Drugstore or not this blend has launched many pipe smoking carers. This was also my first daily blend when I started.A pleasent fragrance emits among clouds of smoke and is really my wifes favorite blend for me to smoke.

A mixture of lite tan and black cavendish, with what I would call a vanilla topping. To me this is probally one of the most consitant blends in taste that I have smoked.Easy to light and to stay lit.For me the biggest drawback, but this is for all aromatics is it can tend to burn hot if not nurtured.

This is one of the very first blends I smoked that did not come from a jar- a dubious distinction, particularly since I bought it in a foil pouch. I loved the aroma lit and unlit, but that is about it. Ubiquitous, but so is sin.

LATER COMMENTS

I did a test on how much I like the particular blend. I took the pouch together with all my other open pouches and carried it in my handbag for some 10 days. I DID NOT REACH FOR IT NOT EVEN ONCE!!!

In the meantime I managed to locate some tins of the equally expensive W.O. LARSEN "Ultimate Luxury" Blends (Signature, 1864, Old Fashioned). Signature is quite comparable in terms of Aroma but 10 times higher quality.

So I started trying to use up the CB White pouch by diluting it in less aromatic blends. The "Wood Taste" would pop up and consistently destroy all of them - even when the blend was so much diluted that I could hardly smell it. Today I just threw the pouch away.

The tell me that the US version is very different and far superior to the European one. Oh, well, tough luck. Until I come accross the US version, I will not bother with this horror again. So, downgrade it to NOT RECOMMENDED...

ORIGINAL

I really like the pouch smell. It is quite strong too; an open pouch will easily dominate the surroundings.

The Room note is OK - I do not get as enthusiastic comments as other reviewers mention, but nevertheless it is OK. As some other reviewers point out, it also carries some notes of burning wood - both in the taste and room note departments.

This is not a popular blend around here - so it is not easy to get. I was very eager to try this out; I kept bugging my tobacconist. But overall, now that I have tried it, I am somewhat disappointed. I still nurture some hopes about Captain Black Royal - which is even harder to get - but I will not be bugging my tobacconist much. I am just too afraid that it will be a disappointment too.

The blend is sufficiently strong for me to tolerate and smoke as a "standalone". I still dislike the intense "wood-like" flavor. Therefore, I would tend to mix it up with some less aromatic blends.

Just like other Captain Black Blends, it lights easily and burns evenly, without overheating or scorching my tongue. Simulatneously, it is very expensive in my area, not worth the money.

I can't really say anything new about this classic among classics, of course pipe snobs will always dismiss it as a soft "drugstore brand", whatever... their loss. I mean... for what its meant to be, captain black always delivers and I'ts regarded by many as the quintaessential pipe tobacco, to begin with the room note is the stuff of legends, I also think it's a good tobacco for newbies as well as the more seasoned smokers, Of course it's mild and sweet and heavily cased with vanilla, so if you're up for that kind of thing, well, then just go on, an indulge in it. Of course you can't just live on this stuff forever (as some ppl do), I myself have kind of outgrown it, and moved on to other tobaccos either english blends or different kinds of aromatics (I'm mostly an aromatic smoker, I admit without any guilt) but I stilll love it, (I always keep a CP royal). If you're into english latakia blends you're probably gonna hate it, but if you like sweet mild tobaccos, this might be heaven. Sometimes I do agree that it's a bit too sweet and overwhelming, and it leaves a a funny aftertaste, but as I said before, it's a tobacco to keep around, but not to smoke every day. Still the best captain black is the royal (blue)

Captain Black White was my first Lane limited product many years ago. I was attracted to it because of the room note. I found this to be my everyday tobacco for many years, and I still smoke it quite a bit. CBW has a very pleasant, creamy vanilla flavor that is not overpowering. It burns well and stays lit. I would highly recommend Captain Black White to any pipe smoker, beginner and veteran alike.

06162006 After being introduced to non aromatic blends, particularly some from Peterson and McClellan, I no longer enjoy Captain Black. The casing just spoils it for me.

An old standby, and known by nearly all pipesters. This tobacco is a classic drugstore blend, thus very easy to aquire. I picked up a 12oz can at CVS for approx $21.00 (slightly expensive.)

It is quite mild tobacco flavor, tounge bite is virtually non-existant. You can puff away on it without worry of turning your tounge into a substance similar to bacon.

It is very strongly cased with a Cream-ish/vanilla flavoring. For some people it may be overwelmingly so. If you like sweets and such, this is a great blend. It is also not very complex, all you will taste is "That" Cream/vanilla flavor. I personally like it alot, and it will always be on my pipe shelf.

The room note is what attracts many people to this blend, it is a quite lovely creamy vanilla scent. Ladys love the scent of it, definitely the "old spice" of Pipe tobaccos. The room note tends to linger for quite a while as well. To many people it is reminecent of their grandparents.

The taste is not bad, but not particularly strong either...still being smacked in the face with the creamy vanilla taste.

I would reccomend this to beginning smokers, or any that like sugary sweet tobaccos. In my opinion every pipester should give this blend a try once in his life. you might like it.

Hey it's not a 4 star tobacco but for a drugstore blend, it's a good old fashion cavendish. How can ya disagree? Not an everyday smoke but when I feel like a classic cavendish, i reach for Capt Black.

I smoked this blend for years when I was a younger pipester. I had one pipe, and I smoked several bowls of this every day for years.

It's a good smelling tobacco, and the taste isn't bad. It is readily available although it is pretty expensive for a drugstore blend. Nowadays I go for something like PA or Half & Half if I'm buying a drugstore tobacco, but my tastes have changed.

I would give this a higher rating, except I seem to have developed a physiological reaction to this tobacco. I'm not sure what chemical additives are in it, but it has a bad effect on me now. When I smoke this I get an itchy feeling like I have a hairball stuck in the back of my throat. If I stop smoking this it goes away, if I start again it comes back. No other pipe tobacco that I have tried seems to do this to me, so I can only assume it is from excessive PG content or some other additive. I intend to try Lane 1-Q or RLP-6 as an alternative. I have no problems with Lane LL-7.

Bottom Line: smells good, tasty, overpriced, too much additives.

I was given what I was told was Captain Black White (it came in a ziplock bag as a bonus when I bought a humidor on E-Bay). However, after reading the reviews here, I questioned if it was CBW. My nose could detect no vanilla whatsoever, but instead a smell not unlike spice cake (my favorite). Also, the flavor had a taste of a spicy mixture as well. After finishing the bonus bag, I bought a tin from a tobacco shop and it had the same spicy taste and aroma. So, I guess where others smell vanilla, I smell spice. (Cooking is one of my hobbies, so I know I can smell the difference.) I find that CBW burns cool without any gurgle and leaves a fine white ash at the bottom of the bowl. One light and a few well-timed tampers is all I need for a pipeful. It's available almost anywhere, so if I should run short of tobacco on my travels, I can usually find it. And that's about the only time I would probably buy it, but then with no remorse. It's not a bad smoke by any means, although the flavor is a johnny-one-note. I just prefer a lot more body in the smoke itself.

This stuff was all right. One dimensional with not a whole lot to experience. On the other hand this stuff is really good if your smoking it for what its worth. Never bites and its fairly sweet. Its a blend that you just put it in and smoke. no concentration required so its great if your driving or mowing the lawn or doing something while your smoking. It may end up being a regular for me but only for those times when I want to smoke and don't want to think about it at all.
