A very enjoyable tobacco that doesn't bite if smoked properly. It packs well, burns evenly and is an adequate smoke if drug store blends are all that's available to you. Not as high in quality as it's counterpart, RLP-6, it is a suitable substitute if the higher quality version is unavailable.

The room note is pleasant and you will undoubtedly receive many compliments on the aroma. A very flavorful aromatic blend.

It does often become harsh at about 2/3 down. I attribute this to a high humectant content and being made with less than high quality leaf.

When RLP-6 is unavailable, this will provide an adequate substitute, but only tempoarily.

This one has more black cavendish, and the pouch aroma is stronger.

Like the Royal version, everybody LOVES the room note, but the fact that it is so over cased that it's impossible to keep the pipe dry, and almost impossible to finish off a pipe ful 'till the end, prevents me from wanting to smoke it further.

But, if you want to make non smokers friend, you will win them with this one!

I am new to pipe smoking and have tried many high end aromatics so I had to try this stand by smoke. I have to say, for this being a drug store tobac, it's not bad...... but it's not good either. The pouches aroma disappears in just a few day and the strong vanilla flavor disappears too. The first three day or so of the smoke was great but the longer it was open it dropped in quality. In addition, the heel of the bowl always seem to leave a sticky goo in my pipe that didn't smell or taste good (smoking that is). But not bad for a "cheap" tobacco. I will stick to W.Ø. Larsen's Signature Blend though.

What can I add that has not already been said? This is a standby tobacco, one that almost everyone had tried. Legendary for its room note, I have yet to find anyone that doesn't like it. However, I notice that the pouch aroma changes the longer its been open. It seems to lose some of the heavier vanilla/ chocolate character.

Captain Black White, is a wonderful heavy Vanilla cavendish tobacco. The taste does not change much all the way down the bowl. No tongue bite here, and burns fairly dry. If you are not much into aromatic type tobaccos, stay clear of this blend, but if you are like me, give the old Captain a try.

Shiver me timbers........it's Cap'n Black !

This one has a legion of followers, then again, so does Britney Spears (homey don't play that, either).

This one smells great and that's where the positives end. As a fully recovered CB Gold addict, White never appealed to me. The base tobaccos of a couple other entries in the CB series seem to be better vehicles for delivering the Chemo-Vanilla Goop.

As CB White is no longer inexpensive in pouch form, I can find no reason to recommend it, other than room note. As Pipestud suggested, CB is a babe magnet (I could tell you stories but you probably wouldn't believe them). There are MUCH better tasting aromatics out there.

So, no thanks, matey. Aaargh.

This has been my everyday tobacco for the past several years. Sure, it's a "drug store brand"' but that only means it's very accessible. Lane produces some fine tobaccos, and this is one of them. Black Cavendish blended with a little Burley leaves you with a most satisfying smoke. I've NEVER experienced tongue-bite with this blend. I still find myself returning to the Captain every fifth or sixth bowl. At $5.25/pouch, how could you not? Now that's consistency!

This is my standby tobacco - I smoke it on weekdays from morning until the end of the work day, generally going through 3-4 small bowls a day and about 1-1.5 oz. a week. I reguarly get compliments on the room note and even got a compliment from a known "anti-tobacco" co-worker in the past. I generally smoke this out of a short stem pipe (4" from end of stem to bowl) and have yet to have a problem with bite. It will definitely "foul" your pipe with its essence so if you plan to smoke more than a bowl or two then I would consider dedicating a pipe to this blend. It does tend to be a bit gummy and leave a heavy residue behind, so if you're not used to regular pipe cleaning then you'll get a chance to hone your skills. Since I live in the bright sunny south, the thick, sweet aromatic smoke from this blend gets to be a bit much for me on those 95 degree days with 80% humidity so I will mix it (~60/40) with another readily available brand (Sugar Barrel) and let them marry for a couple of weeks in a sealed jar. This mixture ends up being just right for me during the summer months. In my experience it mixes well with just about any VA blend, but had a pretty disgusting experience with a mix of this and Penzance (YUCK!). I have notice that there seems to be a slight difference in aroma and taste between the pouches and the 12 oz. tin but this may just be due to differences in age or storage conditions (I get the pouches from a local Wal-Mart while the tin comes from an open air tobacco outlet where it is regularly exposed to sunlight). I will say that I have never reached for this blend on a weekend, but after 5 days of regular smoking I need a couple of days with something else. I don't think that I'll ever be caught without a bit of this blend on hand and its high availability helps to ensure that.

The first pipe tobacco I ever smoked, Captain Black White Label. I still revisit it occasionally, and I still truly enjoy it. I have other aromatics now that I like better, but you cannot go wrong with The Captain. A tried and true blend that has stood the test of time, if you have not already tried this, I highly recommend it. I can still remember going to a Church festival with my Grandparents back in the late Eighties. I was 18 and had just started smoking a pipe. EVERYWHERE I went at that festival, I recieved compliments on The Captain's Aroma. I smoked it faithfully for more than a half a dozen years before moving to English Blends, VaPers, and Higher End Aromatics. But I pick up a pouch about once a year, and revisit many fond memories. My only complaint is the current COST for a pouch. When I started smoking The Captain back in 1989, it was $1.44 a pouch. NOW, it is $5.15 a pouch a the local Drugstore! My Premium Aromatics are in many cases, cheaper than this! But still, I buy it...you just can't keep from visiting tried and true old friends!

I've been smoking for a couple of years, but until now, I'd not tried Captain Black. The only other "drugstore" brand I'd smoked was Prince Albert, which I actually liked for being a nice, no nonsense smoke. Mostly, though, I enjoy Virginias, latakias, and perique blends, depending on mood and season.

Today, though, I got curious and picked up a pouch of Captain Black at the store. I have to say: so far, I'm enjoying it.

Yup, it's really mild and doesn't have a ton of taste. Yeah, it's not exotic or terribly exciting. But it smells great, tastes nice, and it sure as heck doesn't bite.

What you're getting here certainly isn't a complex tobacco. What you're getting is an enjoyable, inexpensive smoke that you might find yourself coming back to more than you think when you just can't come up with something to smoke instead.
