Coming from Ireland I can vouch for the Irish Whisky notes in this blend. Others said they could not detect it but it is definitely there. The taste upon initial lighting is like Bushmills Honey blend. The tobacco is overpowering to smoke and hindered by a harsh cigarette-y nature. I found this difficult to enjoy, even in small quantities. It burns hot straight out of the tin and rewards smokers with a good deal of tongue bite. There is a nutty note to the burley--one of the few redeeming qualities--but the dry cigarette character of the bowl makes this a tough one to like. The nicotine hit is even stronger than Condor, another Irish blend. I think I will give this one a pass in the future. It tastes like a dry pack of Winstons you found under the seat of your car. If I could offer one suggestion to Petersons I would say this blend needs to be cut in half with some good black cavendish. That would mellow out the rough, biting nature of this harsh overpowering blend.

Burley. Chemical casing purporting to taste like whiskey. Mmmmmm...

I LOVE Irish whiskey wisely and well, but would rather sip it neat out of a glass, while smoking something far more entertaining than this.

First bowl: high hopes, first Peterson blend I've tried, anticipated a flavorful, enjoyable smoke......

First light: nothing much to brag about, mid bowl, ok, where's the flavor?....End of bowl, wait a minute, did I just smoke a cigarette?

Second bowl: pretty much same as the first one. The "nic" is definitely there, but so is the taste of cigarettes. I'm not a fan of cigs. That's why I smoke a pipe.

I'm not really sure about this blend. I don't like wasting anything but this one just doesn't do it for me. I guess I could mix something with it but I'm afraid that the ciggy notes will play through anyways.

Will not purchase again. Disappointed.

Oh no. Ooooh nonono.

Irish Whiskey (Or Irish Mixture, as it's called here) is currently my least favourite tobacco blend out there.

Now i like some strong tobaccoes. I enjoy Irish Flake, for instance. I also quite like Samuel Gawith's Black XX Rope cut or Mac Baren's Acadian Perique. I enjoy a number of latakia-laden english blends as well. My point is, i do appreciate proper tobacco connoiseur's blends.

What i don't like is cigarettes. I used to smoke those, then i discovered the wonders and joys of pipe smoking, and i've not looked back since.

Some may think less of me, but i'm also not a big fan of alcohol. I just can't seem to enjoy it. It makes me feel ill and it all tastes of paint thinner to me. The only way i can appreciate the stuff is in eggnog or mulled wine or such.

Now, when i first sampled this blend, and recoiled in horror.

I'm going by memory here, as there's no force in the universe that could make me smoke more than the couple of bowls i had of this stuff, but i do recall the flavour quite vividly. It tasted exactly like someone took a cigarette and sprinkled it with alcohol. Presumably whisky.

A high quality cigarette, i'll grant you, but a cigarette nonetheless. That's absolutely not what i want to see (or indeed, taste) from my pipe blends.

If that does somehow sound appealing to you, i will say that i remember it burning quite well and very cleanly indeed. It did get rather harsh, but that's hardly a suprise considering the flavour. I don't remember it biting, however.

So yeah, bottom line, i despise this blend. Granted, i'm probably the last person who should have tried it, but hey, there's value in having reviews from different perspectives, no?

I feel a bit guilty about doing this to a Peterson blend, but well, no point in a review if it's not my honest opinion. Besides, i'll make up for it when i get around to reviewing the vastly superior Irish Flake and University Flake.

This was the very first tobacco I ever bought. Not knowing anything and the store owner not being any help I chose this. tasted great but it had lots of bite and seamed very spicy on the tongue. I tossed it and bought cherry cavendish.

Loving Irish Whiskey's as I do-Tullamore Dew in a French-pressed coffee is fantastic btw, I thought I'd at least like this aro. It's my third aro from Peterson, and CC was a 3 , SB a 2, but if I could give IW a zero, that's what it would get. I tried drying it out, even heeding the advice here of leaving the tin open x 2 days.

Nothing helps this horribly harsh nasty tasting stuff. I can't tell if its strong or the harshness of it makes me think its strong. Smells lightly of Peterson casings, but no taste, other than crap.

Doesn't turn me off of Peterson's, as UF is a top 5 of mine. I'm going to try Irish Flake to see if its an Irish thing...

I tried this years ago and the current iteration is quite different. Before, it actually had a topping of real whiskey where one could detect the alcohol in an otherwise unremarkable and somewhat bland tobacco. This tobacco now smells like mild dried mango from the tin with no trace of alcoholic bouquet. Is there even genuine whiskey in this? The flavor is still rather bland but fairly harsh which one readily senses in the back of the throat presuming from some hefty air-cured leaf. The older version had some dark-fired leaf blended in but I didn't detect any smokiness this time around. That "dried mango" comes through at a more attenuated level in aroma and even lessor in taste. I wish there was truth in advertising especially with tobacco companies. They can market a blend, change it at will, say it's "this" or "that" but may not have any "this" or "that" in it at all. Is there a niche for high nicotine blend with sweet dried mango scent? I don't know what's going on here.

Part of the description says "Virginia Based". But then it also says Burley from Africa,India, Italy and Dark fired from Kentucky. Dark fired is not Virginia, it's Dark Fired leaf that is not Virginia tobacco. Dark fired is technically not Burley either but more like Burley than not. So Pipestud, there is no Virginia in this blend. 🙂 It's all brown Burley, and like another reviewer noted," it has a cigarette taste". The taste is sharp and the whisky lightly soothes and trys to mellow the mixture into a smokable concoction. The nicotine is way over the top. I know what this is. It's Five Brothers with Jameson Irish Whisky sprayed on it. I'll give it another try in a week and see how it goes. Right now I can honestly say that it's just not to my liking.

IW is not what I thought it would be when I ordered the tin. I was excited to try it, popped the seal and loaded a bowl in a cob to test. Nothing.

It burned ok and needed a bit of drying which I attempted several different ways. One method was to let the tin dry open for a few minutes (up to an hour). A second attempt occurred by placing a bowl full on a piece of paper to allow it to room dry for about 30 minutes. Finally I put a small amount in the microwave and tried that in a bowl as well.

Lights were fine after drying and I may have tasted a mild coffee to chocolate flavor but absolutely no whiskey flavor. IW burned hot when thoroughly dried (a la microwave).

In an attempt to raise the aroma I mixed with some of the CB - White (an opened pouch remained in my humidor) to give a bit better aroma, but that didn't help it either. No bad aroma - its just missing as far as I can tell. Overall IW is unremarkable. Save your money for a Jamesons instead of buying the IW
