Lane Limited RLP-6

(3.07)
Blended with just the right proportion of golden Virginia and burley, the basic blend of toasted cavendish tobaccos takes on a zesty dimension. This mixture gets better as you smoke it all day long.

To get the most from this blend fill a medium to large bowl pipe. Smoke slowly. And since it is non-cloying, this mixture truly gets better as you smoke it all day long.

To date, this has to be one of my favorite aromatics. The cut is rough, allowing a cooler, slower burn, providing a taste of real tobacco. The flavoring is such that it is not too wet or dominating. The room note is extremely pleasant, receiving only the finest compliments from my wife. The flavoring matches the room note when smoked - a caramel, toffee, dessert like Starbuck's experience.

Other reviewers have compared this to a premium Captain Black. Unless my local tobacconist has accidentally swapped labels between RLP6 and LL7, I do not think RLP6 compares to Captain Black. I would call LL7 a premium version of Captain Black. I could be mistaken, as it's been 15+ years since I've smoked that amateur stuff; however, the aroma & taste of the early days plus the years a young child covets the aroma of his father's tobacco pouch sort of stays with you for life. Read my review on LL7 if you wish.

This is readily available at my local pipe shop, and according to the tobacconist, he sells more of this than any other 5 blends put together. The aroma of it being smoked by someone else is what caught my attention to inquire about it.

This has the zestiness of a good lighter VA and the burley adds a buttery aftertaste that is very palpable. A simple smoke with a good flavor and aroma that packs easy, burns clean, dry and to a fine grey ash all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

4 out of 4.

When I first tried this tobacco, I thought it had some potential to make it into my regular rotation. It seemed to taste good and smoke well. However, the last couple of bowls I've smoked have been horrible, and I couldn't even finish these last couple of bowls because of the heat and bad taste. When I lit up the tobacco, I experienced nothing but a harsh bitterness that tasted like a bar of soap. The tobacco also smoked very, very hot. I don't think any tobacco I've smoked has ever heated up a pipe like this stuff did. The tobacco's taste did seem to mellow out a little after a few minutes, but it was still too harsh/soapy- tasting. I don't know why this baccy went from yummy to crummy, but I'm not going to smoke any more of this stuff to find out.

So here am I hopelessly baffled by one such acronymania predicament regarding this week’s aromatic sampling. My theory is that the blender must have been gulping down a bowl of Campbell’s Alphabet soup when this one was formally anointed because I cannot wrap my mind around the significance of the naming convention chosen. A random spoonful of unrelated characters by all practical appearances. You know on second thought, it kind of reminds me of one of those flashy fitness programs that sounds really sexy on the tongue but ultimately is designed to just take your money. Let’s hope not! If anyone has an inkling, please do enlighten me. Nonetheless here we go or HWG rather …

Make no mistake Lane Limited’s RLP-6 is not a P90X, nevertheless the blending protocol is designed to yoke up your pipe smoking gains all the same. Getting past the stigmatism of unintelligible letters and numbers won’t prove to be too distracting when this mild strength/mild intensity aromatic concoction is spotted inside your bowl. Featuring golden Virginia, leafy Burley, toasted Cavendish, and Black Cavendish insanely jacked by a muscled cocktail of honey, molasses, succulent cream, tasty nougat, sweet sugary vanilla, and no anabolic steroids.

A rough and ready course of chiseled ribbon tendrils and beefy chunks flex a handsome display of deep ebon, bright tarnished gold and sheer browned density in a brawny presentation. The pouch air tenders as a quietly sweet enigma in direct contradiction to the mixture’s overt toothy mug. Peaceful notes of dark rustic honey, chocolate mystery (?) and graceful vanilla cream swirl over a basic Play Dough-type essence as they hide some passive tang that seems to be churning on the bottom of the stack.

The tobaccos are somewhat saturated in composition which necessitates extended drying to achieve RLP-6’s optimal slow burning and cool tempered mechanical attributes. PG is a factor on this one from my assessment as the flavorings proved to be lightly applied, revealing docile remarking with the smoking. Just be advised.

