This blend is decent, but boring. It burns very well, down to grey ash. The bite is present, but minimal. The aroma is very faint, but not unpleasant. I've tasted a few whiskeys, and this does not taste like whiskey. There's almost no nicotine hit to this. I guess it's "OK", but I won't be buying it again.

A few years ago i bought my first tin of Irish Oak ( with the old label ) and did not think much of that blend to be honest.

It is only recently that i discovered that it was actually Irish Whiskey i was smoking and Petersons had mixed up the tin lids.

I would never buy an Alcohol flavoured blend, i do not drink and do not know what Whiskey is supposed to taste like, I will therefore rate this tobacco for how it smoked.

I did find the topping to cause nausea, it had an annoying lingering taste that i really did not enjoy at all. As expected with Petersons, leaf quality and presentation was impeccable.

This blend was not something i enjoyed but i am sure pipesmokers who can appreciate the taste of Whiskey could enjoy it.

YMMV

A good but not noteworthy blend. I enjoy this smoke, a little dry but well balanced medium tobacco. The whiskey is subtle but can be found early in the bowl, seems to fade quickly. It’s a good choice but there are so many better choices in English blends. I got bored on the second bowl, right after the first… but then picked it up a few days later and it was good again.

Appearance: the 50 gram can of the 2011 release (judging by the excise tax) already had a label that said "Made in Denmark". That is, the recipe had already been simplified. But I wanted to see what was an impact. The tobacco is an almost mono-color mixture of stained oak ribbons, in which, if you wanted to, you could see a slightly darker Kentucky. Over the years, the tobacco has become the tiniest bit dry, but the overall consistency has not been affected. Flavor: the typical aroma of a Virginia-Burley blend, with hay and earth notes coming through immediately. However, the nutty, woody, slightly dusty Burley note is not going to give up, being more persistent in the air, while the Virginia weakens rather quickly. A faint note of something smoky from the oak barrel is present - either a drop of whiskey or a moonshine mixed with a bit of Kentucky smoke. It's definitely not Jameson, it's not Tullamore Dew, and it's certainly not my favorite Connemara. If you sniff very long, a ghostly note of vanilla comes through. That's it. Taste: undoubtedly, the woody note and roasted chestnuts are in the lead. However, with respect to the taste of this tobacco, the word of "leading" is wrong. The very taste of the tobacco is rather inexpressive, although over the years it has become more solid and difficult to separate it into elements other than the base note. Nevertheless, there is some sweetness, a slight smokiness from the kentucky, along with a subtle note of bitter chocolate and a very light note of white pepper. As you smoke, the sweetness almost leaves the bowl, but if even you smoke extremely slowly, it clearly lacks sweetness. In addition, it is very demanding to the temperature of smoking - a little overheat, and there is only burley, although the tobacco itself forgives the smoker a rush. The strength of the tobacco is slightly above average, when smoking from a very large pipe I got a slight nicotine hit. The tobacco smokes slowly, cool and very dry, burning into a light gray dusty ash. The aftertaste is woody, slightly sour, not persistent. The smoke almost repeats the flavor from the tin, but the vanilla note is a little more pronounced. It is just as light and not very lingering. What's the bottom line? To my sorrow, decidedly simplified Danish recipe based on burley, perfectly acceptable as a companion, but lacking in appeal. As for Irish Whiskey, if you really want to get a taste of Irish whiskey, just pour yourself a glass. And this tobacco will be a nice accompaniment to it.

Still a little new to the pipe game so perhaps I will grow to enjoy this blend in the future but as of now it is not a winner with me. Dark ribbon cut that packs nicely and smells wonderful after charing light. Full body smoke thanks to the Burley. I notice that both during and after smoking I feel as though I have smoked a cigarette rather than a pipe which I did not like. Plenty of nicotine from the mixture, enough to make me queasy 3 out of the 5 times I smoked it. I thought maybe it was due to being a novice however I smoke quite a bit of Nightcap and do not feel the same. Overall its just okay. The quality is fine but just not for me.

Quite an awkward one for me.

Out of the tin the aroma is a slight smokiness, nutty, with an aromatic honey and whiskey flavouring.

Cut is ready rubbed.

Packs easy enough and takes the flame easy enough.

Boy is this one strong and heavy, this is not an all day smoke by any means and unless you like this kind of thing all day every day I certainly wouldn't recommend it for an all day mixture.

My own experience with it, try as I might, I just can't get along with it, yes it's well behaved and tastes quite nice, but the strength builds and gives a not very nice taste and feel on the back of the throat.

Room note certainly won't win you any friends, it's a potent one.

I'm not saying this is a terrible blend by any means I just find this is not for me.

I'll finish the tin maybe and it's on to something else.

2 stars for the positives I experienced.

fairly harsh tobacco flavor and that's about all i got out of it. after a full tin in different pipes on different days at different times of those days over a month it presented itself to me as burley at one its weaker moments. others obviously enjoy and that's great. if i'm going to smoke burley that isn't of the "chocolatey" variety then i'll take MacB's ODF or Solani's burley flake any time over this.

Needs attention while smoking. With a slow and controlled puffing it may satisfy you and keep the nicotine kick at the limits. Has a steady and cool burning.

I personally will choose something different with less additional flavoring. This is not for my taste.

For some reason, no-one in Glasgow, Scotland seems to want to sell my style of pipe tobacco - I can't get any DNRs anywhere now my local specialist shop's shut down, so have been limited to Peterson's University Flake as the nearest I can get so far. The place I buy it from insists on stocking all these cheap and nasty pouches of god-knows-what and refuses to get ANY Dunhill tobaccos in, "in case it doesn't sell". It truly is a sad time for a city that was practically built on tobacco trading. ANYWAY... I decided to try PIW as an alt to PUF. I'm definitely a Va/Per man, which is annoying as there are so many good ones out there and I'm limited to a pathetic selection. At first, I was really impressed by the tin aroma of PIW. It smelled rich and fermented and lovely. I later realised this was a con. First light tastes adulterated and artifical, then it settles down and in the middle of the bowl, for about 15% of the smoke, there's a rich, dark succulence I really like. But the truth is, this isn't a clean or honest smoke. It burns too quick, is subject to goo in the btm of the bowl, and no matter how slowly or carefully its smoked, its a bit nippy and hot. It feels like a botched attempt at a great idea. Anyone out there know any real tobaccos in this style?
