Dunhill My Mixture BB1938 Baby's Bottom

(3.19)
A re-release of the blend previously known as Baby's Bottom, BB1938 is an extremely smooth blend of Cyprian latakia and sweet golden & red Virginias. A wonderful blend for Virginia lovers who are looking for a little extra flavor.
Notes: Smoking Pipes reissue tin description: A blend of Virginias and latakia made famous generations ago for its smooth smoking qualities, Baby's Bottom was at the top of the list for mixtures we wanted to see re-introduced. Now, thanks to the folks at British American Tobacco and General Cigar, it has returned. Old Dunhill store description: A smooth medium strength mixture which consists mainly of red Virginia, but also has bronze and lemon Virginia, some flake and a good helping of latakia (As smooth as a baby's bottom).

When I went to snatch the Durbar tin produced in 2014 (which costed 12,75€ back then compared to 13,60€ now...) from a small tobacconist around my corner, I had some spare money for another tin. It was either stocking up on Early Morning, but the tins were from 2017 or a tin BB1938 from 2015...no doubt I grabbed the BB1938!

Virginia and Latakia.. no Oriental.. may sound a bit boring for some - for me it did too - and this is far from being complex.... but it's just really tasty! BB1938 reminds me a lot of a tad stronger Early Morning Pipe without the Turkish leaf. They're like brothers in some way: BB1938 being the older and bolder, stronger big brother that's not as sophisticated, who uses his muscles as weapons; EMP being the sophisticated, more complex, yet rather powerless younger brother. BB1938 is the football-team guy; EMP is the smart as hell nerd with glasses. They both share a toasty/toasted aroma in the tobacco, which I LOVE!

Whilst EMP is ethereal, BB1938 is rather salty. The Virginias form a wonderful base for the moderately added Latakia to shine. Smoky, salty, leathery, with sweet and refreshing citrus & fruit undertones from the Virginias. A bit creamy as well. Monochromatic, but surely not boring! A pleasing and calming, straight-forward smoke for those moments you want a simple, yet tasteful and rich smoke! Again 3,5 stars for me, but I'll give it 4 as this is personal preference.

IF one of the two should be considered "smooth as a baby bottom" it would be EMP for me , surely BB1938 has some pleasant rougher aroma (in a good sense) and a little boldness to it - don't get that wrong, it's a "medium smoke", yet spicy and hearty!

OK, so this is a good combination of Virginia tobacco and latakia, but leaning more onto the virginia side of the argument than that of the latakia's. I like it as it is complex enough to be wanting to be sipped slowly, but if you loose track of it, you can still rely on the latakia leaf to get you back into the business. And the virginia leaf they use is quite good, actually. "Citrusy" and "earthy" are words that come to mind. I cannot compare notes with the old mixture as I have never tried it before, but this new release seems to be quite good in its own right.

Subtle and satisfying....that pretty much sums this blend up, but I will go on. I find this blend quite similar to Select Mixture from Smokers Haven, it is a light English, but not light in flavor, like EMP, more like you just turned the volume down on a full English blend. I have found Babys Bottom to be a perfect blend for the first pipe of the day, as it is light on the palate, but it still gives me the flavor and more importantly, the complexity I enjoy in my regular blends such as Margate and Black House. Highly Recommended!

LatVa blends are one of my favorites and although this isn't the best of them it is very good and I highly recommend it. The mix is simple, but it does produce some complexity. The contrast between the smoky, woody Latakia and the fruity, sweet Virginias is very appealing. That contrast is what draws me to these blends. I just love it. This smokes quickly, but remains cool. Very pleasant and satisfying.

Medium in body and flavor. Burns very well.

Just opened a tin of the new stuff with ReedSteve It is just great. Fine but sloppy cut, wonderful in the tin. Light & smooth as its namesake. The Golden Age is NOW. EDIT 11/2018: Time in the tin has enhanced this to the smoothest smoke I own. It has also made the spicy sweetness of the Va even better, and rounded out the Lat to a small wood fire aroma. Pleasant as can be.

This tobacco snuck up on me completely. At the top of the bowl, it was "nice, I could smoke more of this". Gradually, while doing other things, I puffed my way down to mid-bowl, thinking, "Dunhill has a recognisable consistency in its tobaccos and flavours - this is good stuff.". The Virginia in this blend reminds me of the one in Elizabethan mixture. Then, at just past mid bowl, my attention was entirely diverted from whatever I was doing, and shifted to the now beautifully melded tastes and perfect consistency and density of the smoke. I am savouring the last 1/3 of the bowl as I write this, trying not to over puff, and just tasting it get better and better as the bowl nears its sadly inevitable end. In retrospect, Elizabethan mixture had the same effect of grabbing my attention mid bowl, but not quite as forcefully as BB 1938.

This was my first bowl ever of this tobacco, but certainly not my last!

This review was taken from a sealed tin of Parker-Hardcastle's Baby's Bottom.

Starts off with the qualities and taste of dark chocolate, slightly bitter but mostly sweet. There's a slight hint of tartness that adds depth to the chocolate note without overwhelming it.

Near the mid way point, it becomes deeper and slightly more tart but the sweetness is still clearly evident in the background.

Past the mid way point, wine like qualities become evident (thick, creamy & chewy) as the chocolate note moves to the background.

As you near bottom, the smokiness of the Latakia dominates and the wine like qualities and chocolate traits become background notes.

It finishes deep & tasty without any hint of heat or harshness.

Overall a deep, tasty & smooth mixture with many complex dimensions and layers.

The aroma is deep, spicy, slightly dusty/musty & pungent.

Why did I buy this stuff again? I really don’t know, I guess I just wanted to get a taste of some of their lesser known blends before they’re gone. Now I understand why this is one of their lesser known blends, it really doesn’t have much of any flavor to speak of, zero complexities and the nicotine content is low. I’m sure the Murrays version was decent but this STG version is just bland and I mean that in a bad way. I’ll try to cut it with more Lat with the hopes of I can finish the rest of this tin without boring me to death.

I purchased a tin of BB1938 soon after it was made available in Italy. It is a mixture of Virginia and Latakia, with the latter with a dominant role. It packs and burns well, the cut is the typical ribbon cut by Dunhill, which I like very much. It's recommended for a carefree smoke, not for meditative ones, in my opinion. Anyway, recommended.

First timer for this, although I like Dunhill's London mixture, Royal Yacht and some others and I like 'em.

I was surprised though with this blend. Perhaps it's just the mixture, but found this a completely relaxing smoke.if you're a fast puffer then this may not satisfy. If you smoke it easy and slow and get the taste buds going this brings forth a creamy woody bright flavour. Many have said this is down to the Virginia and I agree. However I wouldn't say it's a light tasting smoke, quite deep in parts like a creamy coffee / chocolate type flavour. It's not a "full on" nicotine strength blend, but a wholesome easy burning blend. It's delightfully rich as you go mid way onwards.

The surprise then for me is that the bright deep earthy twang aroma from the tin is not as fierce as I expected when smoking. Its much more refined and mellow really. I think the Baby's Bottom analogy is stretching the point a bit though.

Nice late afternoon - end of the day smoke. Very enjoyable.