For the most part, a thin creaminess and dark cultured honey lead the prominent base flavor which distinguishes overall as a gentle sugary confection. In ready attendance the top accenting contributed by the nougat is suggestive of a diluted hot cocoa feel not unlike the center of a Three Musketeers bar. The middle band characterization is occupied by a dense, spicy, and dark molasses flavoring. On occasion, these three seem to wrestle for first position of influence. Finally, a hint of baked vanilla comes and goes in the distant rear being quite easily missed. Overall, the combination of all these elements renders RLP-6’s foremost taste profile with a very light yet charming impression.

Given that the additive seasonings preside over most of the experience, one finds that the Virginia, remote as it is, does bring some sweet bread affluence, raisins, a bit of citrusy grass, and a dash of soft tang. Secondly the Burley shines through with a tasty brown sugared nuttiness favoring the effect of the Brazilian variety. An intriguing and decidedly consistent finishing note takes form as the Cavendish provides a notation of earthen charry zest, very smokey in constitution. Not half bad.

A delicately thin, sweet fragrance of tendered honey and sugary warmth enfolding some native folksy spice permeates the immediate surroundings making RLP-6’s room presence suggestively pleasant and tolerable to the most sensitive types. This attractive aroma does tends to vanish rather quickly even at that.

The texture of the smoke is standardly smooth, offering no bite and discomfort whatsoever. Additionally, this mix personates its standard character equally well in either cob or briar. The Bottom-line, RLP-6 bestows a wholesome gentility and enjoyably peaceful demeanor that even a hard-core lunker like Ogre could find merit in.

Admittingly I am subjectively half-baked with respect to Lane Limited products as they tend to be a little too mild for my palate but this one is generally nice in all honesty. So, grab those gains and lift a bowl of this engaging blend to maximize progressive overload of your piping smoking indulgence, I do recommend it. 3.0 Pipes

Not much to add than what's already said in other reviews. Its been a very long time since I smoked any Capt. Black blends so I won't venture into comparisons.

Wonderful pouch note. A mix of chocolate, vanilla, and nougat. Moisture level about right. Not sticky or wet.

Wonderful room note. By-stander approved. The flavors of the nougat, chocolate, honey, molasses all meld together well. Not too sweet. The tobacco taste is there, just not well pronounced. The flavor is pretty consistent throughout the smoke. My only complaint is that it smokes just slightly on the fast side and can get warm, but it's not something to really worry about or that is hard to avoid.

I can see why this is such a popular blend. It is one of the better aromatics that I've tried and I will keep some of this delightful tobacco on hand. Very easily an everyday/all day smoke. The new pipe smoker can hardly go wrong with this blend.

A smooth smoke with no bite. Very nice room and pouch note. The Virginia didn't seem to be as tangy as in other blends, one of the things that separate RPL-6 from other aromatics. It did get a little bitter toward the bottom of the bowl, but not to the point of being unpleasant. Lit well and stayed lit... This would make a good all day smoke.

UPDATE - I mixed in some Carolina Flake in and came up with a wonderful blend. Taste is great!

This is my favorite aromatic from Lane Limited. It is a mild all day type of smoke. It has no bite and has a savory flavor. I am not too good at describing this or that flavor coming through, I just know this tastes great. I just received another pound today in the mail and am presently enjoying my first pipeful after having jarred and stored it away except for one jar to smoke. It lights very easily and smokes down to a fine gray ash. I not let myself run out again. I did not realize how much I had missed this blend until my order arrived this morning.

Lane-RLP-6, Chartwell at Tinderbox. It's like Captain Black White Label with a rougher cut. Maybe it's not the same tobacco but it sure tastes like it. As I mentioned, it's rough cut and has dark and bright leaf. Packs easy, lights easy. I can sense that molases, chocolate, and Licorice were used to flavour this blend. Has a heavy aromatic scent that lingers and most will like. Mid-way down the bowl the molases comes out and is deep with the tobacco almost producing a taste and smell of lose leaf chewing tobacco. A good aromatic and tastey smoke.

This is one of the few blends I can get easily where I live...

It is a typical Lane Cavendish confection, and a classic American cased aromatic. This is indeed similar to Captain Black, but it has better burning characteristics. There is less moisture, so it is much drier in the pipe. Folks around will love the smell. Is it chocolate? Vanilla? Who knows for sure? It doesn't have much tobacco taste, and that is why it isn't one of my favorites. It could be a nice inexpensive all day blend for the fancier of sweet aromatics. It will make your handkerchief drawer smell great...
