Sutliff Tobacco Company Match Revelation

(2.80)
This is a match to House of Windsor "Revelation." The original was one of Albert Einstein's favorites, and this blend captures the essential character of the old classic, combining yellow and red Virginias, cube cut Burley, smoky latakia and zesty Perique with a soft, dark fruit top note.
Notes: Full range of colors, from tan, brown, dark brown, and black.

The close of business for House Of Windsor, left a profound void in the pipe smoking world. When I was younger, Revelation was not a favorite (started pipe smoking in 1965), however, as we age and mature, our tastebuds and general likes and dislikes do, also. Revelation, had become a favorite. It was the prefered pipe smoking mixture of Dr. Albert Einstein, Ph.D, so the older I get, the more like a "rocket scientist", I feel. The Revelation-Match on its own, is outstanding. My liking, is to let this tobacco breathe. If it dries too much, I simply use brewed coffee (I blend 1/3 espresso into brown coffee), and no milk or sugar, simply toss a tablespoon of brewed coffee into the tobacco and then cover it and place it in hot/direct sunlight for one, or as much as three, full days. The taste of coffee compliments tobacco, and the moisture is thoroughly distributed. What a symphony of flavors! Music by Antonio Vivaldi, and Revelation-Match in a pipe. I tend to sip the pipe for nicest result and it brings out flavors. For that matter, longer stemmed pipes and smaller bowl offerings are the way to go, or only fill the bowl half way. This allows the briar to absorb more nicotines (which bring out the grain in the pipe) and a given bowl size may disipate 50% more heat if smoked half full. Less liklihood of foulness as the smoke generally is over by time anything negligent can be commented on. Burley, Virginia, Turkish, Latakia, Perique, and possible casing of citron (candied citrus rind) or my imagination? What a calming and beautiful smoke, first time, every time, even when re-lit multiple times. My own tastes do not go well with butane, so I use any one of my trusty Zippos. Have never had any negative comments regarding the room note. The flavor is most pleasant and you don't have enough stars for me to rate this as in my opinion, it's off the scale at Five Stars. Now, I mix this 1 pound of Revelation-Match with either 4 ounces of Latakia, or 100 grams of Mc Clelland's Blending Latakia, as it produces the most favorite pipe smoking pleasure, to date. Go easy. Don't try to light the entire top of the bowl like some kind of welding torch. Slow it down! Puff easy. Relax. Revelation-Match will give all sorts of pleasant tastes. In days of old, pencil shavings were added to get the "woodsy" campfire tones to any person's pipe. Campfire tones from quality blending and finishing techniques of the tobacco company are very apparent. Mild sweet saltiness, stout burley, nasal filling straight forwardness. You name it, just like a musical composition of a great master. When blended as stated, in my opinion, it's even better. If your tastebuds run sweet, this may not be the one for you. If you enjoy the honest flavors of home cooking, oh, I think you are going to like this one. Try a small quantity first. I simply go for the pound size.

This blend has been well reviewed so I will not delve into the particulars. First of all, I believe this blend has been underrated at 2.7. It is masterfully blended. I bought an ounce to sample a few months ago but never really gave it a shot until a week or so ago and that is when it really hit me so I ordered a pound. I’ve been a piper for over 50 years and have been around the horn with many blends and have in the past few years have learned to appreciate the qualities and subtlety of these old American blends and Revelation has impressed me greatly. I never smoked the PM or HOW blends but rate this on its own merit. In short, I love the stuff! I have a tin of Pegasus and it does not compare. It lacks the basic qualities of the great “codger” blends of the past. In fact, I’ve yet to smoke a single C&D blend I enjoyed. I have some reservations about casually giving out a four star review and there is temptation to give it a three and qualify it in this review as 3.5 but I just have to give it the full four.

This tobacco took me at quite surprise. I tried this blend because it's a copy of the copy of what the great Einstein filled his pipe with, I stayed for the taste. I had expected a cheap and heavily case monstrosity that burned before one even put match to leaf. But I was greeted with the wonderful taste of the tobacco and the smell of a library with a camp fire somewhere within the shelves. Odd, I'll admit, but no where near unwelcome. This is quite a fair priced and easily obtainable leaf. It's not going to surprise you, nor is it a latakia or perique bomb, but it is consistant and easy to smoke tobacco.

Never had the original Revelation. This review is on the Match Revelation only. Since Albert Einstein liked this blend I thought it would be fun to give it a try. With ingredients listed as Burley, Kentucky, Latakia, Perique, Virginia it sounded somewhat complex and intriguing.

