Sutliff Tobacco Company Match Revelation
(2.80)
This is a match to House of Windsor "Revelation." The original was one of Albert Einstein's favorites, and this blend captures the essential character of the old classic, combining yellow and red Virginias, cube cut Burley, smoky latakia and zesty Perique with a soft, dark fruit top note.
Notes: Full range of colors, from tan, brown, dark brown, and black.

I am new to pipe tobacco smoking so take everything a say with a grain of salt. I find the cut of this tobacco to be interesting. My two ounces came in flakes much like rolled oats only thinner (not to be confused with flake tobacco). I enjoyed the blend but find it hard to put into words. It smoked nice and tasted...smokey. I didn't notice the casement, which isn't to say there is none, it's just not noticeable to my palette.
This seems to be a blend with a lot of character and no focus. To an aromatic smoker, it seems this would be considered an English. To an English smoker I am sure the opposite is true. Those who prefer va-pers might define this as a bad abomination to va-pers.
If you want something that is pleasant and undefined give this a try. However, like all items not easily categorized, you have to take it on it's own terms to enjoy it. I can respect a smoke like that.

I have to review this one in comparison to the C&D Epiphany which also attempts to match Einstein's favourite blend. I enjoyed both, but the C&D version offers more complexity. I tried these both side by side for 2 weeks, and it was apparent every time that the C&D version had the edge. As Einstein loved this blend for the contemplation it gave him via the intricate blend of so many tobacco varietals, the nuances matter. I cannot compare to the original since I am too young to have been able to acquire it, but between the two C&D is superior; thus I give this a 2/4.

I remember the old House of Windsor Revelation. It came in a red tub with a yellow gold decal. The Windsor wasn’t all that great to me. The match seems to have all the same components, just done better. The match has large pieces of bright Virginia leaf, chunks of white burley, and large pieces of dark burley. There are chopped pieces of smoky Latakia and perique also. The plum sauce is light and will slightly fade if you’ll air the tobacco out some, which needs to be done to reduce the moisture. Easy to light, and stays lit quite well. The flavors are beautiful!!! You can taste it all separately, and all together at the same time. The perique is hushed but as important to the blend as the bright Virginia. This is not an English blend just because of the Latakia. This is known to most as an American blend. I’d give this seven stars! Absolutely positively excellent.

“Just Say No”. Bad, though not as terrible as Mixture #79. I simply cannot tolerate Sutliff’s signature dank grassiness. I wouldn’t normally pan any blend, but I was so disappointed with the demise of HoW’s original Revelation that I was disgusted with this attempt to replicate Einstein’s favored smoke.

I have never had the original revelation smoking mixture. When I opened this I smelled Latakia tobacco mainly. When I smoked this I tasted fruit and the smokiness of the Latakia and maybe just slightly the perique tobacco. I was intrigued that Einstein liked this blend.
