of nicotine.

The dark Kentucky is awesome.