Upon opening the humidor I was greeted by a pleasant mild smoky campfire smell with a light fruity and citrus smell that was complimented nicely with a medium earthy, light woody, hunt of plum and a very light hint of vanilla. Sort of complex with no aroma dominating the others but with the smoky campfire slightly in the foreground. This seemed perfect to smoke right out of the humidor but I walked away so this sat out for an hour. The chunky coarse cut was easy to fill the bowl and lit easily. It burned at a medium consistent rate with a slight above average re-lights. The room note was rich and pleasant while the smoke was medium. A mild slight sweet aftertaste lasted about 10 minutes after the smoke. No moisture in the bowl and this burned to a dark ash. The flavor was very consistent from beginning to end. This could be a all day smoke and it does not bite but can give off some peppery flavor if pushed. Otherwise it is mellow and rich in flavor.

Upon lighting the wonderful smoky campfire flavor came forth with a slightly lighter fruity and citrusy flavor next. In the background sharing the stage was a rich earthy, lightly woody, slightly nutty, a touch of rum with a light spice and very light and mild vanilla. The flavors balanced well, they played well and stayed very consistent through the whole smoke. IT led to a pleasantly mellow, rich combined flavor that was pleasant and enjoyable. This is complex enough to have one's attention wrapped up in the smoke enjoying how well the flavors blend together yet simple enough to let one smoke while doing chores.

This was a wonderfully somewhat complex smoke that did not feature changing leads in flavor but remained consistent. This is joining my favorite list although it doesn't not make the top several super favorites. Einstein knew not only physics but he knew pipe tobacco too. Very impressed although if pushed it can give off a peppery flavor. This is a tobacco that belongs in today's world of blends for it is complex but has it roots in the past since the flavors do not dance, but stay pleasantly and perfectly balanced throughout the smoke. This gets a 3.6 out of 4 stars and everyone should give this a try for there should be something for everyone in this fine blend.

Pouch aroma of typical OTC burley. It's bright and fruity, with a slight alcohol note. If you inhale deeply, you can catch a slight hint of the musty Perique. I don't detect the Latakia in the pre-lit aroma.

This blend isn't what I expected whatsoever. I perceived this to be just another burley laden, flat, airy blend. When sipped, this is a flavorful, complex, very nuanced blend with notes of dark fruit, sweet cocoa, natural tobacco and some delicate spice. The Latakia is not noticeable to me in the pre-lit aroma, the room note or the palate. Burns clean and cool down to a light gray ash. I never did get to smoke the original, but the match is definitely one of my top tobaccos!

I really liked this. Caught me by surprise because reading the ingredients I passed on this for several years. Get an ounce just for something different on hot days this summer and boy was I surprised. There is a lot going on. All the tobaccos are well balanced and work in harmony. Mild nicotine but lots of flavor. Truely a all day smoke. Other review will tell about taste and strength. Will be getting more for a daily summertime rotation.

This is a great crossover blend. Cut is chunky ribbon. It's cool, tasty, with a slight fruity aroma. The Latakia and perique are sparse in this blend but you know they are there. The top flavor seems to be plum. A satisfying blend with a nice aroma that isn't a goopy aromatic. An old school classic, grab some and enjoy.

First Take: I bought this blend after growing quite fond of C&D's Epiphany. Both blends claim to be Einstein's favorite blend, which is certainly a fun thing to say. I'd claim it, too, if I could.

This blend doesn't taste anything like Epiphany. Both claim to have a citrus topping. Epiphany puts their topping front-row and center of their blend. If Revelation Match has the same topping, it's well hidden in the background. They don't taste similar at all.

Revelation has an umami characteristic that shines through immediately on the first puff and stays throughout the bowl. The umami is so present that it almost reminded me of a hamburger.

This blend has a lot of flavor. There's a spiciness that lingers in your nose like wasabi that becomes more pronounced as you add heat. It's earthy to the point of being almost mushroomy, and there's a slight vinegar component that makes the umami even more interesting.

I enjoyed this bowl from first light to the very bottom of the bowl. The nicotine is on the stronger side, and I was feeling it by the end of the bowl. I would have lit up another bowl, but I didn't want to turn green. I can't wait to get back to this blend. 4 stars.

I remember the old House of Windsor Revelation. It came in a red tub with a yellow gold decal. The Windsor wasn’t all that great to me. The match seems to have all the same components, just done better. The match has large pieces of bright Virginia leaf, chunks of white burley, and large pieces of dark burley. There are chopped pieces of smoky Latakia and perique also. The plum sauce is light and will slightly fade if you’ll air the tobacco out some, which needs to be done to reduce the moisture. Easy to light, and stays lit quite well. The flavors are beautiful!!! You can taste it all separately, and all together at the same time. The perique is hushed but as important to the blend as the bright Virginia. This is not an English blend just because of the Latakia. This is known to most as an American blend. I’d give this seven stars! Absolutely positively excellent.
