Low Country Pipe & Cigar Waccamaw

(3.53)
The Waccamaw River meanders through the eastern Carolinas, part of the Pee Dee River basin, a region intertwined with the history of tobacco for three centuries. What finer homage to this heritage than a rich, hearty Virginia flake? Bright leaf serving as the base is typical of the tobaccos grown in this region, while beautiful red Virginias lend it sweetness and structure. Perique and a dash of exotic Izmir leaf complete this complex, satisfying flake.
Notes: Named for the Native American tribe and part of the Pee Dee River Basin, the Waccamaw River begins in North Carolina and flows southwest into South Carolina before entering Winyah Bay near Georgetown. It offers extensive wetlands for local wildlife and has become an iconic symbol for Horry County, where Smokingpipes and Low Country Pipe and Cigar are located.

What can I say? Another great introduction in the Low Country line for the Va/Per fan. Upon opening the tin one finds high quality tobak is used as it is not only well cut, it has a nice aroma too. I often smoke this in the morning but, have found it enjoyable anytime of the day. The Va`s are in command of this ship, though the Perique and Orientals are a great supporting crew. This also DGT`s well. Smoked slowly this provides a very smooth flight and one you will find yourself taking quite often. As with Cooper, I have stock my hangar with plenty. Good luck and fly safe!!

A strong blend of Virginias, Orientals, and Perique artfully combined. My first bowl on opening the tin was overpowering . However, after the tin had been opened a short while, I found the blend less overpowering with each bowlful.

I finished my first tin more and more impressed as I went along. I left my second tin open for a half an hour or so after opening, and started in again. As this tobacco is quite moist in the tin, I conclude it improves with a short period of "breathing" and simply letting a little of the moisture escape.

The Orientals are very noticeable over the Virginia base. the quality of the tobaccos used is very high. I conclude this blend, which all of the staff at smokingpipes.com had a hand in, is tinned by C&D. The closest tobacco I have had is GLP's Fillmore, and smokers of that blend and its ilk will enjoy Waccamaw as much as I do.

One final note - for those who regularly order from smokingpipes.com, I am told by the staff that the label depicts their building in Little River, South Carolina.

A fine effort.

Tin note of tangy raisins, sweet pungent and spices. Tobacco is a broken flake of reddish brown with a little dark brown and a little tan. Moisture content is ok, some pipe smokers will want to dry it a bit. Burns slow with a few extra relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of plummy, fermented sour vegetation, spicy, toast, herbal spice, raisin, leathery, woody, creamy sweet, floral, mild citrus, buttery, musty dry hay, earth, lemon grassy, a tart and tangy dark fruity background note, and a peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Oriental/Turkish and Perique supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

In its tin it gives off a much fainter aroma than other mixtures with the same ingredients. When you light the pipe, the flavor is also smooth and subtle and it behaves like a fine va / per, the kind that produce a pleasant and relaxed smoke. Burns well and without bites.

It is highly recommended to smoke it with a slow cadence so that the flavor is not lost. Although this recommendation is useful for all Tobaccos, as you already know, in some cases it is more necessary than in others. Waccamaw is one of those who calls for this rule to be adhered to more strictly. In my opinion, the “dash” of Izmir that is advertised in the description is well described: it is a “dash”… I would say that the ingredients are well balanced and fused to work as a team, although every now and then, some of them appear the head to say "I'm here." If you compare this review with others you will see that each palate is different. What we all seem to agree on is that good quality tobaccos are appreciated here.

It happens to me with some Tobaccos that I have real problems when it comes to scoring it with three or four stars. Here I am going to leave it in three and a half rounded in three. In any case, I am glad to have some more tin in the cellar to smoke again in the future.

If you are one of those who enjoy va / per in its milder versions with a "dash" of Izmir, it is possible that this will make you enjoy a lot.

So far, I consumed half of the tin ~1oz. The broken flakes are very easy to pack straightly, or if you are into smoking them as ribbon-cut, it's also effortless to break and pack the blend. Once you hold a pinch of it, you get a silky feeling. The first draws were confusing since I didn't get any taste but a trivial raw Virginia. However, once I go further, the perique gets sharper, taking the lead taste in my palate. I suppose it was the oriental that gave me some sour taste through the middle of the bowl, which lasts until the end. I'd suggest this blend to one who likes strong "taste" with middle nicotine content.

Took me smoking a whole tin before I finally “got it”. Being a Latakia smoker, I didn’t quite appreciate Virginia blends before.

But this blend is excellent ! The grassy Virginias predominate, supplemented by the dark, strong Perique. The Izmir is there, but my taste buds aren’t that refined yet. I tried it in several briars, but this truly sings in a large bowl.

Rich flavors, with a nice cigar-like aroma and mouth-feel. You will feel satisfied by the end of the smoke.

Nicotine level is high, so watch out. Highly recommended !

This is a fantastic blend for the perique enthusiast. This checks all the right boxes. You open the tin to the smell of stinky feet and immediately know that perique is not just a condiment in this blend. The cut is flake, so you won't have it drying out too quickly and losing that figgy spice. You light this up and discover the Izmir adds a unique rounding to this blend, albeit perhaps overtaking the perique at certain points in the bowl. Nevertheless, the perique still shines and this makes for a nice tobacco to add a little variety into your rotation.

3.5/4 rounded down to 3 because the Izmir leaf could be balanced better as a condiment to make perique the continuously central focus of the smoke.

This is one fine blend. A few years ago I home blended something analogous to this. I didn't have access to a good red VA then, I used a slightly sharper VA, but Waccamaw reminds of this home experiment I did.

The red VA is what really makes this blend sing. It's warm, slightly sweet and smooth. The perique is present but not overwhelming. The Orientals play hide and seek in the middle. This trio, red VA's, perique and Orientals, combine well. Beautifully done, indeed.

The tobacco was not too moist, nor too dry. It lit well and burned evenly down to a light ash. I will purchase more of this, that's for sure. Four stars, all the way.
