I do not want to say I cut my teeth on this tobacco, as I was introduced to about ten years into my pipe smoking. I was in the Army at the time in Europe when the Post Exchange received their first shipment around 1974.
This is an excellent tobacco for the pipe smoker as well as the beginner as it does present itself as a very cool, and non-biting of the tongue. IMO this tobacco really started the tobacco world of aromatics come alive. I know while in Europe they could not keep this on the shelves as every pipe smoker was buying it up, and at the same time enticing a new audience in becoming pipe smokers.
I buy a pouch every now and then just to reminiscence my past

Yes i am new to pipe smoking. I've been smoking for a year an a half but mostly Cigars. I tried Captain Black White after having a somewhat pleasurably experience with Captain Black Royal Blue. As of right now i really can't affoard any better and am quite content with its extremely mild flavor. There is really not much else to say that hasn't been said, I smoke this when i'm out with my friends and can't afford a good cigar, but i only buy cigars because i do not know much about pipe tobacco. Overall as everyone has stated if you are looking for an occasional smoke with a pleasant or are just beginning (like myself) aroma CBW is probably the way to go. I know eventually my tastes will mature, but for right now Captain Black is keeping me into Pipe Smoking; I couldn't ask for much more.

I like this blend alot for many reasons. As many smokers, it was my first smoke, but also along with my first trip alone on the other side of the continent, so it's aroma always brings back wonderful memories. The smell never seems to displease anyone around me and, most importantly, never dipleases me either. The fact that it is available almost everywhere is certainly a huge asset...if you are, like me, an incorrigible procrastinator!
Not the best, but definatly a very good, affordable and accessible tobacco.

Remember the old Billy Martin TV commercials for Captain Black? I always remember him saying, "Never a bite in the bowl." Ahhh, the nostalgia of Captain Black. Who indeed hasn?t at least tried this venerable blend? I too cut my teeth (so to speak) on this brand and I still enjoy it today. I think Hawkeyeted hit the nail on the head when he described the taste and smell as toasted marshmallow. I also think it has a hint of a fruit aroma. Sure it isn?t the most complex tobacco around, but if you want a nice and mild, readily available and reasonably priced aromatic blend then you could do far worse than this. This is a good smoke for when you are puttering around.

Like others have mentioned , Captian Black is probably one Of Americas most popular drug store pipe mixtures. I've smoked CBW on occasions when I ran out of my custom blend and couldnt get to the pipe shop. I found it to have a pleasent sweet taste and a very pleasing aroma without a bite. I've even had non smokers approach me in Bars and Resturants to tell me how good my pipe smoke smelled. In my opinion CBW would be the ideal blend to introduce a new comer to pipe smoking.

I never realised just how accustomed to "gourmet" tobacco I had become until I recently bought a 12 oz. tin of this. For years, I had avoided OTC tobacco and, after smoking this, I can see why some people might like it. It's smooth, light in flavour, and not overly complicated (which can be a good thing and a bad thing). The flavour and aroma (courtesy of the casing more than the tobacco itself) was pleasant enough, and I didn't notice the goop that I tend to get with more upscale aromatics. Despite these accolades, the tobacco is not complex enough to spark much interest. It serves quite well as a staple in one's tobacco rotation, but I wouldn't want to limit myself to smoking this blend. As a matter of fact, if I were to smoke more than one or two bowls of this at once, I would need a quality Latakia blend just to cleanse my palate.
Beginners will probably love it due to the fact that there is no tongue bite and to its room note.

They say the Captain Black we get here in Europe is not a faithful representation of the American original and I hope for all you guys stateside that's true! I smoked my sample in a corncob pipe to get that authentic all-American experience. It all started well, lit easily and tasted smooth and colourful. Enjoyed the first bowl and decided to go for another soon after - possibly a mistake, by the end of the second bowl I found the sweetness of the tobacco had become sickly in taste and I struggled to get through the remainder of my pipe. Got up to walk to the local village Inn and it was all I could do to avoid throwing up from the candy-sweet mixture. I prefer Latakia and English blends and perhaps these aromatic and drug-store varieties are not for me. Feel I should search out a pack of US imported 'Captain' before I finally lay my demons to rest but at $18 for a 50g pouch over here, I'm not sure it's really worth it.
