Low Country Pipe & Cigar Waccamaw
(3.53)
The Waccamaw River meanders through the eastern Carolinas, part of the Pee Dee River basin, a region intertwined with the history of tobacco for three centuries. What finer homage to this heritage than a rich, hearty Virginia flake? Bright leaf serving as the base is typical of the tobaccos grown in this region, while beautiful red Virginias lend it sweetness and structure. Perique and a dash of exotic Izmir leaf complete this complex, satisfying flake.
Notes: Named for the Native American tribe and part of the Pee Dee River Basin, the Waccamaw River begins in North Carolina and flows southwest into South Carolina before entering Winyah Bay near Georgetown. It offers extensive wetlands for local wildlife and has become an iconic symbol for Horry County, where Smokingpipes and Low Country Pipe and Cigar are located.

Low Country - Waccamaw.
The flakes are partially broken, they're only a little more intact than Cornell & Diehl's Star of the East flake or their Burley Flake No.1. The moisture of my freshly opened tin was perfect.
The Oriental rules where the flavour's concerned, it pretty much monopolizes things and leaves hardly any room for the others. I like a bit of zing but this has too much; what begins life as a tanginess, turns tart, then ends up being fully sour. On the positive side it burns well and doesn't bite me!
The nicotine's medium to strong and the room-note's quite nice; that's QUITE nice, nothing brilliant!
My initial bowl was worth three stars, but after a day to think about it, and a number of bowls I'll only give it two.
Somewhat recommended.

I have mixed feelings towards Waccamaw. I love it when I start smoking, but middle to end of the bowl I don't like it anymore.
The problem to me is simple: lack of balance. Virginias here are definitely outstanding, but the Perique content is rather overwhelming. You start enjoying a sweet wonderful Virginia leaf and end up with a sour and piquant Perique taste.
Don't get me wrong, I love high Perique content on VaPers (my favorite is Escudo) but to me, this is overdo. Sad, because a good balance would make this one of the best VaPers in the market (the tobaccos are excellent).

I love Red Virginia, and I certainly don't mind Perique or Orientals, but I'd prefer my Virginias to be front and center. In this case, the Perique is nearly overwhelming, and the balance of the blend is thrown way off. It also burns very hot, turning quite bitter.
I realize I'm in the minority, so I'll need to give this another chance in a different pipe. For now though, I'm a bit on the fence about this one.
