(3.19)
A re-release of the blend previously known as Baby's Bottom, BB1938 is an extremely smooth blend of Cyprian latakia and sweet golden & red Virginias. A wonderful blend for Virginia lovers who are looking for a little extra flavor.

Now, thanks to the folks at British American Tobacco and General Cigar, it has returned. Old Dunhill store description: A smooth medium strength mixture which consists mainly of red Virginia, but also has bronze and lemon Virginia, some flake and a good helping of latakia (As smooth as a baby's bottom).

Mostly darker brown to black in a short ribbon cut, this has a light latakia tin nose that borders on scentless. Came a bit too moist but was easy to dry out and a cinch to load. My tin was of the new variety and I never had a chance to smoke the original.

Two words best describe my experience with this - smooth and disappointing. It's supposed to be smooth, so that matches the claim. Taste-wise, this was sort of gutless... all baby's butt and no spine. The latakia was prominent but lacked any assertiveness. The Virginia bordered on characterless and didn't really lend any brightness or tang to the proceedings. Sort of a bland base tobacco with latakia, and very monochromatic. It ended with a bit more zing but I found almost zero complexity here, either in meerschaum or briar. I do get the impression that this met its design goals, however, as it was indeed smooth as an infant's behind. And I do think it's cool to bring back old, time honored blends. This is a blend that if I hadn't tried, I'd be chomping at the bit to do so, but I found this one pretty boring. Whether it mirrors the original, I can't say, but I'm guessing that based on its name, it was made to be a smooth smoke and not so much to be a flavor bomb. If that's the case, add at least one star. To me, it's good only if you want a pipe in your mouth and aren't interested in noticing the taste. It'll provide a bit of nicotine to satisfy a moderate craving but if you smoke for flavor, you may be as disappointed as I in this one.

I've been smoking this daily for the past couple of weeks, and I still can't tell whether I really like it or not. The problem for me is that it is as you would expect from the name very smooth and creamy. But there is a fine line between smooth and bland, and I feel that at times this blend crosses into the latter. To compensate I end up packing very tightly and almost always want a second bowl almost immediately, not because it lacks a nicotine hit (it doesn't) but to try and get some sense of having consumed some flavour. If I had to make a comparison it would be to drinking a very bland US/UK style cold lager, you can do it but end up feeling you've missed out on something with actual flavour and depth. On the plus side it smokes easily, straight from the tin and down to the bottom of the bowl without relights, although I have to say I found quite a few twigs in my tin that I wouldn't expect in a Dunhill blend.

Just before Dunhill decided they didn’t want to be in the tobacco business any longer there was a push to resurrect some long discontinued blends. An online seller was hyping this as a beloved blend from the 1930s that collectors were clamoring to have reintroduced. I bought a tin to try even though I was already wondering why, if it was so beloved, was it not in general production all these decades. Anyway, now I have my answer.

I have to agree with those who found this so mild and without character that you are scratching your head wondering what all the fuss was about. If you’re looking at a collectible site selling this for top dollar, move along folks, nothing to see here, do not pass the yellow line with your credit card!

I was so eager I tried my tin almost immediately upon arrival, then sampled over the next year to see if some magic might happen in the jar. Nope. This is even milder than EMP, and less complex. I’m not sure what process they used to make these tobaccos so characterless, but there’s zero savory contribution from the Latakia, and the Virginias are practically tasteless. Given that I’ve generally had good luck following Gentleman Zombies’ reviews (he gives this a resounding four stars) I have to wonder if BAT had issues with their mixing tumbler. Others have said the aroma of Latakia hits you in the face, in mine it was barely discernible. Anyway, I gave away the rest of what I had in the jar and moved on to greener pastures.

Not exciting. A good English mixture without oriental leaves, well balanced, with a mild to medium strength. But it is always the same old stuff. Latakia mixtures are so much and this one does not differ from the average. In my opinion Baby’s Bottom is a classic but common English blend. It does not stand out. Certainly ideal for Latakia lovers but my demanding taste asks for more. Specially with Dunhill. So, in my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 7 and two stars.
